The elephant in the room

A good 24 hrs. nonetheless for their program...first knocking off the 10th rated Gators in hoops and then winning their 5th straight bowl game...though, I agree, the particular bowls and opponent's they've conquered were really, inconsequential/nobody in particular...

Totally agree that their OOC schedule blows, and their bowl wins are minor and over mediocre teams. And yet they've won 5 straight bowls, while we've played only played in 5 bowls in 13 years. So while it's fun to taunt them over the conference thing, we better get our together fast or they will still beat us for recruits.

this was a huge game. it was so important that it is currently the 19th highest headline on the new york post sports website. i tried to watch it but i kept finding myself turning the channel and forgetting about it.

I almost never comment on the State school of New Jersey, but unfortunately I end up reading countless posts here on the subject. Yesterday when I realized they were playing I checked the board, and I was surprised no one was commenting. I thought it was a conspiracy, and I missed the memo.

Was at last years game and this years. More RU fans and they were MUCH louder. ISU fans were also better than KSU. Much better atmosphere (didnt say anything about the weather)than last year.

Why is everything always compared to RU? Even the ACC argument. I am an SU grad and I am sick that we are going to the ACC for football. I'd much rather be competing for championships in the NBE than competing with MD, BC, and Duke to not finish last in the ACC.

So you would rather stay in league of uninteresting, fairly bad teams where, come 2014, a championship will likely get you a Liberty Bowl against CUSA?

Rather than join a league of better, more interesting teams giving us more to sell to the better recruits. Which could lead to a better football team and more interesting bowl games.

Pretty defeatist attitude for an SU alum. Gotta bet money to make money. And I'm all in. Go ACC.

It's the money and the fact that the national perception of the BE is horrible, even in the year's when the BE does very well, and because of that most schools have been pursuing exit strategies since 2005 and probably since before 2003.

If Virginia loses tonight and/or WVU beats Clemson the ACC... The point being the ACC fails to meet expectations every year and is 2-11 in BCS games. Will Clemson make it 2-12 or 3-11? If the BE was 2-11 in BCS games that stat would lead every discussion about the BE.

Oops, I forgot that Virginia Tech is playing Michigan in another BCS game...how did the ACC get an at-large team into a BCS game with a 2-11 record in BCS games? It probably has something to do with money.

Having said all of that, I think Virginia might win tonight, and I think Clemson should beat WVU and Virginia Tech could beat Michigan.

Then how come your only posts are in relation to RU?

I was asking myself the same thing. Methinks we have a bit of an impostor in the house. Certainly wouldn't be the first time.

A mind boggling thought.

Rutgers averaged 43,761 fans in 2011.

Yet there were only 38,328 people at the Pinstripe Bowl.

Assuming that Iowa State brought 5,000 fans ... There were 10,000 LESS Rutgers fans for a bowl game in their own backyard.

1. We must like different types of football. Uninteresting teams?? The Big East replaced two awful offensive teams with Boise, Houston, SMU, and San Diego St. Those teams like to score points and I like that. All of those teams would have beaten SU this year (and RU for those questioning my loyalties.)

2. I will make a gentlemens bet right now that the following happens: a) Big East's new tv contract will net each school more money than the ACC schools. B) Big East keeps its automatic bid. Hypothetically who'd you rather face in a conference championship year in and year our, Boise or FSU/Miami?

3. Newsflash: winning sells.

We can agree to disagree and I know this may sound "defeatist" but I am personally concerned. The timing of this move couldn't be worse for SU football. This may set the program back another four or five years. We simply do not have the talent to compete with VT, FSU, Clemson, and even UVA (who has an abundance of young talent and a great coach). I don't like playing for 5th in the ACC as some have suggested as opposed to playing for 1st in the Big East. But again, just my opinion.

Sure, but just wait 'til they're in the Big Ten.

JUST WAIT!

So the BE is adding teams that SU can't beat, but we can beat them more than the teams we can't beat in the ACC?

OoooKkkkk.

