Spring Game notes

Jonathan Thomas? Man, I thought he looked absolutely ripped. Kind of Dyshawn Davis like, but a little thicker.

Can't sight being ripped on the screen (for me today at least.) But he did not seen big enough. You can be ripped and not big enough to play the position.[/QUOTE]

Really? Kirkland played the position at 205 lb in his Junior and Senior year. Thomas is a RS Freshman who will get bigger. Our system is not built on 240 lb linebackers, it has always been built on guys between 210 or so and 230 with speed and Thomas definitely has that.

I am still wondering where Isiah Johnson was, anyone have an update?

10 of 30 from our starting quarterback is atrocious. I don't care how good our defense is. That is a horrible sign.
I saw alot of pass interference. Referees were not calling anything. And the defensive backs were holding on alot of passes.

Also - 7-8 drops of catchable balls.

People are way over reacting.

Park starts talking about Dunk after a catch of his for a few yards and how we don't take a lot of transfers. Next play dunk gets first down... Gedney says (paraphrasing): you know, having watched his tape of highlights and the few weeks of spring practice I really haven't been impressed. But I guess he just got a first down so there's that.

It could be completely true... I was just surprised to hear it in the springgame from an SU employee.

JT is a soph. He played last year.

Yeah. Not like gendey either but he does know a little something about the position.

Did he play in a game? If he did, I don't recall.

EDIT: Wow, he played in 9 games last year...4 tackles and 1 FF. Didn't even realize.

Almost exclusively on Special Teams. I was shocked when I saw him on KO coverage last year.

Part of me was wondering if it was a psych job... Motivational ploy.

He can't catch it for them. He threw mostly very well.

Just regarding the wideouts wanted to point out the above.

Parris drop over the middle- ball was a little behind but got two hands on it
Erv drop on a screen- two hands on it
Avant drop on an out pattern- right through the wicket
Lil Mac drop in the endsone- hit him in the numbers
Enoicy drop in the endzone- two hands
Custis drop in the endzone- two hands
Lewis drop

Those were all on Hunt passes off the top of my head. Now, I'm not saying that Hunt is all world. But he is serviceable and is our best option for 2015. He needs to get better at delivery- when to rifle it and when to lay off. Similar problem as Ryan had. But the wideouts should catch everything that hits their hands. Good wideout corps should not the number of drops we had yesterday. Hopefully Hunt and crew take notice and use the IPF and time before the season to improve. I do think Ish is by far the best. Interestingly I thought Broyld looked like second best. AC was nowhere to be seen. TEs really need to step it up.

And I'm pretty sure the goal line offense will not look like yesterday either. When you have a 250lb QB on the field I would imagine he will be getting the ball over the line plenty. The o line though really needs some work. I hope it was Trudo being out that threw things off. But it was 1st string o-line v 2nd string d line with a walkon at d end. There should have been canyons to run through yesterday.

Hunt's strength is being a threat to run. When he runs, it usually opens up the throwing lanes. Like Nassib, he needs to work on taking it off a bit when he can. He did thrown into some tight windows. What I think would have benefit if it was an actual live full contact scrimmage is the Qb's can:

1. Throwing at a different angel
2. Db's usually drop off of pass coverage a bit to adjust to the possible run (if completely), this usually gives the receiver a few extra steps.
3. It forces players to respect the run and thus opens coverage.
4. Some players are just more accurate while on the move

The format yesterday took that away from Hunt. Out of all the Qb's, he looks the part. Kid has worked hard to add good weight and looked the part. This allows him to break a few tackles. The one major thing they are going to have to work on is connecting on the play action. There was not great separation by the receivers and I attribute that to the D playing the same formation all spring and Shafer keeping his cards close to his vest.

Major concerns are all the underthrown balls. All of those could/would typically be intercepted at a game. If you're going to miss a throw, overthrow it and make your receivers work for it and not give it away to the other team.

Also, he is not very good. He has times he does well, but as a rule, he is not a good QB.

I agree there were a couple underthrown balls from Hunt that I didnt like. he missed on a couple out/corner routes. He overthrew Steve on a go route but I also counted 5 flat out drops. Another key drop was from Avant on a 3 rd 8. Should have been a easy catch and conversion. The ones that hurt most are the redzone drops. ( A slant and a back shoulder fade) Those need to be caught. If Custis and Aldy want to live up to the hype they have to catch those redzone balls. Hunt put those on the money. I still dont think Hunt is overly accurate but he is serviceable. If you take away those 5 or 6 drops. He would have been 16 for 24. Just sayin

Is it a shot at the staff for recruiting him? Seems pretty early on to take a shot at the kid himself.

Maybe it's motivational, who knows. Just seems a little out of character for Gedney.

That's some tricky math. lol. You took the drops off the attempts but added them to the completions. It's either 16 for 30 or 10 for 24.

I think Hunt is our best option just because of his legs. But with all those drops, why didn't they drop Wilsons passes who was 7-10?

there's a whole lot of rationalization going on. 10 for 30 is awful, no matter how you try to shine that turd.

Hunt had a bad day passing because he wasn't allowed to run...(?)
