What bugs me is this: the defense had been on the field a prolonged time at the end of regulation. We win the coin toss and elect to send them right back out there for OT. OK, I understand it's highly desirable to have last ups in OT. So Pitt marches back into the endzone with little resistance, and our defense now seems even more gassed. On our first play of the next possession, why even consider a quick strike TD? As others have noted, the smart move was to throw the ball away and live to fight another down.
We needed to buy the defense a breather - unless we were planning to roll the dice on a 2 point conversion to end the game. Had we kicked an extra point and sent the tired defense right back on the field it seems our chances for success would have been mighty low.
Anyone think we would have gone for a 2-pointer if the pass had been completed? Maybe a good question to throw at coach on the next call-in show.
