First off - I want to say, I hope I don't come off as an a-hole here, but I've been a season ticket holder for the last 10-12 yrs, and have sat in 3 different sections now. It seems no matter where I go, there is always at least that 1 person or group of people that makes the game watching experience unbearable at times. A couple of examples from our 2 games...

Game 1 vs Cornell - a guy 2 rows in front of me (who thinks he is the 2nd coming of John Wooden) declares the reason we came back in the 2nd half is because we switched to a 3-2 zone. Yes, a 3-2 zone. Apparently he doesn't notice that sometimes our forwards extend out top to create traps or take away shooters. It's a 2-3 zone, not a 3-2 Wizard of Westwood.

Game 2 vs Fordham - a guy a few rows behind me is yelling incessantly at Rakeem Christmas for not getting a rebound. Hey guy...there's a reason Rak can't get that rebound...he's on the bench. That's Jerami Grant out there.

Another guy is asking when Jerami Grant will be back. We're now 15 minutes into the 1st half and Grant has been in the game for quite some time. I just sit there shaking my head.

Maybe I need to exercise more patience, or perhaps I shouldn't take things so seriously, or better yet, I should just ignore these people. But I can't, because this kind of thing drives me absolutely nuts.

I realize this is the case at any sporting event at any stadium, but I'm posting this in the hopes that I'm not the only person here who gets so irritated by some of the "fans" we see.

"If everyone you meeting is an A-hole, you're probably the real A-Hole"

Some A-Hole.

Calling someone a Wizard of Westwood is one of my go to insults in the workplace, actually.

No one ever gets it. Joke's on them, though.

4 years ago when I sat right behind Juli Boeheim and thought I had died and gone to heaven, there was a man close to us who screamed at the refs continuously. He was pure hate. One of the regulars told me this guy had been sitting there for many years and was "always" like this. It sometimes got in the way of my enjoyment of those fabulous seats that year.

I have compassion for your situation. Luckily, the people around me in 309 are really good, knowledgeable fans of the game. However, every now and then someone shows up whose comments are like salt in a wound. There is only one way out of our predicament. We must change our reactions. You know the old serenity prayer: God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." We have no control over all those people who irritate us. We CAN figure out how to immunize ourselves against them. I use "selective hearing" (it takes practice), and I focus like a laser on the action. I will my mind to not give them any attention. I don't take it personally. All of those things help me, but you will probably have to figure out your own strategy.

This is definitely worth doing, because I know you have the intention to go to the ball game and enjoy yourself. You have the intention to feel lucky and happy that you are there. As Jean Luc Piccard would say, "Make it so." Good luck!

When I was lucky enough to have cto's tickets for a game, there was a guy sitting behind me who yelled "SYRACUSE BASKETBALL IS MY RELIGION!" and was talking about how much he knows about SU hoops, etc.

In the waning moments of the game when all the walk-ons were in, he proved not to be too religious when he said loudly that he didn't know the names of any of these guys.

Yea man. I think you need to calm down. People say and do stupid shitt all the time outside of the dome, and not at all pertaining to syracuse bball. I get a kick out of stupid comments. Mellow out and laugh it off... And pray those people aren't in charges of the nuclear reactor at 9 mile.

I always enjoy myself at the games, simply because Cuse hoops/football is my passion. I can't envision something or someone that would ever keep me from going to games. I just needed to vent and share some of the random musings I heard at the last couple of games, by the "knowledgeable" people near me. It's nice to know I'm not the only one who gets bothered by it from time to time.

That was probably me... sorry.

It's not like I find myself in arguments or throwing down with these people. It just boggles my mind, and I simply shake my head at them. It's all harmless stuff. It just happens to get under my skin. Someone is yelling at a college kid when he is NOT in the game. If you're going to tear into a kid, at least choose one that is on the floor. :bat:

Must've been a Catholic.

There is always one hot topic every year that makes me realize that I need to stop talking Cuse hoops with hem before I punch then in the throat. Last year it was "MCW isn't going to the NBA, he's horrible". Year before that was "who needs Fab Melo". There's always something like this every year, I even remember my favorite. "Melo can leave but I hope Gerry stays" after we won the NC. These aren't things I only heard once either.

I know you're not fighting them, although you should, but I wouldn't let what they say get under your skin. Lifesaver to short to give a shunt what some dolt has to say. Unless its another fanbase talking junk, then fist fight them.

I could write a book on the dumb a$$ stuff that people say during the games. I used to love whe nthe clown behind me would yell "come on higgins" when he wasnt even officiating the game.

Funny you say that...someone nearby me last night said..."Is that Higgins calling this game?! This is awful!" And he was dead serious. One of his buddies set him straight and told him Higgins retired.

Then you must get really irritated by some of the stuff that gets posted on this board.

Haha. This board is 1,000x better than some of the stuff I've heard while at the games. Of course there is stuff I don't agree with, but the insight and discussion on here is fantastic. People post opinions on here. When I hear Rak getting chewed out by a fan when "Rak" is really Jerami Grant, that's where I get annoyed.

You've clearly never checked out the board chat room during a game. ;)

Marsh, I knew I made it as a dad when before a game a few years ago, my 8 year old son turned to me and said, "look Dad, Higgins is doing the game." And it was Higgins. I turned to him and asked "how do you know about Tim Higgins?" His response, "I've been watching you watch SU basketball my whole life."
