I think it is a bit overrated. It is great if you have a couple players you are interested in and need a tie breaker. It is good if you need to find quality depth. But there is no secret sauce.

BBall is pretty simple. You need quality G play. Even better if that is experienced. UConn had two 5th year guards who had already shown quality before they got to UConn. You don’t need data to figure that out.
What eye test do you think they used to find Joey Calcaterra who scored 8 pts a game for a 15-16 San Diego team?

It's ok to give UConn credit sometimes.
 
It appears Alabama was the major pioneer in this area. Though I know Buzz was using analytics heavily all the way back to when he was at Marquette. Hopefully we can catch up quickly. Oats having a math teacher background definitely played a role in that. The teams he's coached have played similar to modern NBA teams
