The athletic department also deserves a heaping helping for the way they schedule. Two B1G teams to start the season before the first home game? Way to destroy any excitement fans had for the season. I hope they enjoy the 12k crowd at the Dome Saturday.

Take a cue from the bball team, dynasties can be built on cupcakes. No one remembers who the 9-3 record was against 4 years later, they just remember the Gator bowl berth.

Now this I can agree with 1000%.

cant be a rutgirls and bitch about how they schedule-

laying blame on the schedule is total bs-even the sec schools have played some real teams to open the season

this is about a team that wasnt prepared to win from the start

Dr. Gross...you have a 17, hit or stay? I'll take a hit please. Of course let's also say that we were suppose to have a coach for life with Marrone and he shuffled so I'd guess TGD thought he was going to be ok.

The majority of the SEC schedules fluff for the first week or two 3 out of 4 years. We schedule legit teams the first two games 3 out of 4 years. Hard to recruit when we have a half empty Dome every year on display because of this scheduling philosophy.

I mean the fan base complains when we fill schedule against wagners and when we fill it with better teams. Sorry but penn state isn't very good and you schedule years out. Aside from the fact that really only conference play matters renders most of the griping irrelevant.

The lack of communication, coordination, etc., s 10000 percent on the coaches. Anyone that's played 10 seconds of football can see the pending disaster in between plays.

The PSU game, I will cut the athletic department SOME slack on. It was a payday thing, and a NYC branding thing. I absolutely HATE opening up with a tough game, but at least I understand it.

As far as Northwestern goes, my guess is that when this series was signed Northwestern was, um, Northwestern.

Totally agree with this. So far this season our coaching staff has looked like total amateur hour. They look totally lost on the job.

The fans are more to blame than the AD. If we had scrubs scheduled, our fickle fanbase would be complaining about our soft early schedule. Anyone involved with scheduling can't win with our fans.

SEC schools can schedule whoever they want and fill their stadiums, their fans show up regardless. The only way for us to come close to filling ours is to schedule good recognizable teams and beat them the year after having a good season. Our fans won't show up if we schedule no-names.

Could the lack of communication have anything to do with a whole new coaching staff to include a first time head coach and OC breaking in a new QB, on the road against talented teams with veteran top notch head coaches? Would the team have benefited from playing a MAC or 1AA team in the opener? I believe they would. I also believe we beat Pen St if we play that game second.

Yep. The only thing you can lay on DG is the coach he picked. Our evaluation time should be spent on the coach and players, not the water under the bridge.

I've always like the fact that SU does not schedule like Rutgirls.

Our fans show up when we win as JB has proved through the years, this area likes to see winners, the crunch win and people show up. The chiefs had Toronto as a parent club, and lost all the time, so people didn't care anymore, and don't go to games even with a new affiliation. In this area win, or people will make an excuse to stay home.

I'm just not sure about that. I think the "fans" do show up regardless of the opponent. The other folks are not fans. We need more fans.

Would it make it easier? Maybe. But this is stuff that should have been ironed out in the preseason and certainly after game 1. The opponents didnt cause the issues. An overly complicated play book did that. The coaches might be new in their positions but this isn't shafers first day on the sideline...he should have known preseason that was too much. It's preparation.

Penn state wasn't really on the road, are playing short handed and with average talent at best...and their coach isn't really a college hc vet. We were just terrible. If you can't get up for a roadie in game 2 you might as well pack it in.

Hard to recruit when you have (had?) BAD facilities, no fan support and no tradition that is built on. Lets not blame a schedule and heap it all on the fans. Do you buy a bad, poorly rated product in life? Look on amazon all the best sellers are highly rated products. This is how life works

You don't think that what the opposing coaches were doing didn't vastly contribute to the confusion we saw? Pen st has much more then average talent and depth isn't a factor in game one as we saw. Obrien is highly regarded as a top notch coach. 3 To 1 pen st to SU fan ratio 5 hrs away from Syracuse is a road game. The offense couldn't hear a thing.

When this was scheduled a few years ago who expected Northwestern to be good? They usually stink.

I've seen people have a pair of kings and split them

Hard to get fan support in a front runner town when we start the year off 0 and 2 every season. Without fan support its hard to get money for facilities.

Are you kidding me with this crap, NW has been consistently better than Syracuse since at least 2004.

This is it. Even in good years like 1998 we scheduled some powerhouse and destroy the expectations for the season before it starts. That the new athletic department has continued this practice while also moving these games from the Dome is unconscionably moronic.

PENN ST. was totally beatable had we played well. NORTHWESTERN was definitely going to win but frankly we played like crap and couldn't even stay close. i got no problems with the scheduling. i don't particulary like what i'm seeing on the field . and mary poppins cupcakes taste good but don't cure nothing.

Cupcakes helped cure Rutgers' program and put Virginia Polytechnic Institute on the map.
