SU Athletic Director Candidates

What are these people within the university thinking? Are they unaware of what happened at Pitt, or just don't care?
They are not just throwing darts in the dark. They knew what they were getting, good and not so good.

There was talk in the coaching search thread about Lyke not being capable of getting Syracuse a spot in the next round of conference realignment.

What kind of affect would dropping to essentially mid major status have on the academic side and even the city itself?

city, bad, academics, probably bad, but US News are hacks, so I doubt that's going up anytime soon anyways.

Is there any chance that Russ Brandon could be a candidate? Some clown from NunesMagician was apparently suggesting that he’s a contender. I assume that’s nonsense. In a 2015 PS article about Rusty, he joked that SU AD was his dream job.

Rusty is from my neighborhood... Played him in little league... he was a pretty good pitcher and had a mean fastball.

Met him at dinner told him the chiefs run the afc. Nice guy pretty sure his son plays football in college.

Russ dropped off a University board a few years back. Only spent time with SU when jobless. Not sure he would have a lot of internal vocal support in the 13244.

It feels like he’d be kind of the executive visionary that we need right now.

The theory that Lyke will continue what JW started is untrue. She will be her own person with her own (bad) ideas. You can also expect a mass exodus from AD employees including those currently involved with NIL. She is extremely disliked within the AD.

It would be disastrous on every level.

Seems like she was parachuted in by the Chancellor and not AD. Seems crazy see would be hired considering all the negative issues she had at Pitt. Surely cooler heads will prevail and they'll hire someone else.
Like the Chancellor and his wife she is a Michigan grad explaining the connection though she is quite a bit younger. Not sure who on the search committee would be a proponent though it sounds like she has a relationship with Laura Lally.

Article in Post Standard talks about all the numerous challenges facing a college like SU, including both next chancellor and AD. Sports has a section.

Worth a read, especially parts about demographics. Shows how crucial it is to get this hire right.

It's worth the read, especially from the perspective of how many different factors are going to impact the decision making process for athletics.

There are some folks in the administration who really like HL, though, perhaps for the wrong reasons.

Could you share some of their reasoning on why they like Lyke, if known?

We're all trying to understand why Kent brought her on board to begin with... It all seems quite baffling given the trainwreck she presided over at pitt and the fact that Kent made her a direct report outside the Athletics department.

Also, Kent is a lame duck chancellor that is leaving. If he wanted to push Wildhack to leave as well, that would prolly do it, but was that the only reason??

This is not meant as an endorsement of Lyke in any way, but people have tunnel vision if the think her entire career is marked only by raging incompetence. She was the ACC representative on the NCAA Division I Council for five years. She also served as the Chair of the ACC Director of Athletics Group and the NCAA Division I Football Oversight Committee. She is politically connected.

Following the breadcrumbs from the little I do know, I suspect she was brought in by the Chancellor for oversight and evaluation of the current AD model. She has strong opinions on how things should run. There is absolutely no way SU was not aware of the issues at Pitt that lead to her dismissal. People can put that to rest.

And anytime someone is brought in as a “special advisor to”, you can expect some unhappy folks. JW didn’t need a fired AD to be hired by the Chancellor to be his special advisor and breathe down his neck. Just for her own career revival

Definitely a quick bait title very common. However, if you think about where we were when KS took over and where we are now 10 times more stable. Which is shocking in a massively unstable collegiate time academically and certainly athletically. There was an article put out a couple of months ago by the university, talking about the economic impact regionally as well as nationally and even globally that this university has. That certainly was very strategic without misinformation IMO. We certainly have to position ourselves and I trust we are doing that. They better up the game academically with viable alternative revenue streams which if anyone hasn’t noticed, they are certainly attempting to do that.

There's people with some red flags on the employment histories that can be mitigated.

What she did at Pitt, however... These just aren't some red flags that can be mitigated simply. She was fired for cause in wasting hundreds of millions on non-rev facilities while not securing adequate funding and NIL for rev sports... while also publicly stating she was anti-nil, and is also now facing title IX violations and charges...

I mean it's a linear case study on how to grossly mismanage a D1 P4 athletics department and an unmitigated dumpster fire on her CV.

Some D1 committee experience is nice, but it's significantly overshadowed by her actual AD performance at Pitt, it was so bad...

I have yet to hear any viable reasoning on why we should have hired her as special advisor to begin with, let alone allow her to now be a serious candidate for next AD.

So she's politically connected in D1 sport circles. I get that... Does she know where Kent has bodies buried or something that could screw up his Michigan hire??

There has to be something significant undisclosed that has put her in a pole position here, because it doesn't make any sense on face value.

She was fired for cause, is being sued for gross financial malfeasance in wasting hundreds of millions on non-rev facilities while not securing adequate funding and NIL for rev sports... while also publicly stating she was anti-nil, and is also now rumored to being brought up on title IX violations shortly...
Do you have references for the above? I'm not sure the "fired for cause" and, most especially, the "being sued for gross financial malfeasance" is factual.

And FWIW, she is not "rumored to be named" in the Title IX suit, she was already named as a defendant in the court filing from early March.

Yup. She is specifically named as meeting with one of the players for an hour and a half, and then allegedly never launching an investigation. Suspect that will be a lingering issue for a while given it’s a federal case and if it’s not dismissed will lead to discovery etc.
