The Big Picture

I agree with all your points.

Dungey is a REAL leader, has attitude and fearlessness, though I cringe when he takes off, big time programs have those players with EDGE an his team feeds off it.

DeVito did ok, Not his fault that Pierce fumbled, and there was a holding call on the Custis play.

A win on the road is big no matter who or where you are playing.

I don't think they showed all of the offense that they want to show, I think they wanted to impose their will and run the ball, something we have not been able to do.

Would like to see more pressure on the QB, when it happened it resulted in a TO.

I do think Dino should have let Dungey finish the first half, Dungey was unstoppable and it very well could have been the final dagger if we had scored before the half.

Win is a win, I will not apologize and we move on to next week.
I didn't mind DeVito taking the last series of the 2nd half. I didn't mind him starting the 2nd half. I also wouldn't have minded if after the breather before half if Dungey came in to start the second.

Really, if either the offense performed better and got a score or the defense got any stop, we're fine.

If I had told everyone on Thursday, that we’d walk out 2-td winners, would you have grabbed that?

This is why I’m asking...

Be frustrated about the Butler drops, the Scoop struggles and the Tommy D situation all you want, it’s irrelevant. This is why I say that...

1) mission accomplished 1-0. Time to tighten up with another dress rehearsal before FSU. Our 2nd game in the friendly confines of the Dome in as many weeks.

2) Custis emerged / Pierce is good - now we need to figure out the other half.

3) Cisco learned - only way to do it, he’s going to be a stud. Frederick looked pretty damn good. Dino went to true Fr Trilliams in a time of need and he played wellll. We have young, real talent back there, now was the right time for it to start to get seasoned. PS - we had two pics and won the turnover battle.

4) RB YPC - these averages need to be taken in context, how many runs came out of the power package during situational periods (tight RZ and 3/4th & short)? A lot, the avg is misleading. We have two steady backs, I believe Moe’s better, but, Dontae’s fine for what we need them for.

5) Tommy D - Needed/(s) experience. Well, he broke the seal. Nobody liked the timing, or the game of chicken we played bc it jeopardized the game. It doesn’t matter now, we won and TD got some reps. BTW, how bout that arm strength and some sneaky athleticism in there. I’m looking for him to improve against Wagner.

7) LB’s overperformed from my house - very pleasantly surprised.

8) DL - let’s get a bit more of a sampling before we condemn. I saw some things I liked that didn’t necessarily produce sacks.

9) Attitude - we play with it. Not just Dungey, everyone from jump. It’s why we jumped all over W. Mich. I LOVE that, our guys love the game, the competition, it matters.

Overall, moving on out with a grocery list of improvements needed and a tuneup before a huge matchup with FSU at home. Sitting in A position, the best possible spot we could’ve been.

I mean really, for all the downside I’m hearing, we scored 55 on a team that most were wringing their hands about this week and outperformed Vegas, who thought this was damn close to a toss up.

Enjoy the wins - learn from them without the sting of a loss.
Spot on about taking the positives here. To much focus on negative slants. Take the win on the road, no major injuries, plus learnings for a number of players and move on to the next game. We should be going 2-0 into the FS game at home with hopefully a healthy Dungy at the reigns.

Without regard to the negative aspects of the game, I enjoyed it immensely. I found lots of positives:

1. We won our opener on the road against a decent team - it was a must game and we were in charge
2. Dungey came back gangbusters after last years' injuries
3. Devito played a good bit and got a great education - extremely valuable experience
4. The linebackers are better than we feared
5. The team started strong, then battled back after adversity - also valuable experience
6. We won, dammit!!

"sneaky athleticism" - TD is a VERY athletic dude, his SPARQ score at whatever camp he got that rating at was pretty insane for a QB.
Dino said it in his presser - TD is not as big as Dungey, but he's probably faster.
And I don't think anybody questions that he has a great arm.

LB's were mostly pretty solid - Whitner was a STUD. Dude just made plays.
WMU's OLine is a strength for them, and our DLine played pretty well against them.
Was hoping for more pressure and sacks, but they were solid.

1-0. Covered on the road, blew up the over.
On to Wagner.

I am hung up on the throw to Custis that got called back for holding.

Have we EVER had a QB that could make a throw of that level of difficulty while on the move?

First game action in 2 years means he clearly has a long way to go and limited sample size but that throw and the frozen rope to Strickland...kid seems like a true talent...

The TV timeouts were killing us at the game. The first quarter was brutal. Maybe last 90 minutes. Then the injury timeouts. I don’t know how the team stays ready to play when the TV jockey controls the pace of play.

Does anyone know if the WMU kid who was carted off the field is ok?

Great result overall. Play a decent opponent on the road, win, no serious injuries, learn where your weak spots are and what you need to work on. And Dungey hopefully gets you some notice with his typical effort.

1-0 baby.

The score was 55-21 with Dungey in the game, against a 5 pt underdog on the road, on grass, a team that took USC late into the 4Q on the road last year. Michigan State needed a very late TD to beat Utah State last night, Wake went to OT to beat Tulane. Plenty to work on but take the freaking win and be happy. And pray Dungey can stay healthy. And hope the NCAA approves Jackson and/or Adams to play this year, that wouldn’t hurt
I agree. To further your point, PSU needed overtime to squeak by App State.

WMU wasn’t a pretty game by any means, but a one game sample size this early in the year is meaningless except to say: we beat WMU, and Dungy is a man amongst boys.

I agree with that.
Game was four hours mainly because it took twenty minutes to get an injured WMU player off the field. Three other WMU injuries also took a significant amount of time. Nature of potential spinal injury requires this what would you expect them to do. That combined with the unending and all to often TV timeouts are what made this game seem unending.

That's a good point.

Our best inside WR didn’t play (N.Johnson), the O looked vanilla (prolly for FSU), and we scored on 9 of 10 drives Dungey QBd
Who says he’s the best inside wr? He hasn’t done jack on the field. This board is ridiculous.

Everybody keeps saying grass but I'm 95% sure it was field turf. Nobody had dirt or grass stains on their unis.

I agree with much of the OP but let me ask this question. If I had told everyone that, after the game, Dungey would have tape on his right shoulder and ice on his left, would you feel good about him lasting an entire season?

Add to that the guy diving on his foot. You could see ED did not have the speed on his run towards the cone and was easily caught. IMO, his foot may be his achilles heel. Tough kid and fights through all kinds of pain.

Babers had him in the two deep. I’ve seen Riley play. I’ve seen Johnson play. He’s injured.

I think it’s pretty clear he is going to start. Usually a coach starts the best player at a position.

Who do you got as the best inside WR on our team currently?
