Sure Glad That Ugly Scene At Cortland Has Never Happened at SU

As soon as the police showed up the whole, god I hate people these days but, " the police" attitude came on and the You can't stop us mentality.

I don't know what would have happened with a smaller police presence. I doubt it'd be much better if even better.

The police don't have any choice. It's their job, their obligation to the community. They have to "police" the situation. The whole idea that cops escalate the problem just by their presence is just , promoted by spoiled, self-absorbed idiots who think they can behave like in public. With a crowd that size, even if only beer was involved, it's easy to imagine a fight breaking out. If one did, and people were hurt or killed, the community (and those a-hole kids' parents) would be up in arms, and suing the police department.

You guys don't get it.

When this stuff happens today it's the signal of the downfall of western civilization.

When it happened 20 years ago we laugh and reminisce about good times.

:)

I agree that every generation of student has incidents like this in the name of "having fun." And every generation of older adult looks at this and condemns it for the mindless, stupidity that it is. I believe the "you can't do anything to me attitude" is getting worse. Hell, just listen to the words of that song. Less respect for authority. Less respect for other peoples' property. Less respect for each other. Same idea - kids want to party and have fun. But the definition of fun is shifting.

You're telling me...

Look at this new "knockout" game problem around Syracuse and NJ. If some random kid on the street tried to duff me out of nowhere I'd beat him to death, as he just just forfeited life.

Any kid who plays the "knockout" game which victimizes harmless pedestrians, including mothers with children...deserve harsh punishment.

In those attacks there is no chance for immediate retaliation or defense. It's just one more perk for the society we have raised.

Cowards.

Actually, All4SU, there were a multitude of injuries. I blame the police for this. A group this size in a small area should never have been allowed to form. Once it did, it was extremely difficult to control. This group you saw in the pictures and videos was only one of several large "parties".

In many instances the police don't help the situation. When you go in and treat a situation like a riot, you tend to get a riot back.

Unless you're in East Lansing or Morgantown. You just get riot no matter what.

We'll just have to agree to disagree then.

Why was it so much worse this year than other years?

Now I don't have to tell you good folks what's been happening in our beloved little town. Sheriff murdered, crops burned, stores looted, people stampeded, and cattle raped. The time has come to act, and act fast. I'm leaving.

When I went to Oswego we called that "Tuesday".

Unfortunately it's not like that anymore! Pretty much the biggest event is the Bridge Street Run. Hell, even our Whiteout Weekend should be a big event but it seems that nobody pays much attention to it.

And how exactly are the police to blame?

They were well aware the crowds were getting very large, yet there was no effort made to disperse them until it was too late. It may very well have been an upper level decision but there was every reason to limit the crowd sizes based on past history.
The police are there to preserve the peace and assure the public safety. The failed because they allowed this to get out of control. My take is different some. I believe it is their fault not because they were there, but because they were too late in getting there.

If a group of students in a classroom get out of control, and a teacher steps in to control the situation, is the teacher to blame? If a police officer pulls over a car, and the driver gets belligerent, is the cop to blame? It comes down to respect for authority.

Sad news. I am an IC alum and the Cortaca Jug is one of the best rivalries in sports.
Same here. Would hate to see it tossed because of some State School idiots.

Of the 80 arrested only 19 were students, so a shade over 75% of the arrests composed of non students. There's a quote in there from a SUNY Cortland senior that there we folks there who didn't know anyone at the school.

"I ran into groups of people that didn't even know any of the students here," said Paloma Bido, a SUNY Cortland senior, from New York City. "They just heard that it gets crazy and they were staying in motels nearby just to come and party for the weekend."

Where did you get your numbers? The arrest number I heard was close to 125. I think there is a lot of BS going on in this town. Got to protect the sacred cow...

Students or Cortland students?