And I will take your gentleman's bet. ;)

I'd like to get in on that too. Don't think SU had the option to stay and think the money issue is a no brainer. SDSU would not fill the dome regardless of how many points they put up. FSU might. If you're gonna lose anyway, better to lose to a Miami, VT than Houston or SMU.

Oh damn, I'm busted! Come on guys...I am living in NJ now and live and breathe football so I've taken a liking to the local team. Shoot me. I hated RU like the rest of you while on the hill. But unlike some of you, I have an open mind and am able to take my orange colored glasses off from time to time.

I have said it in previous posts that I wish SU would use RU's model in certain areas and I stand by this. Most notably recruiting. I will also say that right now the RU brand is much more exciting and while lots of it may be smoke and mirrors from Schiano, it's working. God forbid HCDM show some imagination.

So the reason my posts seem to always be in relation to RU is because I feel a connection to both. I also think it is interesting to compare SU to a regional rival.

Had a feeling that would read strange. What I was trying to say that in the short term (3-5 years) SU would be much more competitive with those NBE teams than those ACC teams. In my head i keep asking myself who (as SU) I'd rather play in a conference championship and I keep choosing Boise/Cincy/etc than FSU/VT/etc.

You're on with the bet! Haha, thanks for playing along. NBC/Comcast's deep pockets and the fact that the BIg East footprint is now national leads me to my thoughts. Will be interesting to see if ESPN gets roped into overpaying to not lose their deal.

nbc will overpay-

league will look and be to strange to survive imho-

Best case estimations of the new BE football contract that I have read have projections from $6.5 to $9.5 million/team. The ACC is currently at approx $13 million/team, before the value added renegotiations. I doubt you are going to win this bet. You might also want to ask Scooch what he does for a living.

I happen to agree w/ some of your points, particularly in relation to recruiting, but just wanted it to be honest that though you were emphasizing that you're an SU grad, your comments often aren't necessarilly coming as an SU fan. That's okay-You can obviously root for whomever you choose- let's just be honest about your rooting interest.

I am actually one of the few here w/ mixed feelings about the ACC move, but do you really believe any other team, including rutgers wouldn't do the same? Unfortunately, that's the reason they probably had to do it.

I'm sorry if I'm not the Rah Rah type, but I've bled and sweat FOR the SU program (unlike a majority here) so I feel I've earned the right to be somewhat cynical with regards to the current state of the program.

You are right, Rutgers would jump at first call, however from a talent standpoint they would be more competitive from the get go.

That was my point earlier... If you are entering the BE, you could sugarcoat the opportunities anyway you want, but no team left behind, or entering for that matter would choose the NBE over the ACC. We had to go, whether it leaves us in the football basement or not... Heck we are in the BE's football basement and have been for years.

I stand by my statement. I think you are an impostor. Have since every one of your posts is at least indirectly Rutgers related. I live in NJ also and don't find any connection to them (in fact, I still have never met a Rutgers fan).

I find it almost impossible that a supposed alum would take a liking to a conference rival just because they live in the same state. If anything, you would be more annoyed by them. I'm not buying what you're selling.

Ok great thanks for questioning my fandom again. Believe what you want pal.

If I'm reading your quote correctly, maybe I should talk to Scooch since it seems like we may be in the same industry!

The NBE is going to have the unique opportunity to have a full slate of conference games from 12-8 pm straight through with no weird start time locally. I think the new NBC sports channel will overpay to have this ability. I would guess 12-15 a school in NBE when all is said and done. What do you think Scooch?

If Syracuse didn't leave then the Big East probably doesn't add the teams they are adding. And when the BCS is only about the final game in 2014, no major bowl will want to align with that league. It would be like winning the MAC. So I'd prefer 5th in the ACC, at least there is hope. You would rather give in before trying and just say oh it will never work.

Looks like a good turnout and a 9 win season.

But yeah, we should keep proclaiming our superiority to them, that 1989 Peach Bowl trophy means a ton to high school kids.
yep
