Tebow makes a lot of people look stupid

Tebow is an attention whore. That's why he "gives glory to Jesus" and let's everyone know it every possible second. He's prostelizing, which is kind of the definition of being an attention whore. That's the point of why he does what he does.

Most of the deeply religious people I know pray over life and death issues. He prays over touchdowns.

This is the kind of thing that upsets me. How could Tebow be an attention whore? It's not like he is telling the media they need to cover him 24/7. If you knew anything about him you would know he hates the attention, but has grown accepting of it since he has dealt with it since high school. An attention whore doesn't go on missions to the Philippines to help the people there every year since he was little. An attention whore doesn't consistently visit hospitals, charities, invite sick kids to games, etc. Terrell Owens is an attention whore, so you either do not know anything about Tebow and the Christian faith or you are ignorant. The most important part of the faith is to follow in the footsteps of Christ and be a loyal follower that spreads the word of God.

I know it's not all about faith, but if you look at all of the NON-FOOTBALL arguments they deal with either a misunderstanding in the Christian faith or an uniformed argument. Pick his book from the library and read about his life, even if you don't like him. I still read Obama and Bush's books and I don't like them, but we have a duty to be informed about the subjects we talk about. I am just as guilty as anyone else on not being informed as well, and have made myself look like an idiot doing it. We do look like a bunch of idiots to the rest of the world most of the time.

You tried to steal my Matthew 6: 5-6 eye-black joke - although without the smiley face your post makes it seem less like a joke. :)

And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

Haha, no I wasn't joking. And what does "verily I say unto you, they have their reward" mean?

They're being vain - their only reward is the pride they take in showing off their faith.

It means that if you are outspoken in your faith just for the sake of looking good for humans, you get no reward from God. In that case it would be better if you prayed in a closet. However, if you are outspoken in your faith to give glory to God and lead others to Him, God will reward you. This verse speaks not only to the act of prayer, but the attitude behind it. It doesn't mean we can't pray in public if we want, but it means that if the only reason we are praying in public is to look good for others - don't bother. I will admit that there are many believers who pray in public just to be seen by others. From what I have seen, I don't put Tim Tebow in that category.

Yes, Tebow seems like a great guy...I hope he continues to inspire the nation and I hope he can keep up with the high high moral standards everyone has set for him..I just worry because it seems almost impossible (see Favre).

That said...you are realistic with his long term prospects. I think it's a very fair goalpost to set.
I would bet that he sets a higher moral standard for himself than we do

Wow, this has been an entertaining thread. And just to think, as a life long Bronco fan, that attends most games, I dont like him based solely on football. Also have no problem with his beliefs. The only thing I clown him for outside of football is, having written a memoir as an early twenty something. So what other starter in the league today would you not trade him for?

Off the top of my head I would take him over Alex Smith, Tavaris Jackson and Rex Grossman.

Someone has a serious man crush on Tebow. Just to keep things in perspective, this thread is now at 6 pages.

Native: "If the Lord is all-powerful, why does he care whether we worship him or not?"

Homer Simpson: "It's because God is powerful, but also insecure. Like Barbra Streisand before James Brolin."

What do you think of the eye black thing at Florida? He is a good role model, shows a lot of humility in his interviews, but do you really not think that was some pre-orchestrated marketing gimmick by a savvy kid?

I'm not sure but I believe he was wearing those in high school as well? Don't quote me on that but I remember hearing that he had used John 3:16 since the end of his junior year at Neese. I don't think it was marketing gimmick at all...I think he just has extreme faith is the model of a great follower of Christ in an age that our country is no longer that accepting of Christianity and Christian values.

Tim Tebow is now the most famous white bronco since OJ's truck.

A variation of that joke was in the mid-90s. You ask someone, "did you know that John Elway was arrested in connection with the OJ murders?" "They were looking for a slow-moving white Bronco."

Disagree. Do you think Tebow prays and gives thanks any less off the field and off camera than he does while he's own it?

Most "Religious" people only pray when things are bad (like illness and death) and ignore their God when things are going well (life and health). "Religious" people filled Churches, Mosques, Synagogues, etc. after 9/11 and asked "God why?" and have long since emptied out since. "Religious" people also flew the planes into the towers on 9/11.

People with a Spiritual Relationship with God, Jesus, The Profit Muhammad, or whatever they believe give thanks at all times regardless of magnitude or who's watching. They do what they do with or without recognition from other people to try and be a betterment to mankind as a whole regardless of their beliefs or non beliefs all while giving thanks to their God.

The reason Christianity follows him in every conversation is because it's a polarizing fact and you can't hear any sports talk conversation in the media without it being brought up. Media outlets are a whore and if people were indifferent to what Tebow does aside from his play on the field, they wouldn't cover it and ask everyones opinion of it.

Tebow? He's a winner with an ugly throwing motion and accuracy issues. I like him and respect him for being the same person on the field as he is off it. It's refreshing to see from a professional athlete regardless of his beliefs.

I know this thread has been beaten to death but I have to post this because someone questioned how I can say hes a great guy...Who knows what he does in his personal life when the cameras are off, all I do know is that there are literally 2-3 stories EXACTLY like this per week about Tim Tebow. The dude is downright awesome!

I know what you are saying, but understand there is valid skepticism in athletes these days

Look at the great things these guys did...they sound like great people, too.

You don't know him off the field...anymore than you know Kobe Bryant or Albert Pulojs or Donovan McNabb. Neither do I, by the way...but I'm not claiming I do.

Just from checking around the interwebI'm fairly sure he didn't wear it in high school (not positive), but I also didn't know that it was so popular for college kids to put messages on their eyeblack.

Reggie Bush and many other college players before Tebow have worn messages on their eye black. Be it their area code, a symbol, or a national flag. Tebow is far from the first to do it, and I think personally think he has good intentions by the eye black.
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. -John 3:16, the message in question. This verse is the definition of faith within the Christian community. This is not a verse to be used lightly by any means, and I feel there is no way that a son of a devout Christian minister that has been raised his entire life as a faithful and devout follower of Christ would use this as a marketing gimmick. I think he just wants to win football games, spread his Faith, and help those in need... Tiger Woods and Brett Favre came from very different backgrounds from Tebow.

Right but with ESPN, TMZ, Yahoo, etc. chasing these people around at all times looking for a story famous peoples transgressions are made known in a hurry. You don't think one of these places would love to post any dirt they have on him? They would've outted him at Florida and they certainly would be outting him now. Can you imagine the ratings? Instead you google him and read storys about charity and missionary work from smaller news outlets. If he was making in rain in the club ESPN would be all over it.

People with stuff to hide usually spend alot of time hiding it. This kid is everywhere and seems pretty transparent IMHO. But you're right I don't know him off the field... of course how well do you really know anyone?
