Syracuse’s Roster Build - Archetypes

Agree 100% and on the same page as you. I only brought up Florida cause the previous poster did. Very few teams will have a 12th man that can contribute. That said if Red does not make the tourney this year I put the blame squarely on him. We signed who we targeted early in the portal. Choosing to keep JJ was our decision. I don’t necessarily agree with it, but this is not the same situation as last year where we missed on all the early targets.

Agree with all of that. It's on Red now to get us in the tourney. No more excuses.

Agreed.

Also, I'd argue that our bar for next year is different than a Florida who obviously just won a chip.

Totally different expectations.

I think everyone that is pessimistic (and I'm not saying that people shouldn't be after our last 10 years or whatever), which also includes me a bit until I can see Red really coach, should give Red *some* grace based on the off-season, in terms of a goal of just making the NCAAT.

And just having a rounded-out roster, a good locker room, a bit of depth in case some guys get dinged and not worrying about key guys at the last minute should give Red the ammo to have a competent team that should make the NCAAT.

Again, anyone can view my posting history and knows I've been anything but rah rah about Red and the program. But I think it's unfair to not acknowledge that this off-season has been much better than previous ones and, while Red may still have to prove his coaching chops, the steps that have been taken to improve the program do seem to be ones that *should* get us to the NCAAT (again, if Red can prove his coaching worth).
Look you can't realistically Look at film on these players and not see that they are better athletes then last years team.
That at least gives Red more options on offense and defense.

With either Freeman or White in the game you can have the same dynamic of DC and Rony. Rony didn't defend all those centers alone. JR Reed and the Florida center when they got the ball had to worry about DC. Which changed their ability to score.
Rony and DC helped pad each other’s block stats. When one bodied up a guy, the other would swoop in and block the shot. They were two of the best 1-2 inside duos in college hoops. Both could jump out of the gym and both could score. I loved watching them play together. It was special.

And having the 2 of them discouraged a lot of people from going inside for shots.
They would pull up for jump shots or pass back out.

I loved when Dwayne Schintzius talked all that ish about Rony before we played Florida in ‘87. Rony took it personally, dropped 33 pts on the bum, and punched our ticket to the Elite Eight against UNC.

RIP Dwayne Schintzius. Had one of the best mullets ever in college basketball. If anyone can find it, there is a highlight from the UF at Pitt game that season where he blew a wide open dunk. Instead of running back on D, he stopped momentarily to make sure his hair was in place. I’m not kidding. I watched it live and laughed for about 10 minutes.

I just now am catching up on this thread... fwiw, I think that Kiyan will start, barring an injury. I think people are under-rating him because his dad was so great. He's likely our best shooter and 1-on-1 shot-creator. He's also our highest profile and most skilled offensive player. Nait, Him, DOnnie, JJ and a center seems like the starting 5 to me.

Yeah, Kiyan Anthony as our starting point guard makes perfect sense. I agree.
