SUMB and the 2020 Season

Things are not looking good regarding the band and their chances of performing on the field this season.

Hope they are allowed to at least attend the games and play from the stands.

It is not college football without college bands.

It's an incredible group of men and women who make up SUMB, the cheerleading squad and the Orange. Tons of time spent making sure the gameday experience is wonderful for first timers and every timers.

I hope whatever the result is for Syracuse that one year won't determine the future of the programs.

On a personal note, i'll never forget the friendships i made traveling with the team in the mid 90s to the Gator Bowl, MSG or the tournament as the Orange.
We got to travel with the hoops team when we came back from Denver in 1996. To be able to experience that with the team getting off the plane is a memory i'll never forget.

That is a fact.

I dont think there is any chance of playing right now.. blowing more air around is not good unless they also have a method of being tested. And faster cheaper testing is the hope for alot of what we want for more normal living. Several tests are right around the corner to being approved

This bothers me a bit. How can these schools say it's OK for football players to practice and play games, yet the marching bands and other groups are left behind. It's just another reason that these football players should be paid or employees of the school in some fashion. The system is broken.

one simple reason is that you still need to test everyone if you want them to play and interact like that and 2nd they cant wear a mask playing most of those instraments and they wont just effect themselves but the whole crowd.. you would need 50ft of space to keep them social distant blowing a tuba.

now if they do figure out testing before sept and the cost becomes less prohibitive then there is a chance they get to play.

How about we stop blowing hot air and recruit a windless marching band? Violins, xylophones, keyboards, percussion, etc. :p

It would be better than nothing.

I wonder if you could put a mask over the sound hole (or whatever it is called) on the wind and brass instruments? Sousaphones might be hard but the others would seem pretty easy to do. I find it hard to believe someone playing a sousaphone has the raw air power to create an aerosol through all the twists and turns needed before the sound escapes through the bell.

Hopefully someone is testing this and decisions can be made based on real information.

At the least, it looks like there are things that can be done to lower the probability of spreading infection, for band members while they are seated or marching.

That would be an interesting study. The amount of noise coming out of an instrument may not reflect the velocity with which the air is coming out. I would guess that with all of the twists and turns of most brass instruments, the air would come out slower than it does when the average fan is yelling at a ref. Let's get the government to fund something.

Tomcats link shows that it does indeed vary by instrument.. What is really unknown is the amount of aerosol produced

You could have all the kids record their show and have them walk around with Ipads and masks on and then they could do the routines but not play in real time..
