SWC is gone

Sharing a message from Axe to the board:

Hi, everyone. First, I'm truly sorry to hear about Steve's passing. I know how much he meant to so many of you. I enjoyed chatting with him on the radio for so many years as well. He was truly one of kind. I'm writing a piece about Steve and would appreciate hearing from any of you that knew him personally beyond the board. baxe@syracuse.com is my email. Appreciate any consideration.

Awful news. Syracuse sports and certainly a board legend. Going to miss all of the informative posts, the why each team will win, and just him being on this board. Never met him in person but grateful I got to hear his opinions on the sports we shared a passion for. You will be missed, SWC.

This is very sad.

A bunch of us met him at an ancient tailgate in the lot on the corner of Waverly and S Crouse. Nice guy.

At the time, I was 26 and like anyone that age I thought he was old. Here I am now older than he was then. Wild how many of us have "known" each other for so long.

It's a shame he didn't have decades more time Easy to imagine him being a sharp-as-a-tack ninety year old board historian for people who haven't even heard stories about McNabb, Anthony, or Marcy.

Can’t say anything that has not already been said. Did not know Steve but felt like I did due to his enormous presence here. His Upside/Downsides were a part of my routine after games and were spot on. I’ve been an irregular contributor here for so many years and he was one of the constants, a magnet that kept me feeling a part of the community. Thank you Steve. Rest in peace.

So sad. I've been lurking (and occasionally posting) for many, many years now. Even without day to day interactions, there are certain posters that you feel you know personally. Reading his posts were part of my daily routine. His absence will be felt for a long time and his contributions to this community will be sorely missed. RIP Steve.

I know a lot of people point to SWC's upside/downside, radio show recap posts as favourite memories. While I agree they were tremendous and showed what an amazing fan he was, I will forever treasure his posts after the hoops season was over, all but one ending in a loss... the posts simply pointed out that another season had passed, but spring was on the way. He also had a number of posts warning people to not wish time away, especially summer days, and take time to enjoy whatever moment of the year we were in. As a fellow Mets fan, I also enjoyed his posts about baseball and listening to games on the radio... which btw is how I grew up as a Mets fan, listening to games on the radio.

If I were to summarise what made these posts so special to me, it was the message to slow down and take a minute to smell the flowers and enjoy what's next versus wishing way the summer. I would read those posts and I could just feel the calm exuding from them. They gave me peace as I pictured someone I had never met in person in my life just relaxing and enjoying the day.

SWC, you made life better, if only for a few minutes at time, for this stranger you never met in real life just based on your words on a message board. I posted this before and I'll post it again, but when my time comes I can only hope to have the same amazing impact on strangers that you have had over the years. I hope you are in a happy place and you can talk to your brother about the upcoming football season versus writing a letter.
You should send this to Brent Axe.

This x2. Very well said. Echo this all right down to listening to Mets game as a little kid in my bed at night on the radio.

I’m 45 years old.

I’ve been on whatever version this board has taken on for over half my life.

Whatever corner of my life this board takes up, SWC was there for that whole time.

May he rest in peace. May his memory be a blessing. May his loved ones and all those impacted by who he was remember all the ways he made life better.

I am so sorry. This is rough to read and very sad. May he rest in peace.

Even though I never met him, his contributions and showing us the vulnerability side of himself makes him and this board truly special.

Was he an SU football fan too? Hoping Fran and co. gave him a boost the past few months.

Never met Steve. Reading this news made me tear up. This board is such an extraordinary place and his efforts really helped make it that way. I feel like I lost a family member and I guess in a way that's true. God speed SWC.

I can’t count the number of times I would drive home from work late and have the coaches show on the radio, listening to Steve’s insightful questions. I never met him but always enjoyed his posts- his passion for SU shown through his encyclopedic knowledge and research.

I’m thankful he was at peace during his final days. So singular a man deserved this comfort.

Rest in peace, SWC.

What a loss. Board legend. I’m having a hard time putting my thoughts into words. RIP Steve. You will be missed

RIP to Steve, the bored and board historian, and recalling his long time avatar, The Most Interesting Man in the World.

As everyone has already mentioned, he really lived up to that avatar with all of his contributions, and in the way he delivered them. Thank you.

Condolences to his family and close friends.

RIP, Steve. Thank you for all your contributions to the board. I know I can speak for many, if not all, of us when I say we anxiously awaited your always interesting and informed posts.
Condolences to your family and friends.
