Syracuse vs. Notre Dame game thread

LOL ... 5 minutes to decide you need a FG there?

After these past 2 games, I am no longer a fan of Scott Shafer as a head coach.

What, why in the world are you kicking it there? This staff really boggles the mind. 21-9 early in the 4th and you go for an onside kick and gift them great field position when you actually have a chance to make a game of it by kicking it deep. Then it's 28-9 mid 4th quarter and you kick a field goal, when you have nothing to lose.

It's like they're trying to be cutting edge, and are just too stupid to understand when it makes sense to do those things.

We need a bench coach.
I think Bill Simmons once mentioned in an article that football staffs need a "coach of common sense" because most have none. Would definitely make sense with this staff.

Someone to get in his ear and say, "coach, why the are you kicking here, that makes ZERO sense."

So if the result of the play is 2nd & 7 and they get a sideline interference call, it's 2nd & 23. But because they got a first down, it's 1st & 10 and not 1st & 25 why?

The field goal wasn't about this game. You have a freshman field goal kicker who you're trying to get some experience. You are going to need him to win a future game. Sometimes as a coach you have to think about the big picture not just the moment. Going for it and not getting it isn't going to help anyone either.

Even if he makes that FG, what is the purpose?
.

To get within two scores.

We needed some points, and I think it's determined by the distance of the 4th down. 4th and short you go for it, 4th and long you kick it.

But you can't say Shafer has no balls any more. Dixon fake punt and then the onside kick and went for it on 2 4th downs.

And him missing a chip shot with no pressure helps?

Serves ND right for passing up 19 with 5 minutes left.

That's what practice is for
