Symir Torrence 2.0

Josh Pace never took a J and it did not matter. ST should never take a contested 3 or long 2, at least not this year. His Marquette percentages were dismal.

Maybe he shoots better in practice now that he's here. Remember, he's practicing with four great three-point shooters. Something's gonna rub off.

I'm not that confident, based upon the summer workout videos. I just don't think we can count on ST to be a shooter. Maybe from mid-range, but certainly not from 3.

Symir played good against LeMoyne because they pressured him. That's what he wants and where he is going to thrive. We will play some teams this year who are going to pressure him no matter what, Duke is one, Villanova is another. I expect him to be very valuable in those games.

The true test of his season is going to come against teams who sag off him, clog the lane, and dare him to shoot. Virginia will do this for sure, I expect there will be plenty of others. Will he be able to contribute against those defenses? If a defender can leave him and doubleteam someone else, he becomes a liability who needs to stay on the bench.

He doesn't need to score against teams that don't pressure him, all we really need him to do is play excellent D, make good decisions with the ball, give us ball handling, and keep one defender occupied. I'm confident he can do everything except the last one. If he can do the last one, he will be a really nice piece to our team.

THIS.

IF he cannot make a guy defend him, then he's a little quicker and more buff version of Howard Washington.
(this is not a compliment)

Your PG can't be a total self-check, whereby his man can sag off of him at any time to zone or double another player, and not be able to make them pay for that.

The 2 exhiitions indicated that he has no J but he can score on a drive. The team needs him to have a crafty mid-range game. The trees make it harder to score down low. If he invites his teamates to be double teamed maybe we will see a bit of the science guy, PC. JB certainly gave him a look. We will need ST when we are pressed. He also does a good job running the offense. Get thee a mid-range game!!! My kingdom for ST to show a GMac floater.

Yeah, but we could spread the floor, see if his defender sags to help someone else, pass to someone else, he cuts, backdoor finish.

This. Plus if you are using Jesse or Cole as a screener that action alone makes it more difficult on the D. It's much more difficult when there are multiple options you have to defend to simply try and force the PG to be a shooter. He also can be a cutter and then pass off the cut- something we did vs Pace. Generally speaking because we usually have two shooters on the floor it makes it much harder for a defense to sag unless they go zone.

When Josh Pace played big minutes defenses always sagged off and he used the space to get as deep into the paint as he could. Symir does have that floater. He also has good vision so he gets into the lane and can make a play.

Lots of chess moves to watch play out this year.
