Talent reality

It’s actually somewhat encouraging that we were able to stay competitive with a lot of these teams and even knock off Clemson with this dearth of draft picks.

Hopefully it gets turned around in the next season or two.

Just think about the players who left when Babers took over, they were *that good*. The ones who stayed don't get their names called, so the transfers were D2 at best.

The cupboard is starting to be refilled with talented players, but we're still a ways away.

We have had a major talent drain since 2012.
Greg Robinson recruited our last really good talent.
He sucked as a coach but he got Nassib, Pugh, Chandler Jones.

Marrone got Bromley 3rd and Sharmako Thomas 4th round picks.

Our pro talent has been piss poor.
Dino is cleaning that up.

A few Sunday morning thoughts:
That we've done as well as we have is tribute to the system, the coaching and of course our players playing their hearts out. Now combine all those positive attributes with a slow and steady upgrade in talent and who knows our potential - this is why it's fun/exasperating to be a fan.

Remember, Wake won the ACC in 2006 and that could be us. In fact last year Wake's QB Wolford completed 64% of his passes for 29 TDs and 6 picks, 3200 yds 8.5 Y/Att while amassing a 158 QB rating (he certainly padded his stats against us - what happened to us in the 2nd half). Their top 3 running backs averaged 5.4, 4.9 and 5.1 and totaled 2000 yds while scoring 18 TDs. This is where we need to be offensively. And that's only an 8-5 Wake Forest team. Last year Dungey was 60% 14 TDs 9 picks 2500 yds (in more attempts than Wolford) 6.4 Y/Att. Toss in Mahoney and the numbers are worse. Our top 3 RBs 4.2 (Dungey), 3.8, 5.3 totaling 1600 yds and 14TDs.

These disparities will soon disappear for 2 reasons: 1. An upgrade in talent relative to where we were and where the ACC is at. 2. Because as that great football prognosticator Bob Dylan so prophetically sang "The times they-are-a-changing"

The larger point is in the ACC arms race we were sorely lacking and yet still fairly competitive at times. We have improved personnel now and our paper thin depth is now cardboard thin. Once the Trill Williams, Abdul Adams, Caleb Okechukwus, Qadir Whites, Gabe Horans and Tommy D's start percolating thru the system we'll be a force once again and not just the little engine that tried. Anyway it's something like that - better players give you better chances to win. I do think it's truly happening and that's exciting. We'll watch with great hope to see how it translates on the field.

Which is why we have to keep Dino. He provides us with a differentiating edge. We have to compete by system. We have to take advantage of perfect indoor playing conditions. He and his staff are our hope.

At least 5 of the 11 SR's have a home, for now.. 13 SR's Next year. Maybe a couple go in the draft.. Hopefully, a steady rising tide.

It does seem the talent level is increasing, but the system has shown the ability to beat more talented teams. Hopefully some more consistency there.. More wins, more incoming talent. Catch 22. Hope we have enough.

Next year I can't really see us having anyone drafted outside of Slayton and *maybe* a healthy Eric Dungey?

Shafer might have been the worst recruiter in Syracuse football history.
Martin? (I didn't watch A&M)

This draft demonstrated just how much talent there is all around our game , FBS or FCS . Alot of talent and thus alot of parity. Big talents are going to smaller schools to play early and as we saw over this weekend, they will be discovered and drafted from anywhere. I mean, wow , a guy like bo scarbrough was taken in the 7th round . All 7 rounds have impact players .

Good thing smarter people prevailed when told that Shafer had to be retained due to his recruiting. Yeesh.

I think we all are finally seeing the ugly underbelly of what FHCSS did to this program. Many many people wore thick orange classes, myself included, while he was our coach. He was a good to great DC, but our worst coach of this century and easily top 5 worse head coaches at SU.
Need Dino to get us to a bowl game this year and then keep the recruiting momentum going strong.

The most embarrassing posts on this board where when Shafer people said we can’t fire him because the whole team will transfer and it will kill recruiting.

Those people were defending a staff they probably got info from it was embarrassing. I said when we hired Shafer we hired the painter after the architect left.

We've been seeing it since the mess of the Penn State game.

Worst coach of this century? ie 2000 onward? Yeah I wouldn't go that far.

Scott Shafer was a bad HC & recruiter? This is the first I am hearing this!
