We here a lot about how the elephants and Hippos have to grow up and learn so the big men can be the real kings of the Jungle.
Now lets talk about the real big kings the Dino-Saurs that need to grow and be the big man on campus.
Perhaps our Dino needed and did learn some things over this two week period. After all he has never been in this position as a head coach before for sure. He has always taken what he inherited and brought them to a higher level. He has not had to sustain that level before. He has not had to face diversity for any period of time. He has not had to step out of his comfort zone and look for answers to problems in his program before. He most of all has only had to go on belief without evidence to what it is to sustain a program that you are building.
Since Dino likes to talk about movie and TV quotes so much I am reminded of the old TV show Fame. Where the teacher would always say "fame costs and right here is where you start paying" He needed to learn that building a consistently good program can sometimes mean that change might be needed to elevate to another level. He needed to learn that the status quo can sometimes be detrimental and not lead to stability. He basically needed to learn that fame costs and sometimes you have to pay with changing and moving on from a friend , maybe it means that small changes to what you do everyday can make a big difference.
He is the Dino-saur in the program the big bad Rex if you will. But this year he seemed to be content to scavenge and poach rather than hunt. He maybe thought like an old dinosaur and just thought he could do the same old things over and over and be successful.
Yesterday was a different team at least for a day. Who knows if it will last lets hope so. Maybe hope springs eternal even for an old Dino-saur who stepped out of the box and made some big changes in the direction of the program by changing a top coordinator and making a big switch on his offensive line that kept his most important offensive player on his feet. Also not to be lost were the occasional sweeps and counters that freed up some running lanes.
Its to early to tell if this was a one week wonder, the game next week will be tough on the road against a team that is playing pretty good .
It could also mean the old Dinosaur who looked like he made some changes had some learning to do of his own. Maybe actually running a and building a program is much different than inheriting one and making it your own. Maybe the old dinosaur the real big dog in the jungle just started to realize that its hard to build and sustain with fancy slogans about belief and family. Sometimes building a program costs and over the last couple weeks he started paying.
