A few Sunday morning thoughts:
That we've done as well as we have is tribute to the system, the coaching and of course our players playing their hearts out. Now combine all those positive attributes with a slow and steady upgrade in talent and who knows our potential - this is why it's fun/exasperating to be a fan.
Remember, Wake won the ACC in 2006 and that could be us. In fact last year Wake's QB Wolford completed 64% of his passes for 29 TDs and 6 picks, 3200 yds 8.5 Y/Att while amassing a 158 QB rating (he certainly padded his stats against us - what happened to us in the 2nd half). Their top 3 running backs averaged 5.4, 4.9 and 5.1 and totaled 2000 yds while scoring 18 TDs. This is where we need to be offensively. And that's only an 8-5 Wake Forest team. Last year Dungey was 60% 14 TDs 9 picks 2500 yds (in more attempts than Wolford) 6.4 Y/Att. Toss in Mahoney and the numbers are worse. Our top 3 RBs 4.2 (Dungey), 3.8, 5.3 totaling 1600 yds and 14TDs.
These disparities will soon disappear for 2 reasons: 1. An upgrade in talent relative to where we were and where the ACC is at. 2. Because as that great football prognosticator Bob Dylan so prophetically sang "The times they-are-a-changing"
The larger point is in the ACC arms race we were sorely lacking and yet still fairly competitive at times. We have improved personnel now and our paper thin depth is now cardboard thin. Once the Trill Williams, Abdul Adams, Caleb Okechukwus, Qadir Whites, Gabe Horans and Tommy D's start percolating thru the system we'll be a force once again and not just the little engine that tried. Anyway it's something like that - better players give you better chances to win. I do think it's truly happening and that's exciting. We'll watch with great hope to see how it translates on the field.
