I have trouble determining how good/great that 1996 team really was. On the one hand, it finished with a very solid record against an absolute gauntlet of a Big East that year and had a great win at Arizona, on the other hand, it drew arguably the most favorable draw in SU NCAA tournament history.
Nevertheless, what a fun season that was.

Prior to the Waters series, I'd have said that we tend to overrate them based on their likability and the fact that this was the brightest spot in a rather long dry spell. After reading his piece, though, I'm reminded that this was a good team with few bad losses, excellent non-conference wins, and a very strong Big East season.
As always, though, it helps to get a favorable draw. (Then again, that didn't help in 1986, 1988, 1990, 1995, 1999, 2004, or 2005, so more credit to the 1996 group.)
