The Doug Marrone "Changes" article from the PS is a must read

Article was very good. Told me 3 things. On specials we're tweaking some punt coverage things and banking a lot on the freshman K/O guy. On offense Nassib will run more but there will be some packages for Hunt. On defense we're gonna try to coach up the DB's and get more pressure from the DL and not blitz as much.

Some here think DM has to be this big CEO type but come on being the ST coach allows him to get to know the players strength & weaknesses and what each needs to work on early in their careers. They only can be with the players about 2 hours per day and coach seems to be putting in 15 plus hours a day.

Also being in his 4 year a lot of the CEO type jobs he is not in the learning phase but more in the maintenance phase like any job giving him more time to coach.

His biggest risk is failure with ST but it's the same as his biggest risk is losing games and not getting into bowl games every year on a consistent basis. Anyway many will argue he needs to be this generalist manager of the team but guess what that didn't work last year. He wants to get more directly involved to right the ship and I like it.

Their is an old saying - expecting a different result doing the same thing over and over is the definition of insanity.

So, Hunt will be stealing time from Nasaib. Great. Kid just wont stop. :D

I hope they're also looking for ways to make big plays on specials, with punt blocks/returns in particular. Under Marrone, we probably fair catch 90% of punts. I also can't recall a blocked punt under his regime (we have blocked FGs). IMHO, we have the explosive players to do these things.

Not a fan of the spread punt formation at all. It puts a lot of pressure on the special teams unit to read the opponent and how they line-up and react accordingly. And shifting and it can cause confusion and its an easy way to blow through timeouts on plays where you are giving up the ball up to begin with.

But on the other hand it can't be worse than what we were doing this past year on specials so might as well give it a shot

A 2 hour signing day reception (in february) takes too much time away from coaching?

Yea, that was the dumbest statement in there. I will tell you what, all the things that have happened and decisions made over the past year only tells us that the school and the program have decided the fans don't matter. That's too bad because every good program needs its fans. It's a vicious circle, the less fans come out, the less the school cares about the fans, which leads to the fans caring less, etc etc. Really stupid. So if the program fails, they can then say it is the fans fault.

I would say that a 2hr signing day event requires a bit more time to prep if you want to actually show film and talk about recruits and answer questions.. if we end up over .500 this year and in a bowl its a fair trade off.

still think they should do something even if its wrapped around the spring game time frame..

does it really matter when it happens to most of us? we just want info and interaction

Just what are the video guys doing this time of year? Sounds like a nice student project, under guidance of video guy, as well. They know who they've offered and who they have verbals from. 90% can be done before the end of the fall semester.

Funny how Doug will also find the time this year to do his "PAID" radio show!

Marrone only has to show up. Others do that stuff.

So, DM identified this as the problem: “You can say what you want, but at the end of the day we’re just not creating enough big plays on offense,” he said. “And conversely on defense we’re giving up too many big plays. And that’s really as simple as it is.”

I don't think anyone can disagree with that conclusion. The REAL issue is identifying what was the cause of that.

And DM's answer for that is two-fold. One, he has to concentrate fully on coaching, "I have to become more involved." Clearly, he believes, right or wrong, that last year's lack of success was a largely a coaching issue.

Secondly, the schemes will be "tweaked," not changed: "A streamlined passing game, the quarterback as a passer and a runner, tweaking disguises and coverages on defense and a spread punt formation on special teams. There are other changes Marrone is contemplating, but those are the headliners."

I think that this means that the Coordinators will have less say in the overall approach next year, and schemes will reflect more of what DM believes needs to done to be successful.

Next year will define DM, IMO.

DM seems like one of those guys that whether you had some students putting all of the video together he would want to look at it all and make sure it flows the way he wants it to. He would then spend hours putting together all of the information that HE wants to talk about in the way that he likes to talk about it. So I could see how this could take up a lot of his time. I'd rather him focus on the "job" as he said and have time with his family so he can relax and clear his head.

Can be found in OE's links above...

I think the article and Marrone's observations reflect three obvious deficiencies in the team last year.

And to me it was always very simple.

We did a lousy job on KOs - we invariably gave up field position with our KO unit. For me, that may have been the most frustrating part of watching this team last year. We would score and then proceed to allow the opposing team to get the ball at its 40-45 yard line to start its drive. The USF touchdown to conclude the first half sticks out as a perfect example - we score and make it a game. We KO out of bounds, get a penalty and give the ball to the Bulls on our 45 (?) and they score in two plays. The UConn game was similar. We gave the Huskies the ball in great field position on every KO.

We had a QB who did not gather yardage with his feet. Apparently, by design, Nassib offerred no threat against defenses that were bottling up our WRs and pressuring him on passing downs.

And we tackled badly on defense - especially with quick outs and bubble screens. How many times did we bounce off players with the ball last year?

I agree that Coach Marrone is underestimating the importance of his fan interaction.

It is that interaction that builds emotional capital - and that emotional capital pays dividends when the wins don't come.

That was P's problem. When the wins became more difficult he really had no emotional capital upon which he could rely.

He put his bet strictly upon wins. And when he lost, he was exposed.

Marrone has avoided a lot of that so far.

I think he is discounting a very important part of his job.

But, I guess the losses are so painful that he is willing now to do whatever he feels he has to do in order get wins.

I hope it works.

i do not know enough about x's and o's to comment. however my biggest concern ahs been dm attitude. his sterness and apparent rigidity has had imo a negative impact on player performance and scares the hell out of the other coaches. consequently everyone is tight. he needs to lighten up big time or it will be more of the same. the team and marrone appear to have no identity, commraderie or fun.jb's teams are the opposite. just my concern

I think we also forget how important a strong fan base is for recruiting. I think its painful to have recruits visit with a half full stadium with dull fans.

Very true.

He has an obligation to help bolster attendance at the Dome.

From what someone associated with the team told me, he's found he needs to lighten up big time. And that need to change was brought to him by the players themselves. He's trying much harder to chill out and build stronger relationships with his players.
