SWC is gone

I have some good news. Fran just wrote to me that she was with him at the end and held his hand for an hour until he died. She had read two letters and 5 cards to him that had come in. I wanted the people who sent them to know.
I had sent him a card last week which seemed so inadequate. It’s difficult to express in words all that he meant to us on this board. Sad that he’s gone but so happy that he wasn’t alone and was in a place where he could pass peacefully. He obviously has some very special friends like AccuRater, Fran, Beadle etc, thank you to them and all the support they gave Steve. RIP.

Axe wants to do a piece on Steve. If anyone knew him well and would like to say a few words about him, either each out to Axe on the socials or text him if you're an Insider. Or, ping me, and I'd be happy to help connect you.
He asked to have them sent to his email address at baxe@syracuse.com. I posted a thread about this yesterday, in case anyone was interested.

SWC died last night (3/17) at 9:30.

Steve passed as he had wished. He fell asleep and didn't wake up.

For the past few weeks, there has been some discomfort but no significant pain. He has been in and out of sleep for the last several days.
RIP Steve. I am going to miss you my old friend.

So glad some people from the board got involved and reached out to him before he left us. Props to everyone who did or tried to. I think one of the last things this person who knew so much learned is that he was important to many many people on the board (and people who.listen to the coaches radio shows).

His posts were always thoughtful, interesting and civil. I think this is why he was so loved by many on the board.

We would all be better people and posters if we emulated him a bit more.

I am going to try and pay tribute to him by trying to to do this from this point forward.

Thanks Accurater. My condolences on the loss of your good friend. It is a sad day.

I will, however, continue to be confrontational and defensive. But that's what makes SWC and you stand out from most of the rest of us.

You're a class guy and always were.

Steve, I went back into this year's threads to the Miami "why Syracuse Will Win". Of course, your three page post was spot on. I always got a lot of information about football what happened in the game and games because you usually brought them in to compare stats with Syracuse.

I cried when I saw this post from AccuRater. Couldn't help it. Why hold it back? You were an ace here man the boards and my brother. No one has even tried to post info like yours-The Upside, The Downside, Why Syracuse will win. I can't imagine being in that hospice alone for some of the time feeling what the cancer brought - pain, fatigue, hopelessness.

I hope HE is holding you in his arms right now and forever. :) God bless you.

This season will be strange not getting all pumped up on the "why syracuse will win" and then crashing when reading "why xxx team will win".
Always level headed and approached them with open eyes and not orange ones.
Thanks for everything over the years, god speed.

I never met or spoke with Steve, but he's been a big part of my life as a Cuse fan. I remember him always calling into radio shows as a kid. I'm 33 now, and always made sure to read what Steve posted here. He's a legend to not only this community, but the Syracuse athletics community.

Prayers to him and his family - Heaven got a little more orange today

That reminds me of one of my favorite rituals with newer posters. Steve would always post why the opponent would win first, and it often got some of the newer posters in a bit of an uproar when they didn't realize another post about why Syracuse was going to win was coming next.

Maybe someone has already mentioned this, but the coaches shows should be named after him.

I know a lot of people point to SWC's upside/downside, radio show recap posts as favourite memories. While I agree they were tremendous and showed what an amazing fan he was, I will forever treasure his posts after the hoops season was over, all but one ending in a loss... the posts simply pointed out that another season had passed, but spring was on the way. He also had a number of posts warning people to not wish time away, especially summer days, and take time to enjoy whatever moment of the year we were in. As a fellow Mets fan, I also enjoyed his posts about baseball and listening to games on the radio... which btw is how I grew up as a Mets fan, listening to games on the radio.

If I were to summarise what made these posts so special to me, it was the message to slow down and take a minute to smell the flowers and enjoy what's next versus wishing way the summer. I would read those posts and I could just feel the calm exuding from them. They gave me peace as I pictured someone I had never met in person in my life just relaxing and enjoying the day.

SWC, you made life better, if only for a few minutes at time, for this stranger you never met in real life just based on your words on a message board. I posted this before and I'll post it again, but when my time comes I can only hope to have the same amazing impact on strangers that you have had over the years. I hope you are in a happy place and you can talk to your brother about the upcoming football season versus writing a letter.

RIP SWC, I might have met you at the 2004 BET, but not certain. I never knew you personally but I know you bled Orange, and for that we will always be brothers. Be at peace
