The 2021 "at least we're not UConn" thread

The fact that the governor of Connecticut has finally realized what type of monies are involved by being in or not in a power conference is probably the turning point for UCONN football. The certainly still have a chance to get into a P5 if they get their act together.

If you look at his record at UCLA, you'd have to think the people there were ego maniac idiots for firing him, 1 losing season!
yeah, always just look at winning %

They most certainly don't have a chance to get into the P5

make the case

what conference?
UCONN is a high level academic school. They have top shelf men's and women's basketball. They have extensive and high level alumni bases from NYC to Boston. If they can get their football program to be a least respectable, the B1G, the ACC and the Big12 would all be taking a close look, if they aren't already.

I'm going to take the opposite view as almost everyone here - I think the Mora hire will be a disaster for UConn.

I think there are probably many very good reasons Mora hasn't been able to get a head job ANYWHERE for the past 4 years and had to take this bottom of the barrel job for only $1.5 million per year.
I agree with this. Best case scenario, he has a little success and moves on quickly but he’s not got any ties or reason to grow roots there (even via disciples). Worst case is, well, present state. This feels like another spin like their P and Edsall 2.0 hires. Safe payday for him and a big challenge without too much accountability.

His NFL experience is going to carry a lot of weight with recruiting networks.

Basketball will continue to drive the UConn bus

True to a large extent, but even Lamont realizes the big money to run college sports athletic departments comes from football, not basketball. If they want to stop having to backfill the big hole in the UCONN athletic budget, he needs to get them into a P5 conference. I wouldn't underestimate the state government of Connecticut's ability to do that.

There are no eyeballs for UCONN football. For any conference to add them they have to convince the rest of the members that taking less money per team to keep UCONN football afloat is worth it. Basketball does help a touch, but it’s a football world.

Lightning didn't strike twice. The original ACC raid of 2003 instantly vaulted UConn into a BCS league because they were already there for other sports. Think of all the programs across the country that had accomplished so much more on the football field that were still left out of the party.

When Louisville was admitted over UConn, the college football gods were correcting themselves.
Exactly right. And I believe that had UCon had the foresight (no let’s say common sense) to upgrade their football at the formation of the Big East Football conference, they would be in the ACC today. They diddled around, and let every other BE school clear the path for them, build the product and invest on faith, while they sat it out. When they finally took advantage of their grandfathered status it was too late. They blew it. They had a benefit that no other D1 school ever had, namely the chance to waltz right into a BCS level conference without ever paying any dues.

They have been late to the party, party crashers their entire existence. Lather, rinse, repeat. I have great disdain for their athletic program and hope they fail miserably. Serves them right.

That's a very well done piece, and it captures all the factors that have sunk UConn over the past decade.

It bears repeating, UConn had a very real chance to get into the ACC, both when we were admitted, and when Maryland left. Two things really doomed UConn: (1) they clearly didn't put max effort into selling the ACC on themselves, which is really inexcusable; and (2) they let football degrade quickly post-Edsall's first tenure.

I love what Coach P did for SU, but he was a terrible hire for UConn (and that's not hindsight, I said it at the time). The fact that he was hired, and that there was an Edsall second act, really shows how poorly the UConn football program has been run.

And I don't buy for a second that they can really turn things around. Maybe they could win 5 games if the stars align with their schedule. But recruiting is going to be next-to impossible. Their only shot at even mediocrity is if Mora is a A+ developer of talent, and I don't think that's likely.
I started to read the article. Had to stop. The first few paragraphs told me that she missed the point of what is at the core of UConn football.

I'm no fan of UCONN, but there are no other pieces on the board. If they got to be decent and were in a major conference and had big name teams coming in, they would generate some significant viewer ratings. Same with UMASS.

Their board is hilarious. Posters complaining that ESPN should have MADE the ACC take UConn because ESPN is located in Connecticut and the state is giving ESPN tax breaks. ESPN owes it to UConn to be in the ACC. Doesn’t matter that they weren’t wanted and their football program is a complete bottom feeder.

Delusional.

They should have sued ESPN.

When UConn first graced the BE football conference with their intent to become part of the conference, I went to their board to try and have a friendly dialogue with them. We had recent history as rivals with basketball for about the ten years prior, and I always enjoy football more so this was my chance to meet some UConn fans. It was insane. There was no having a rational discussion with them - aside from one or two who tried to be civil. An entitled group of &#+^>¥#<s who had no idea that football was played prior to 2000.

I finally threw my keyboard hands up, added “Alpha and Omega” as a tongue in cheek jab at them that SU was the beginning of the BE and we would be the end of it. Ended up kind of prophetic. UCon fans can go kick rocks in FCS.

They are the same way with basketball. History before 1999 doesn't matter, because they didn't mean anything to anyone prior to 1999. Of course, like you said, that is what appears to be the great majority of their fans, not all of them.
