Tennessee Postgame

Sadiq had a great game himself. Definitely his best game during his young career so far.
Devo I think said he looked like the most likely to end up in the NBA the fastest. Prob right. Imagine what NBA coaches will turn him into. He has no fear!

Well. I’m just going to enjoy the win.

I thought JJ had two really big shots for us to stem the tide. The 3 and the pull up mid range shot. Huge plays. That Larry Bird Special should make the espn top 10. Also want to give him credit for that first assist to Kings for the 3. Got him going.

Kyle played about as good defensively in the post as possible. Blocks and drew charges. Super effort. Just a warrior out there. Good for him hitting that free throw, but what a horrific decision to run a slip screen to him in that spot.

It’s been said a couple times already, but Nate Kings completely flummoxed Gillespie. What a luxury to have a wing defender with his size. Also like how well he gets to the basket. That he didn’t get looks in the 2nd was disappointing.

Sadiq is getting some high quality experience with Donnie out. Will only help us later in the season. Love his energy. He can board, jump and shoot. Really needs to work on his handle.

I thought Kiyan played within himself tonight. Took good shots, played respectable defense.

Since I can’t say anything nice about Nait George, I’m going to say nothing. He’s got to get better.

This is a really good defensive team. It can show up every night. I really prefer offensive teams - I just find it more enjoyable to watch- but those off nights get ugly. No reason for this team to get blown out badly when it can throw stoppers out there at three positions.

Offensively, we’re just carpet bombers. We need to take 100 shots to get 70 points. There are no easy baskets for us.

Let’s rest Donnie against the cupcakes, get him ready for league play and take our chances.

Hope we give him a few more looks a game down on the block. He’s got a little hook shot and turn around that would be great to develop. He’s needs to play closer to the hoop on offense. He makes good things happen.

Kyle's FT seals the win!! No Donnie and they were 100%. Makes my Vegas trip not as bad. My initial reaction in Vegas was that Tenn and Iowa St. were the best teams there. I'll take it
I was at the airport for Iowa State, but agree about Tennessee. I watched them play Houston and walked away saying they were the best team I saw in Vegas.

Agree good analysis. We really just need to push it nearly every possession and get easy baskets, especially without Donnie.

That said there was a nice play we ran for Kiyan off a screen that set up a Sadiq play. Wish we ran more action like that. Kiyan and Sadiq in particular have good chemistry together.

Reminds me of Stacey Augmon. While in college, I would implore him to work on his 3 point shot non-stop. He has a real chance to be a difference maker at the next level but in the league now you need to knock down that jumper to play the 3/4 now.

Good win from an ugly game.
But it’s a building block.

I would still like it if the staff looked at how we consistently passed around the perimeter for zero effect, while Tenn moved it with purpose and effect.

Has anyone seen Tenn play before? Was that them at their worst? I don’t see a top 15 team. Good defense + Carey, not much else.
Yes. I watched the Tennessee Houston game in Vegas and thought Tennessee was the best team I saw out there. But we also looked pretty good. Don't forget that if we made a few more foul shots, we would have walked away with 2 more wins, and probably a different game on Wednesday.

four games in a row against top 15 teams. We could not throw the ball in the ocean from three or the free throw line in any of those games . Lost one in overtime, were two points away with four minutes left in another and won one. Absolutely incredible our offense could perform so poorly, and be in all these games. If Betsy, Kings, Anthony, and George can start hitting their threes at 35%, We will be very dangerous.

Really curious how far an inbound passer is allowed to back up to throw it in.

I believe you can move 3’ feet from where the ref passes you the ball. So I think it was legal.

But also, its sort of a gamesman move to stand, basically, in the cheerleader/media area and the ref wasn’t running a particularly tight ship to pass it to him there.

This is the type of team that can grow throughout the year, and be unstoppable in March.
