- Another sad Saturday. There’s been too many of them at SU in recent years.
- That wasn’t the #6 team in the country but they beat us the same way Villanova did, by out-hustling us for ’50-50’ balls, rebounds and on defense. We don’t have 50-50 balls. We have 20-80 balls. Tight cheeks get loose balls.
- We are 5-5 and the cumulative scores of our games in 754-754. We’ve lost to two highly ranked teams in Auburn and Villanova but we’ve also lost to Colgate who is 4-6, Virginia Commonwealth, who is 5-4 and now Georgetown, also 5-4. We are what our record says we are.
- In Jim Boeheim’s career here, he’s started 10-0 sixteen times, 9-1 eleven times, 8-2 eight times, 7-3 six times, 6-3 three times, (1996, 2014, 2017) and now 5-5 twice (2019, 2021). Four times in the last 8 years we’ve gotten off to a start no better than the 1996-97 team, which has probably been our worst team of the Boeheim era. We’ve got a bunch of new guys but we’ll have a bunch of new guys next year, too.
- We have outscored the opposition 384-327 in the first half, (+57). In the second half, it’s been 370-427, (-57). We’ve given up 100 points more in the second half than the first. The offense doesn’t lose that much, (38 ppg to 37), but the defense goes from giving up 33 ppg to 43. In the wins, it’s been 205-158 (+47) and then 210-197 (+13). In the losses it’s been 179-169 (+10) and 160-230 (-70).
- Villanova shot worse percentages than we did but got off 21 more shots. In this game Georgetown shot better than we did but we got 13 more shots off – and still lost.
- Teams have been having success with smaller line-ups our guys can’t keep up with. I’m also tired of seeing out guys running out to stop a three. Jesse Edwards last year was good at keeping his body between the ball and the basket but now he’s being more aggressive and they are going around him to score. I know we’re in a zone but JB stresses maintaining contact with the shooters. I had hoped being ‘longer’ would help our defense but it hasn’t. Our worst fears are being realized there.
- Buddy Boeheim hasn’t attempted a free throw in three games. I guess they aren’t fouling him. Even when he isn’t being ‘defended’, his shot is still badly off. He had two air balls in this game.
- Cole Swider is 11 for 35 in his last five games from 3: that’s 31%. He missed a big one at the end of this game.
- Jimmy Boeheim, after scoring 21 against Nova, got 10 on 5 for 14 shooting in this one.
- Joe Girard picked a terrible time to miss just his 3rd free in 26 attempts. He was 4 for 6 from the field in the first half and 1 for 7 in the second.
- Our bench actually played pretty well in the first half but, other than Jesse Edwards’ foul trouble which put Fran Anselem in there for a brief time, they didn’t play at all in the second half.
- Our 5-star freshman, Benny Williams, has +3NP in 131 minutes this season. Their 5 star freshman, Aminu Mohammed, has +132NP in 272 minutes, including 32 in this game.
- Now we get 1-8 Lehigh and Cornell who is 8-2 and beat Colgate. Then it’s the ACC the rest of the way. If we get to 7-5, will that be enough of a cushion to continue the streak? (And if it isn’t you can forget about any other goal we might have had.)
- Yes, we have a lot of new guys who are just learning their roles on this team. We will next year, too. And after that?
