Terrific interview with Donnie Mac

...on Shrader, on Clemson, on SU and it's relationship with former athletes, etc. etc., etc.

It's fantastic. I just got down listening. Axe is doing a great job with his podcast. Depressing how they are still not engaging much with former players.

Don's book on "aspirational masculinity" :

I would love to have heard a discussion on this between Donnie Mac and Jim Brown.

I tried to figure out who Donnie is referring to at 11:00. Unfortunately, while my collection of SU Yearbooks/Media guides doesn't include 1985 or 1986, for some reason, (what the heck was I doing those years?). The 1984 Yearbook has a guy named Al Sandahl as the "passing game/quarterbacks coach". Strangely, Norm Gerber is listed as the defensive coordinator but nobody is listed as an offensive coordinator. This says Sandahl was the OC: Wetaskiwin & County Sports Hall of Fame - Our Great Athletes
1984 was Donnie's first year after he was injured in the '83 opener, (which allowed him to be our QB in '87).

I was actually thinking about you SW when I saw this on YouTube as you are the board historian; what is your take on Don’s statement that hopefully GS can solidify himself as top 5 SUFB QB of all time by the end of the season?

Al Sandahl was the offensive coordinator for the one season.

I think he has no? He’s definitely in the top 7 since DMac. Graves, Philcox, McNabb, Nassib, Dungey, Shrader.

We would have to go on a run obviously this season but I think he might be ahead of Dungey when all is said and done. Need to get in a decent bowl and win it though.

I don't know about top but he's in the top group:

Don McPherson produced 65TDs and had 26 interceptions (they don't have fumbles) in 44 games

Marvin Graves produced 65TDs vs. 45 picks in 43 games

Donovan McNabb produced 96TDs vs. 26 int in 45 games

Ryan Nassib produced 75TDs vs. 28 int in 47 games

Eric Dungey: 93TD 30int in 39 games

Garrett Shrader so far: 61TD 14int in 28 games

Those earlier guy’s numbers were held back by our style of offense though.

Graves was so good at pitching the ball at just the right time - something he got no statistical credit for.

But he got tired of running the option, (which he did well) because he was slightly built and got beat up doing it.

He’s not?

He’s not?
I believe he is but I’m not familiar with QBs of the past as I’ve only been following for three years. You will not find a bigger Shrader supporter on this board than me.

Others:

Bernie Custis: They have no info in TDs.

Pat Stark: 19TD 12int in 27 games.

Chuck Zimmerman: 24TD 7int in 26 games.

Dave Sarette: 27TD 22int in 29 games.

Wally Mahle: 22TD 14 in in 27 games.

Rick Cassata: 24TD 22int in 30 games.

Bill Hurley: 36TD 18int. It says he played 11 games each year for 5 years but that's nonsense.

Todd Philcox: 18TD 11int in 33 games, (he was our holder for placekicks until he was a senior)

Bill Scharr: 16TD 8int in 33 games

Kevin Mason: 19TD 9int in 26 games

Troy Nunes: 38TD 32int in 39 games

RJ Anderson: 34TD 23int in 32 games

Perry Patterson: 32TD 25int in 41 games

Andrew Robinson: 14TD 11int in 29 games

Greg Paulus: 14TD 14int in 11 games

Terrell Hunt: 24TD 13ints in 19 games

Tommy DeVito; 38TD 12ints in 26 games

He’s not?
I think it’s too early because he’s in the running for the #4-6 spots.

I’m curious to see how people rank Dungey, Shrader, and Nassib, when the end of the season comes.

If Shrader plays great all year, he’ll have a strong argument for number 1.

If he gets banged up and doesn’t do much the second half and we finish 6-6 or something with no real huge wins, he’s probably number 3.

A fun chore. 1. Donnie McPherson Finished 2ud in the Heisman and led us to a unbeaten season.
2. Donovan McNabb I think he was the o player of the year in the Big East 3 straight years
3. Eric Dungey I loved the kid. Tough. Tough Tough
4. Ryan Nassib The numbers are the numbers
5 G.S I'm hoping the last 8 games justify this
6 Marvin Graves I think he was the mvp of 3 straight bowl games
7. Bill Hurley If we had a defense to go with him, he might actually be higher
8 Todd Philcox A winner and a great game manager

I have seen all of these guys play

I haven’t seen them all play. For the ones I have, I’d go:

McNabb
Graves
Dungey
Nassib
Shrader

At the moment.

Though I don’t feel like I need to have seen McPherson play to know he’s either 1 or 2 - Heisman runner up and undefeated says it all.

Fair to say McNabb - better career, McPherson - best season?

I would already put him ahead of Philcox and Nassib. As good as Philcox was, he only started for one year and Nassib was more game manager than playmaker.

McPherson had a pretty good career once they started him his soph season. But I would have to say McNabb better career
