The 2021 "at least we're not UConn" thread

Do you know of many other HCs worth a damn that sat out 4 years? And if he sat out because he was getting paid and his contract runs out 1/22 why did he already take a job with UConn?

Governor Ned Lamont

@GovNedLamont
Jim Mora is the spark and jolt of confidence @UConnFootball needs to see success on the field. I congratulate David Benedict and Husky Nation on this great hire which brings experience to our team. I can't wait to see our athletes in action under Mora's leadership. Go Huskies!

That didn’t answer my questions.

Mora is going to put UCONN on the map. I'm already looking at the game next year coming out of the automatic win category. He is going to portal hard, something the Orange should be doing as well.

Sometimes when I read these posts, I think you’re not real. But I know you are.

Your appreciation for the potential of UConn and UMass football is so sincerely unique.

I wonder if you play out an early to mid 90s Calhoun vs Calipari matchup in your head roughly 18 hours per day.

Your honestly asking why a person who is getting paid more than 3 million dollars a year to not work doesn't go out and get a job and forego that free money? He is getting promised a lot more if the gov of Connecticut is involved. I thought the only place a governor gets involved in college football is the south.

Well he took a job before his contract with UCLA is up (and that assumes you’re correct that he’s still getting paid. Some schools pay in a lump sum). And I asked for examples of other HCs that sat out 4 years.

No Chip. I look at conference expansion like a game of Risk. Now the only region that is unclaimed that is of any consequence is New England. The ACC has BC there but BC has no fan support. If one of the other P5 moves in and takes New England, that leaves Syracuse on an island, not good. Currently the ACC has total control of New York, Virginia, North Carolina and has the stronger position in Florida and South Carolina. They have OK stakes in Ga and Pa. I think they should add UCONN and UMASS and close out the board and tell Notre Dame to get lost.

Les Miles sat out for a time. I don't know about Herman. coaches don't usually get fired if they are having success, I think Mora was, but people at UCLA are nuts.

Still avoiding the questions. Miles sat out 2 years which isn’t totally unreasonable. Show me anyone that sat out 4 if they were any good? And why did he take a job now before 1/22?

Maybe he got the last payment already. Paid on 11/1 for the last quarter. Mac Brown sat out for quite a while.

So he wasn’t under contract until 1/22? You think he got paid in one lump sum? Articles I read indicate that. As to lack brown, yes he was out of coaching for a long time. But I’m sure many schools would have lived for him to come out of retirement.

He is currently employed at UCONN as an assistant coach, probably until the end of the year as to not break his contract with UCLA.

LOL. So you can still be under contract to one school while you coach at another. BTW, Mack Brown wasn’t fired either.

Cous. I appreciate your wish for football to be bigger in the northeast. The only thing I can give you here? The only way I see Mora having any success, is through the portal.

Freeze did, and they just earned a CUSA spot, this week. My issue is that EVEN IF Mora succeeds in that? The choice HAS to be hoops. (Even for less $$)

Their Gals hoops team was SO DAMN good, that they actually got media mention in a 100% pro MALE market. Folks knew they existed. I knew people that had seasons tix that lived 2 and 3 hours away. I'm Orange, but that was freaking impressive. I loved the college attention, and that it was the gals.

NO WAY I'd mess with that. Only if Mora has success with the portal, and ONLY if a conference will take them for football only, will they have any relevance. Unlikely.

Best case is that football earns a G5 affiliation. Most local kids will go FCS, Ivy, over UMass. Only UConn has a chance for a mediocre G5 program. The problem? I'd put hoops above all of that, too...

When this expansion thing is done, teams in the P5 are going to be getting upwards of a 100 million, let's say 70 -100. Teams that aren't in that division are going to be getting 10 or so, if their lucky. Look at the big picture, the governor is involved and they went out and got a pretty damn big name coach, IMO. They want in and are going all out to get in.

The Governor made a tweet about a public schools football hire. You act like he made the hire and is paying the salary.

He stated that he and his office are behind UCONN football playing at the highest level. The GOVERNOR of Connecticut, a state in the New England region where I have been lectured to at length, they have no interest in college football.

Yawn

" I coached in the NFL and I know what it takes and what is expected to get there and you will get starting and or playing time from day 1".
These kids were six when he was in the nfl, he didn’t succeed, he didn’t do well enough to stick at ucla and he’s been out of work for four years. And he has no history or connections in the region. How is this possibly compelling for any kids who have options?

He will be going after "adults" in the portal mostly, not high school kids. Guys who are desperate for PT and have received a lot of high level development at their current schools.

So let me make sure I understand this.

1. Jim Mora didn't take any other jobs because he was getting paid to not work.
2. He's an amazing coach that's going to lead UConn to new amazing heights. This is despite them being behind the financial 8 ball and in an area with weak high school football.
3. Despite his reputation as an amazing coach, he is choosing to take a job at UConn over a more high profile job now that he has decided to coach again.

All of that makes total sense to me.

IMO, he is taking the UCONN job because that program is at the bottom and he can manage the roster any way he wants, like bring in a mass of portal guys to start right off the bat. If he does that, I would think he is one of the most astute coaches out there. Also, IMO, he probably has more things in his contract as to the progress of the program that could be huge.

So he sought out a program with a terrible roster on purpose? That makes sense too. I'm surprised more elite coaches don't do that.

OMG no!

JUST DON'T GO AFTER ASIA! NOBODY CAN KEEP CONTROL OF ASIA!!!

I honestly can’t tell if you’ve taken on UConn and UMass as your cause celebre and just can’t find a way to keep from dying on this hill, or if you get paid by someone to come here and repeat this stuff. Honestly.
