Still no preseason T25 love

They’re not going to and people should stop expecting it before games are played.

Yeah. Coming off a 17-15 season, with a ton of new players, and a new coach. I think anyone who pays attention probably knows we have improved talent wise, but I think we’re a very hard team to gauge right now for people. Tough schedule too.

We’ll certainly have the chance to play our way into the top 25 very early on.

Well said. Talented roster, on paper, no doubt. But like you said, new HC replacing a Hall of Famer, two poor seasons in a row, sizable roster makeover, question mark at center and a tough non-conference slate...definitely opportunities for SU to play its way into the polls early on in the season. Being unranked to start the season is logical - let's just do a repeat of 2003 :)

Also that we’re a young team relying on mostly sophomores after losing our top 2 leading scorers.

Young team and lots of key guys who haven’t played together, but Mintz was our second leading scorer.

Definitely lost a lot of points though and are heavily relying on big improvements from what Williams, McCleod, Bell, and Westry did in that department for their teams last year. Need a solid sophomore jump from Starling too, though he was productive at ND - points wise.

Unless I'm missing some games what's so tough about our non-conference slate? Other than Maui I don't see much of a challenge with this roster...

With the portal and massive annual roster churn where most every talented team has multiple pieces having never played together, the pre season top 25 is maybe more worthless than its ever been. If we do very well in Maui and don't trip up before that trip that will change things quickly.

Especially considering most people putting out Top 25s are lazy. They don't examine the rosters of all D1 teams. They just look at the last top 25, sprinkle in some other tournament teams from last year, shuffle them about a little to look like they've done some research and throw it out there for clickbate.

UNC at preseason No. 1 last year is Exhibit A. They were mediocre all season and then won a few games in March. I couldn't believe they were actually that hyped last off-season.

top 25??

lunardi doesnt even have Cuse in his top 76! lol

I suppose this team might not be good ...maybe...but I will be shocked if they arent top 75

one of the top backcourts in the country cant even make it in the next four out??!?

Lunardi knows absolutely nothing about basketball. He is a numbers cruncher. There are no numbers for him to crunch yet. The idea of him doing anything until the season is 3/4 over is comical. Honestly, I don't even think he has a place in basketball anymore. There are too many others that do what he does and most understand the game better.

This season is going to be very interesting. Most who closely follow Cuse basketball are excited about what is to come. We have so much potential to be really good. However, those on the outside seem to be focusing on all of the unknowns - players, new coach, new style, etc. which is completely fair. So who is right - the skeptics or the diehards? As what is often the case, it's probably going to be somewhere in the middle.

I just hope the diehards understand and expect some early struggles and challenges. To expect everything to come together smoothly right out of the gate is a bit unrealistic. My hope and expectation is that at some point during the year that we we get a chance to say "told you so!" to all of the sports "experts". I see us squarely into the ncaa tournament with the players we have and coaching adjustments that will be made. It will be nice to get back to discussions about our seed versus bubble talk.

even with all of the flux, theres still more continuity and talent on this roster than the majority of NCAABB

two things for me will be determinative:

1. was JBs "system" and rigidity actually holding this team back recently (as many posters surmised, myself included) in other words, had JB stopped getting the most out of his rosters???

or was last year's performance close to the actual ceiling of that roster?

basically, was a significant cause of the poor performance in recent seasons due to poor coaching?

(my guess is yes)

I assume, since JB always got the most out of his rosters throughout his career - most outside people would put almost all of the blame on recent poor play to lack of talent and not lack of coaching...while I do think talent wasnt as good as it coudlve been - my opinion is that it was primarily coaching that caused the poor records of recent years.

in the end, I think the outside view of the current talent on the roster is probably way below what it could be with the right system and coaching i.e. the current players took a hit on their perceptions due to the poor system they have played in for the last 1-2 years.

2. how good are the new coaches?

can they actually coach? how will they manage games??

everyone loved hopkins but he has struggled big time as a head coach

IF the new coaches are good at managing games and strategy etc...then the ceiling will be high...if not, it wont.

overall, I can understand the "wait and see" approach in terms of prognositicating this team...but for me...just changing the coach should be an improvement and the transfers are big time talents so I expect a jump just from that, as well. simple replacement level coaching (and absence of a system that was weighing down performance) should mean this team has a much better record than the last few seasons, imo.

on the other hand, if it really was just talent and JB did a great job last season...then, well, it could still be a good year if the new faces are as advertised, anyway...

so I'm bullish.

Oregon and LSU should be a challenge. And, don't forget Colgate.
I wish we could "forget" Colgate but as they say... "fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me"!!

Preseason 25 in portal era is pointless. Honestly, the "official" polls shouldnt come out until end of non conference

But in particular, for anybody in Cuse Nation to be even mildly butthurt that the Orange aren't considered Top 25, coming off of:
consecutive meh seasons, having lost our HOF coach, 2 'top' players/starters to the portal, and with a brand-new HC taking over the reins, with FIVE new faces coming in...

I agree 144% - it's all pointless until at least the OOC season has played out.
