And more importantly if you're down 11 you're still going to need a 2 point conversion to tie. It's better to go for two earlier, and know what you're working with either way since it affects your strategy. Saving the 2 point conversion for the end often means if you fail, it's too late to adjust your strategy accordingly.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that they did the right thing analytically.
