There always seems to be one school who no one expects to make noise but by the end of the season are a solid team in conference. Last season it was Va Tech and the fighting Buzz Williams that went from last place the year prior (2-16 in conference) to a tie for 7th (10-8 in conference). My personal pick is Clemson who I think will make the NCAA tournament after a six year drought. If you're interested you can read why here: 2016 Clemson Basketball Preview

Who do you think is gonna rise up from where they were last year and make a splash in the conference?

This is going to be weird on the Syracuse board, but I think Syracuse.

The very early projections seem to have you guys somewhere around the middle of the pack in the ACC, but I see a team that could challenge for the top...especially if you get White. Without him, still a solid top 15-20 team.

A very realistic choice, I just felt like I'd be a bit of homerism to pick the Orange lol.

BC
:rolling:

3 or 4 years ago, I actually thought BC was heading in the right direction for the tourney by 2015 or 2016. They were like 5-13 in the ACC but were very competitive and were playing only freshman or sophomores. Since they were playing at BC I assumed would be full term players. Instead they pretty much all left or the few that stayed stagnated,

I think the OP nailed the 2 I would select. Clemson and ACC

Clemson has been my breakout pick for the ACC the past couple of year. Sort of the Pitt of the south -- they get good athletes and play a tough grinding game. I think they will make the tournament sooner or later. Not very fun to watch however.

Can't count out Buzz taking V'Tech another step closer to the tourney, We can hate him, but the guy knows how to get the best out of his players.

I am going to have to go with Duke.

Early in the ACC season, Grayson Allen will become upset at the lack of shots he is getting. In the 3rd ACC game of the season, Allan will do a russian leg sweep against Giles, injuring him for the season. Coach K will proceed to punish Allen by making him sit out the next possession.

Later in the same game, Tatum will start to take more shots. Allen will proceed to give him a Superkick to the head, giving him a concussion. Despite Coach K's objections the referees eject Allen from the game.

Coach K is now really upset with Allen and sits him out for the first 5 minutes of the next game. Things continue to go bad and Duke starts the season at 3-6. Not surprisingly Coach K has some severe back issues at this point and leaves the team.

Us. If you recall, we were a bubble team last year. If we get Andrew White, we are going to blow away our projected finish in the conference, which right now is probably between 6th and 8th or 9th, based on who we lost.

I don't understand how some people have us 8th or 9th, right now I have us 4th or 5th, if we get White, I would put us 2nd or 3rd.

Anybody projecting us 8th or worse (with or without White) is not to be trusted

Pitt could surprise either way they go. No Dixon = huge question marks.
I'm just happy we won't have to deal with their clutch and grab D and moving screens(hopefully).

I'm far from sold on Stallings. SEC has been UK and 1-2 other rotating teams for the last few years, and he never broke Vanderbilt away from the pack. Pitt has some solid experience, but just can't see him fairing significantly better against 4 HOF'ers, Bennett, Larranaga, etc. If they finish in the top half of the league, it'll be a "win" for Pitt.

I'm not either, he is not a good coach, and who knows if the players will buy into him, and its not like they have a bunch of 4 and 5 star recruits, Dixon maximized their talent.

I'm guessing from your nic' that you're a Hoo (UVA) fan. Thanks for the comments, and I'd love to hear your thoughts on UVA hoops this year. I know Nichols (transfer) is going to help inside. Fuentes is always tough .. excellent shooter, distributor. And of course always well-coached with Bennett. All that said, it's hard for me to believe that UVA is going to be in the same category as it has been (top 3 ACC) without Gill, Tobey and Brogden. I know hope springs eternal, but give me a realistic projection for UVA in the ACC this year. Thx in advance.

Big question is "how to you replace Brogdon?". He's one of the 4-5 best players ever at UVa, and no one guy will do it...it'll have to be a by committee approach.

I'm a huge Gill fan, but Nichols will be better. He already had a mature offensive post game. He worked on his mid-range game during the RS season. He's a better defender (especially in TB's system) than Gill.

I've been a UVa fan for 35 years, and I'm not sure anyone frustrated me more than Mike Tobey. Great kid, but inconsistent. He'd look like an All-American one night, and disappear the next...when he was "on" we were close to unstoppable. I absolutely love our new big man, Diakite. I have a feeling TB will bring him along slowly, but I've seen this kid practice with my own eyes, and he's going to be special. A defensive beast, freak athlete, and a threat on the perimeter. He won't start right away, but I don't see how TB can keep him off the court. He won't be at UVa for 4 years...I'd consider us lucky if we get 3 out of him.

To me, the difference in a good (top 20-25 season, #4-5 in the ACC) versus a great season (Final Four potential, ACC contender) will be answered in 2 questions.

1. Which 3rd year player(s) will step up? Last year Devon Hall, Darius Thompson, Isaiah Wilkins, & Marial Shayok were solid role players and all averaged 4-5 per game. Since TB has been at UVa, players have typically broken out between their 2nd & 3rd years. We need at least 2 of these guys to continue that pattern...I'd like to see 2 double their scoring output, and become viable 3rd & 4th options after Nichols & Perrantes.

2. How good is the freshman class? I don't see any freshmen starting, but a couple will play significant roles. I've already mentioned Diakite. I also love Kyle Guy & DeAndre Hunter. Guy has the quickest release, is a dead-eye 3 point shooter, and is an incredible athlete for someone 6'2...he plays with a little bit of a cocky swagger. Hunter is a much more reserved personality than Guy, but we haven't had a wing quite like him since TB has been coach. He has a 7'2 wingspan, does a little bit of everything well, and will push the upperclassmen for minutes...most recruiting services had him somewhere in the 60-100 range, but he'll play above that. We also have Ty Jerome & Jay Huff...Huff may redshirt because he needs to add some weight/strength. Jerome is coming off of hip surgery...he could redshirt, but has recovered well. I don't think either of those guys will play roles as big as the other 3 freshmen though.

What about the walk-on that kept doing that stupid reaction everytime Perrantes made a three? Please tell me he is gone.

Lol, no he's still there. You're talking about Jeff Jones Jr. His Dad (Jeff Sr.) was our point guard during most of the Ralph Sampson years, and was also our head coach once upon a time (before Gillen, who was before Leitao, who was before Bennett). I'm pretty sure he'd bug the crap out of me if I was the fan of another ACC team, but we get a kick out of him :-)
