Syracuse is 3-0!

That was going to be my next question is do people want a coach who is getting middle of road players or want a guy like Fran who is going to recruit and figure out the coaching later ? I don’t think there’s a perfect model bc a great coach can’t coach average players to victory always and great players can’t win always with average coaching.

Our basketball program shouldnt be the same as our football program. We shouldn't be at a point where we have to pick one or the other. We can get a coach that is good at one and great at the other. It doesn't have to be one or the other.

He would not be making the tournament without talent playing in the acc.
Everyone is bashing Red about D. Red knows D is bad he mentions it in every press conference. He tried to get other players in the portal but it did not work. He’s playing what he’s got.
I expect the rotation to really tighten. Carols and Taylor were misses. Bell has been consistently bad on D but his O kept him on the court. If he continues to slump could see his minutes drop.
Team minutes will start to look a lot different going forward.
How do we know that he wouldn’t be making the tournament? 1 coach has brought a team to the tournament the other hasn’t. Even if langel brought in a bunch of nobodies he has competed with most major teams in the regular season and tournament. Getting guys to go to Colgate versus Syracuse is hugely different.

As for reds take on the D; if he didn’t think it was bad I would have serious concerns he has significant brain damage. It’s obvious to any observer, that’s not impressive. What we want to see is improvement. Any person can tell you what’s wrong, you earn 7 figures by fixing it.

People said the same thing about DJ Burns defense, and NC State made the Final Four. Also, Eddie will improve and has been battling some back trouble. You can see it when he moves out there right now. Plus he managed to be good enough last year to be the starting center on a tournament team.
They almost didn't make it out of the first weekend of the ACC tournament.

They had an AMAZING run, but I don't think DJ had 3 turnstiles starting with him who can't get by a pick properly.

It's not the same.

You're right on the 2021 team, but I'm not sure they got better rather than they just played Kadary a lot more than Joe down the stretch.
I went back and looked, and actually I think Sherman20 had it right…

For the 2020-21 season, here are the minutes per game for JG3, Kadary and Braswell:
- JG3: 27.7 mpg
- KR: 21.0 mpg
- RB: 12.1 mpg

In the last 7 games of the season, when Syracuse went 5-2 (including the run to the Sweet 16):
- JG3: 24.3 mpg
- KR: 18.3 mpg
- RB: 18.7 mpg

And in the last 5 games (ACC Tourney and NCAA Tourney games only), Braswell actually averaged 23.4 minutes per game. His playing time essentially doubled down the stretch, when we were arguably playing our best ball of the season.

The “20 games” thing drives me crazy around here. Who cares if we won 20 games last year? We missed the tournament yet again. Making the tournament is the benchmark of success for a season - not winning 20 games.
They used to go hand in hand back when the big east was top dog…

Isn't down the stretch before the tournaments?

The thing about Boeheim teams is that we almost always got off to fast starts, winning our first 10 or 15 games seemingly every year for a decade or more. And then we always fell apart for a couple weeks in mid-January / early February. Then it was whether we could get back our mojo.

I don't recall him taking many teams that started the season badly and turning it around. Usually, if we started the season badly, we missed the tournament.
That's fair. My only point was there is no trust that Red will win where we almost always thought JB would win.

I feel better saying it in the Stu Feiner voice: "3-0, 3-0, 3-0!"

This is a very fair response, and an equally fair retort is you never know with a guy who excels at coaching at the mid-major level, because he's never been given the resources to get high-level recruits. But you do know that he can coach. Winning takes care of recruiting, typically.

But like you said, there's no perfect formula.
You put a young DC on this team, and they would have won all 3 games by a lot.
DC was fundamentally already a good basketball player when he got here.
Plus he would have knocked down a few people in practice who weren't doing things the right way.

Jimmies & Joes, not X's and O's. We need better talent on the hill. Period.
We have more talent (recruiting rankings wise) than we have since probably 2016 with the Malachi and Lydon class.

I think we should consider starting Starling and Choppa in the backcourt and giving Carlos and (gasp) Cuffe 10-15 min each off the bench.
I wouldn't mind that change to the starters, but I'm still not sure what you see in Cuffe that gets you so excited. Other than any change is worth a shot I guess.

No. We have seen enough of Cuffe and of Carlos to know that 10 to 15 minutes for them is not good for us. Go with Moore and Taylor at the 2 with JJ at the point.

Langel has coached circles around red two years in a row, might as well start with him.
Well, JB lost to Colgate his last 2 games, and Red beat Colgate both games. The head-to-head comparison says Red is a better coach than JB.
