- When we joined the ACC I had visions of us being blown out of Cameron as I’d seen happen to so many other teams. Tonight it happened. But tit didn’t happen because Duke was playing lights-out, as I had envisioned. In fact, they seemed very vulnerable until they made some late threes. Instead it happened because we couldn’t do anything to force the issue.
- After spending the day discussing whether pearl Washington or Sherman Douglas was our greatest point guard, it was quite a come-down to see this. We can’t run a fast break to save our lives any more. Matt Park described our offense as a “Keystone Cops routine”. When Jim Boeheim was asked “What did you see that caused you to take Kaleb out?” He shook his head, smiled wanly and said “Nothin’” Joseph had no points on 0 for 4 shooting and 1 assist in 17 minutes.
- You’re going to have 3 for 20 nights from outside. It’s the 16 for 42 nights inside that kill you. Michael Gbinije who was 10 for 14 in the first Duke game, was 5 for 20 tonight with four missed lay-ups, (by JB’s count). I recall two on fast breaks where he broke clean to the basket and just flipped it up- and out when he probably could have dunked it.
- Silent G’s net points this month: 17, 21, 26, 33, 23, 11, 14, 0. He was a great player for a while there.
- I had hopes Rakeem Christmas’ experience as a senior and quickness would enable him to school Jahlil Okafor. In two games, Christmas had 22 points on 8 for 23 shooting and 11 rebounds. Okafor had 36 points on 16 of 25 shooting with 27 rebounds. Next case.
- Of course it doesn’t help when your leading scorer gets off 6 shots in 30 minutes. It’ becomes worse when the other two member s of you “Big Three go 10 for 36.
- Jimmy Satalin said at one point during the game that Syracuse’s problem “is that they’ve got 2-3 guys out there Duke doesn’t have to guard”. And when we did have a guy they needed to guard, they guarded him.
- We actually wound up with fewer turnovers than Duke but I think ours hurt more as so many of them were on fast breaks. Listening to Matt Park, there were perhaps a dozen times in this game where his voice rose anticipating a Syracuse score and he had to pause and describe a player falling, a pass going off somebody’s hands, a ball falling off the rim, etc. etc.
- Christmas had five fouls but they are awfully hard to remember. There wasn’t much to remember.
- For both teams the power forwards took advantage of the attention the centers were getting to have big games. Tyler Roberson had 16 points and 9 rebounds while Justise Winslow had 23 points and 9 rebounds. The difference was that Winslow kept going the whole game while Roberson faded badly at the critical part.
- It’s been 6 months of rooting for two injured, under-manned teams. The football team wasn’t that good to begin with so they became pathetic. The basketball team was good so they’ve bene able remain competitive but against the good teams, they just don’t have the firepower they need. When we visit Cameron next year, I want to see this team locked and loaded.
