SU Human Resource Complaint Towards Heather Lyke

I’m not over exaggerating when I say this. But if they hire Lykes. It will be the most incompetent and worst hire this university has had on the athletics side. And there’s been some bad hires. You can’t hire a person into a position of power that was JUST fired for cause at a peer, rival school for the same position. And basically bankrupted their athletic department and has it in its worst financial spot arguably ever. Out of allll the candidates that want the job. You are gonna try and tell me the best and most qualified hire is a lady that ’ed up royally with her 6 years on the job at the same position at a PEER RIVAL school. That would be so incompetent

Are you posting this today because you are hearing from your contacts that she is still in play? Because AZ sounds pretty confident that she is out and a couple others think similar that Lyke wouldn't get it at this stage. By the way I am not knocking you if you are hearing different, everyone has different connections but I am trying to understand if you are hearing she is in play OR just howling at the moon like many of us have these recent weeks that she is just a horrible option.

I do think she is out of play as well. (Can genuinely thank Wildhack for that). The point moreso of my post was the fact she was even being strongly considered. She probably wasn’t coming here to be a “special advisor” if she didn’t think she had a shot at the AD spot. And she was 100% strongly considered. All I’m saying is thank the lord Kent is on his way out

At this point, I gotta suspect it’s just an optics interview to please the Lallys, Kent, and some other supporters, and to make sure that the candidates are a diverse collection of individuals. At least I hope that’s it!

Gotcha...appreciate it. I know you have some contacts so was just wondering if that was why you were saying what you did or if it was a general comment. Thanks!

Don’t forget the women’s BB coach she hired who cratered the program with some abuse lawsuits by the girls on the side. She is a raging dumpster fire of horrible management. But hey I’m sure she was a helluva softball player.

It is truly funny watching people trying to relate what happens in the corporate world to what happens in the education administration field. It is like night and day, two different worlds. My wife goes crazy trying to figure out the world I live in because it is totally different than the real world. It is almost impossible to immediately fire anyone.

Example: I work in finance and early in my career, one of my co-workers was caught stealing money from a school's student body account. Upwards of 7k over 3 years. In the corporate world, that person is fired. In the educational administration world, they get a strongly worded letter signed by them, their boss, and the superintendent. That goes in their file. They also had to come up with a reasonable payment plan. They came to work the next day like nothing happened.

HR complaint is an HR complaint they are taken "seriously" depending on what is going on and what the reaction is of the media or school district employees will determine what actually happens not the actual complaint unless it is a few taboo things.
Little League treasurers who do that go to jail, all the time.

Well said. I have relatives that are lifers for the state, crazy stories there too.

People here are like this competence is unreal how can this happen! Happens all the time.

I have a friend that worked for a Not profit. The CIO was having him print all the emails she sent because she wanted a record. She didn’t know about the sent folder in her outlook. This was recent too.

Save it for Festivus.
The H/R complaint is like dust in the wind compared to her job performance at Pitt. SU is hanging by a thread from a basketball stand point. Probably the most important hire since Roy Danforth which led to JAB and 40+ years of imparables success. Now SU is teetering on the edge of relevance. No cronies, this has to be the right hire. None of this is news to anyone here, just hoping intelligent decisions are made.

I agree, but not sure why this is in response to my Festivus joke.

Sometimes you reach for the brass ring. Right now is it. SU you needs to make the right choice. This is critical. It’s defcon 5. SU’s position is critical. 2030 is not far away. The university needs to make a big splash in all the revenue sports, not just next year but clearly need to show sustained excellence in the next 3/4 years. Super conference are coming and clearly SU will be in the MAC at best if significant strides aren’t made. I’m 80 years old so I probably 50/50 chance won’t get to see it through, but that’s not important. However, it’s important to my family. I’ve been going to SU FB sin1954 with my dad and grandfather. Season tickets since 1940’s. I had hoops tix since I was 18. I’ve seen the hood the bad and the ugly. This is about as ugly as it gets hoops. It is my feeling Fran is the right guy. No crystal ball here, it’s up to the university to put up or shut up. Simple d the right thing!!! Out.
Defcon 5? This that like the Germans Bombing Pearl Harbor. LOL DEFCON 1, is more like it. LOL

My experience with HR complaints is that, although they might not always be worthy of a fireable action, there is still something there to cause the action to be brought forward.

That's probably what happened here, although it's probably more of someone with a really strong personality "managing" as she always has, thinking she is still the number one person in charge.

Well, unfortunately she wasn't in charge and she probably stepped over the line by going against some JW directives, which he took offense to, and thus either hand delivered the complaint to the DO, or facilitated the leak.

It's a good thing Wildhack has a backbone. Now we will see if J. Michael Haynie has one as well. JMH, you are on the clock.
I definitely see your points. But, sometimes there’s a vendetta or someone has trouble with feedback. Or a complete miscommunication. That does not seem like the case here.

I think Lyle might still become AD - while that wouldn’t happen in the corporate world it’s still a possibility here.
Some people may not like this, but the problem with thinking like an academic in the current college sports environment is that athletics is now clearly a big business and an athletics department has to be to run like a business. For a private university like Syracuse, it is even more imperative that the athletic department be run like a business as resources are not unlimited.

Or the many Volunteer Fire Departments that are always robbed blind. Invariably the person caught was the only one who had access to the books.
As a retired accountant, these organizations and even small businesses who defy all accounting measures meant to prevent fraud to “save money” or time and put all their trust into one person, drives me crazy. Often it’s a close friend or relative and I’ve seen way too many businesses and families torn apart, lives destroyed by greed.

At least as far as what makes the news, there seems to be an inordinate number of treasurers of small civic organizations.

We have at least interviewed candidates for the AD position that are experienced PRO sports execs in Carapelli and Brandon.
