HR complaint alleges Heather Lyke contributed to ‘culture of intimidation’ at SU
Heather Lyke, special advisor to John Wildhack and a candidate to be SU’s next director of athletics, had a human resources complaint filed against her on Dec. 1, 2025, according to documents obtained by The Daily Orange.dailyorange.com
“A December human resources complaint alleged Heather Lyke, a high-ranking advisor and candidate for Syracuse University’s next director of athletics, directed “employees to disregard instructions given by our department’s top leader” and overstepped “the appropriate boundaries of her role.”
Let the games begin…
Yeah I don’t get the defense of JW here
if I’m hired to run a dept and chancellor thinks so highly of me they bring in another AD who turns out to have a lot of red flags would have been something to Accelerate my retirement
Being loyal because you went to Syracuse means ultimately he was kinda taken advantage of here. If resignation was too drastic I would have used my Thamel hammer to let it be known this is bs
It’s too 11th hour for me now. Along w the we won’t fire Autry because it’s tacky. PC fired English in season. It can be done. They let him finish it off
How would people rate Wildhack's and Syverud's tenure?I remain convinced anyone still critical of JW overall isn’t worth paying any attention to. It demonstrates a lack of any vision of the big picture.
Two very different statements. This is my take as well.
Very true. Lot you can read in between the lines there. Hopefully she’s gone soon and we can move on. And Candace can go with her.Two very different statements.
Academic ranking has plummeted under Syverud, and he said upon taking office it was too low and a priority. How would people rate Wildhack's and Syverud's tenure?
Wildhack finished strong. Is well respected outside the Cuse community. Screwed up the Autry hiring (because he basically rolled over on the decision making). Fran seems to be a win, as does FLJ, but Dino and Q didn't end well. Lacrosse hirings seem fine but results underwhelming. JMA Dome upgrades were long time coming. I'd give him a C+ but if the next two hires go well (even though technically they are not his), and Football has a solid 8 or 9 game win season, I'd more him up to an A-.
Syverud. A lot of you are a lot closer to the academic ranking situation than I am, but it appears it dropped. I know the party rankings have dropped and there is a lot of development around campus. Although a lot seems to be private student housing. What's his biggest claim that he can be proud of? Not sure, but in an era where a lot of Chancellors and Presidents ended up in trouble or fired due to how they have handled on campus protest issues, he basically kept Syracuse out of the news. Plus, he parlayed himself into a seemingly better job. For that alone, I give him a B-.
Heather Lyke was brought to Syracuse University to drive meaningful transformation in our Athletics Department. That kind of work is difficult and is not always welcomed by everyone. Growth and change can be uncomfortable, but that is very different from a policy violation, and it should not be confused with misconduct.
We hope you're right! This part of the SU statement made me chuckle. I've worked with many an executive who was brought in to the company to "transform" things.
The good ones quickly build relationships, immerse themselves in the company culture, and gather advocates for their mission.
The bad ones plow ahead like a bull in the proverbial China shop, surround themselves with sycophants while pissing everyone else off, and inevitably fail.
Lyke clearly is the latter. Doesn't mean she committed HR infractions. But likely means she acted like an a s s, treated people poorly, and made a lot of enemies.
The companies I've been at typically defended the senior exec. It wasn't in their interest to shine a light on their bad hire (unless something egregious/illegal went down). But then that person wouldn't have their contract renewed and would slink away unceremoniously.
I suspect that's what's happening here.

This is how you Foist someone. This is my take as well.
Yea I also don’t think this changes the likelihood from before of her getting the AD job. I think they’re just covering their behindsThis is my take as well.
I'm holding to "trust but verify". I won't be comfortable until it's announced it's someone else.Yea I also don’t think this changes the likelihood from before of her getting the AD job. I think they’re just covering their behinds
Nothing brings the board together like the opportunity for an epically bad hire.I haven't seen such unanimity since Chris Ash was being looked at for football HC.
Here is a suggestion for these brilliant mindsMy understanding (haven't read a lot about it admittedly) is: "The top 72 programs, mostly composed of Power Five schools, would play in the Power 12 Conference, split into six, geography-based divisions. The remaining 64 programs, mostly made up of Group of Five schools, would compete in a Group of Eight Conference." Way more than just BiG10/SEC.

She was brought into to do something but they're not saying she actually did it. Faint praiseThis part of the SU statement made me chuckle. I've worked with many an executive who was brought in to the company to "transform" things.

This is what needs to address: Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961Here is a suggestion for these brilliant minds
