Starling > Mintz

He is not ridiculously athletic, good lord.

Here we go again.

First it’s Eddie is awesome and in shape. Then JC is good. Now this stuff.

John Wall was ridiculously athletic. JJ is not.
No one on this board has said Eddie’s in shape or that JC is good lol. It was insiders, if anyone, who said that about JC.

JJ’s ridiculously quick. I think thats more accurate.

Ohhhhh k. We’ll just move on.

Agree. Those reports were coming in before most of us had gotten a glimpse of either guy. We kept getting told that the staff was really high on Carlos. Eddie being fit I believe was also started after pics emerged - people were just guessing based on what they saw.

Same overly negative takes pouring into this thread because its positive about a current player.

JJ’s clearly emerging as an offensive star for this team trying to find an identity. I dont care who’s a better player, he’s a better leader.

Judah was the better player. JJ is very good in his own right, and the better teammate. He has received so much unnecessary criticism on this board, when he's clearly our best player. Kid plays hard and has become better, contrary to what some people say. "He's the same player. He can't do 'X' etc. The team has struggled, but JJ has been a bright spot.

And it’s not particularly close. Mintz relied on foul calls and never really got anywhere with his dribble. Starling puts his head down and gets to the hoop. Also appears to be more of a team player. JJ is getting better and better…
I’ve always thought highly of Starling and his ability to attack the rim off the bounce. He’s just so fast and crafty with the ball. He’s also a solid shooter. He just needed more seasoning. He’s not as good as Mintz at getting steals and drawing fouls on his drives, but is improving at the latter. He’s a better 3 point shooter and faster than Mintz. It would have been nice to have both guys this year, along with Maliq and Q, plus adding Donnie and Lampkin and some of the other portal guys or a really good shooter to replace Bell. Continuity matters. Oh what could have been.

JJ’s game is very similar to Russell Westbrook. You give them a head of steam and they blow by everyone going to the rim. JJ will end up being a better shooter, where Westbrook is a better defender.

I disagree. He could penetrate and every time he did, he hoped for a foul. I thought he had a decent handle and could shoot not as well as JJ. Kind of a ball hog for me. His numbers:
YearTeamPPG
2022–23Syracuse16.3
2023–24Syracuse18.8
Career17.5

He is now with the Delaware Blue Coats since Oct 2024.

Are we really comparing JJ to a future Hall of Famer?

Westbrook averaged a triple-double four different seasons. Starling doesn’t pass or rebound.

I appreciate what Starling means to this team as much as anyone. You and I agree on a lot of things. I’m not seeing this comparison, though.

As a Clipper fan who also watched a lot of Westbrook when he was at UCLA, they’re not similar at all.

This board gets silly sometimes. If we're just talking offense then JJ vs Juda is debatable. Defensively, it 2 different levels. Juda is 2x the defenive player that JJ is. And its not even close.

why not just be positive toward JJ then?

instead it’s “he’s better than Mintz”, “he plays like russell westbrook but with a better shot”.

i swear some of these posts….you guys don’t realize it but you sound like Rugters Al and the Rutgers dumpster posts.

how about “his return from injury has been good. Allowed us to bench Carlos and play our best lineups. he’s been a solid scorer. Looking forward to seeing him continue to improve off his injury.”

This is relative, though, right? I would not consider Mintz to be a good defender, just better than Starling.

I am getting really tired of folks bashing Mintz.
That's now hitting you?? My oh my. It's ultra tame compared to several months ago. Just ask grandpa. No one really cares much about the dude anymore. He's only brought up for comparison reasons.

It bothered me then also.

The board was pretty critical of Mintz last year. He’s still the better player. I won’t argue that JJ is more likable.

Judah might be a bit better of a player, but JJ is a better TEAM player.

Why? He's gone, and it's not like he's ever going to play in the NBA.

His grandfather was not a good poster, and probably reflected how Judah saw himself as more important than the team. Remember that early season post, 'Imagine if Judah was on a talented team!'? I sure do.

Are you also against criticizing DeShaun Williams or Louie McCrosky?
