That onside kick call

The reality is this coaching staff was hired to get more sec level talent. If they can’t do it the scheme won’t matter either. We’ve lost with good coaches who try to out scheme with inferior talent too. We’re trying a different approach. Who knows what will happen but not like the prior approach was working either.
Completely agree. I like this staff and I'm not wringing my hands too much. Fran and Erob making big step ups in coaching class. This is a long-term project.

We need a tackling guru any suggestion?
I honestly think I could do it. I know for sure I wouldnt make it any worse.
They gotta run repetitive drills that drill and drill and drill into their brains the basic fundamentals of tackling.
Contain
Watch torso
Stay low
Head up, eyes level
Generate power with legs
Wrap up and Drive!

The drills need to be run til they are like Watdefuq?
At that point repetition slows everything down a tad and better decisions are made.

Im pretty sure every defensive player at this level has gone thru this but obviously they need an old school brain whooping refresher.

Funny thing is, reading the GDT, the same poster posted literally 5 different times desperately trying to defend the call.

ADJW might have to step in and demand we hire a guy w/ DC experience who can also handle special teams. Robinson can recruit, but his feel for calling a defense is terrible…and the fundamentals are missing.
ERob won’t stay here to get demoted. Which is fine by me. He only landed diggs. Who else?

Short fields off the missed 4th down, LQA fumble, Kyle safety, and short fields off free kick impacted more than botched onside call.
That's impossible to know.

Can't do much with 3 rush

I’m not one to hold back on the ref’s, but this game was lost on defense giving up 37 points to a one dimensional team is simply inexcusable. That’s why we lost.
I don't think anyone is claiming the bad onside kick call is why we lost. It was a bad call that effectively ended the game when we should have had one more chance to win.

Yes, I get it - I guess what I’m saying is I’d normally be in the torches and pitchfork crowd since I think it was a terrible call, but on this one I simply cannot.

If you can’t make contact before 10 yards then why sit back and wait, why dosent the receiving team all just run up inside 10 yards and let contact be made. The kid was at like 9.95 yards.

the call reminded me of the sock/uniform call vs Tennessee

I appreciate all this .. but the all time What is going on here hose job was when the bills were at the Texans in the playoffs and the NFL sent Sadam Hussain’s personal guard out onto the field to over turn a bills TD

I saw three things that I don't think I've seen before in football:

(1) The officials not being ready for a snap
(2) In real time it looked like one of the officials was involved with Allen not snagging that deflection
(3) That "block" on the onside kick

I'm curious where the horrible officials from the PAC went?

ERob will get more time, but I agree he needs some help. Hopefully he listens.

It's a tricky thing. As anyone knows that has climbed the ladder professionally, part of what gets you up some rungs is belief in yourself and belief that what you're doing is the right thing. You need a certain amount of confidence and certainly.

It's very clear that if ERob wants to keep climbing, or even just stay where he is on the ladder, he's going to have to learn and level up. Hard to do in season. How we look next season will be telling.

Fwiw scheme wise I do think he's chosen a harder path. As much as Shafer was limited as a HC, his chaos and disruption style of defense is better fit to a program like ours I think that's not stacking highly ranked recruiting classes. McDonald for example was a lot better last season when his assignment was about action instead of reaction. Maybe this scheme is great for us in 3-4 years when the classes stack up. But right now it does seem soft and mismatched. Way too early to give up on Robinson though.
Would've been interesting to see if FB could've kept Rocky on staff and still bring ER as co-DC.

I remember coach P saying during bye weeks they would use them to emphsize fundamentals. I wonder if FB does any of that.

Speaking of the officials not being ready to “officiate”, the same thing actually happened in the Pitt/UVA game.

The call was actually more egregious as UVA had the ball and initiated the snap when they were stuffed on fourth and short. If the play stood, Pitt takes over with plenty of time left down by two I believe. Instead, the Cavaliers run time off and extend the lead forcing the Panthers to look for the TD late.

I 99 percent of the SU game was due to an inability to stop the run but the chances were obviously there to win it.

I recall Fran saying bye week is community service and academics. You could see the results in the 2 games after the bye.

Remind me if I am likely wrong - wasn't Villari hit early in the GT game onsides kick which caused all sorts of fun?

It's amazing the goofy calls that have gone against us the last few years.

He was, which is why I was so puzzled yesterday. Refs are terrible at nearly all levels. Nobody wants to be a ref anymore and honestly, I don't blame them. They're yelled at by parents at the youth level so anyone sane avoids it. So you end up with the best ones being the best of a weird bunch.

So - we had that call go against us twice this year? That and flop-tastic Clemson two years ago. Amazing. Such a stupid sport.

They still have practice.

agreed. Community service didn't take away one minute of practice. In addition to being a great thing to do it builds the team through a common purpose outside of the game.
