Terrence Clarke killed in car accident

Of course "you don't have an obligatory right of way when running a red light." However, you certainly don't when going through/running a red light AND making a left turn into ongoing traffic, which is what the pickup truck that struck Clarke's vehicle was apparently doing if the light was indeed red. IMO and experience, that was the proximate cause of the collision. The pickup truck clipped/struck Clarke's vehicle with its front end. That fact & particular point of impact will substantially come into play.

The car ahead of Clarke's you mention was in the further right lane in which Clarke's vehicle was traveling. When Clarke's vehicle passed it, it wasn't actually stopped, but it was certainly slowing down. Perhaps, it was slowing down to make a right turn whereas Clarke's vehicle was going straight through? The vehicle that was "going the other way" that stops at the intersection was also in the furthest lane to the right, and the black pickup truck was in the lane to its left. Perhaps, that vehicle was slowing down to make a right turn just as the vehicle that preceded it a few seconds earlier did? Also, the black pickup that appeared to be "trying to beat the light" had two vehicles from the opposite direction make left turns after it went through it. Additionally, the first of those two vehicles was turning left just as the pickup that struck Clarke was making its left turn. Therefore, it's somewhat difficult IMO to determine just how "clear" that running the red light was from the video that I saw.

No doubt, there's still several uncertainties that will factor in as the accident gets "reconstructed," etc. There will be comparative negligence on Clarke if indeed running the red and speed played a role. However, from experience, the pickup truck that struck Clarke's vehicle in this particular instance is probably going to bear the brunt of the liability/exposure in my opinion.

I understand he's gone and that is an obvious tragedy. However, it will matter to those loved ones commencing the wrongful death case on his behalf in the future.

the LAPD said he was speeding, ran a red light and was improperly wearing his seatbelt. Looking at the video, if he’s running a red light while other cars in both directions are turning left at that light I’m assuming they had green arrows.

You can have more than one proximate cause for a crash. Running a red light and speeding are proximate causes too.

Also, the truck could have a $25k policy and then it doesnt even matter.
