Or on Twitter at mattpark1.
The show can be heard in Syracuse on FM 99.5. It’s sometime simulcast on AM 1200 or FM 97.7. You can also get it on: http://tunein.com/radio/WGVA-1240-s29191/
I will be posting my rough transcript the night of the broadcast focusing on my questions, the team and their last and next games and then a second post the next day on other things that were discussed.
MY QUESTIONS/COMMENTS
First hour:
“Coach, there’s a joke going around that Trevor Cooney injured his back being thrown “under the bus” by Syracuse fans. Last week we were talking about Trevor Cooney’s strange trend of hitting his first shot and missing after that. His back injury could be an explanation: perhaps his back was tightening up as the game went on. How long has he been hurting and is the back the likely reason for his shooting problems?”
Second hour:
“Coach, could you go over the protocol when a player gets hit by an elbow? I don’t think Tyler Roberson has been the same player since he got hit and yet they didn’t even look at the monitor, as they have done several times in the past when Syracuse elbows hit opposing players.”
COACH BOEHEIM
(I have, in some instances, put together statements from different parts of the broadcast on the same subject)
Matt started by going over the remaining schedule: #4 Duke, #2 Virginia and a season ending trip to Raleigh to play a talented NC State team. The he apologized for spoiling Jim’s dinner. Jim said it was OK. “You want to beat ranked teams”.
He said the Notre Dame contest was “a strange game. We missed a bunch of lay-ups to start. We got the lead but then made some turnovers we haven’t made all year. We disrupted their shooters just enough. They have 4 good shooters and only one of them made a three-pointer. You wouldn’t believe such a thing could happen. We had one guy who had a really good offensive game. At Pitt everybody played well on offense and we lost. They missed a few shots they would normally make and we got out of there with a win. They were not even that close. Connaughton was the only guy who looked really comfortable. ” Normally we’d have to play great to win there and we didn’t. It’s amazing that was a 60 point game. It should have been an 80 point game.”
Matt referenced the odds for winning a game statisticians are fond of, saying that our percentage “must not have been strong” in a game where Rakeem fouls out early. JB: “We’re not a come from behind team so I played him with 4 fouls. We needed him. I gambled we could hold the lead at the end. He stayed in for 8 minutes. I didn’t think he fouled the guy for his fifth foul. BJ made a 1 and 1 we had to have and then the great finish on the dunk. We made great plays down the stretch. We struggled but Notre Dame struggled more. I’d like to see a game where everybody on the team plays well. Actually I’d like to see three games where we do that.”
Gomez later asked who had “taken control” when Rak went out. “Mike and Trevor. They are in their 4th years in college. Mike has been playing for 2 years with us and Trevor three. Vocally, they took control.
Daryl in Clay is “Your favorite Golden Domer”. He said that he’s been getting texts and e-mails from all his acquaintances needling him about the SU win. He gave Coach “Kudos for winning under the Golden Dome. The Joyce Center is tough. You really stifled that crowd. “ JB: “It was one of our best defensive games. It’s always been our Irish guys that killed Notre Dame. Gerry never lost to them, (except on 2/16/04, 72-84 in the Dome). Then Cooney. You need to recruit our Irish guys. Trevor had a great finish. We were in trouble. We don’t win without him.
I called in my first question, first making sure of the spelling of Coach’s name, (B-O-E-H-E-I-M). That got a chuckle, as did the reference to Trevor Cooney injuring his back because SAU fans kept throwing him under the bus. Regarding Cooney’s back problem, “It’s been bothering him a while. He says it’s ‘tight’. If have no explanation for his shooting. He made his two toughest shots at the end. You just don’t know. When you have a bad back, it’s better in a game to keep playing than to sit down. You give it a chance to loosen up. He’s healthy enough to play. I don’t ask. He says he’s OK. Today he made 4 in a row in practice. He hasn’t done that in a long time.”
Then he dived into the issue he had with Brent Axe, who suggested that he give Cooney a break in the minutes. “I would if I had an alternative. I pulled him out of the Notre Dame game because he took a way-out shot.(JB doesn’t like “Way Out” shot Otherwise I wouldn’t have gone away from Trevor. You need a threat in the game. Somebody stays right with him the whole game. It opens things up for Rakeem and Michael. He’s also 1-2 in the league in steals and plays very good defense. That alone is enough to keep him in the line-up.”
Later I called in my second question about the Roberson play. JB: “If a guy gets hurt I’ve never known a time when a player was injured and they didn’t check the monitor. The referees said he hit his own player. I’ve not looked at the tape by my assistants have and I know that’s not true. His head went into another guys arm. The rule is that it’s flagrant 1 or 2. 2 is intentional and the guys gets thrown out of the game. 1 is unintentional and you get two shots and the ball. If it’s just a basketball play they might not call anything but if there are stitches they call something. It probably affected him the rest of the Pitt game. He could hardly see out of his eye. It was still swollen against Notre Dame and he missed a couple of early lay-ups and never got comfortable.”
Gomez said we’ve missed a lot of lay-ups this year. JB: “Everybody misses lay-ups. Mike Krzyzewski was talking about a game they lost where they missed 9 lay-ups in the first 10 minutes. It’s part of the game but one nobody likes.”
Will BJ get more playing time now? “That’s a good guess. He started to play well vs. Boston College. Pittsburgh was his most confident game. BJ’s been shooting well in practice, looking comfortable.“
Chino Obokoh “set good screens. He got people open. He played good defense. He’s getting better.”
Dave in Minneapolis praised Rakeem Christmas and pointed out that we’ve had big men who came along slowly before like Etan Thomas and Rick Jackson. That prompted Jim to reiterate his point about how long it takes for big men. “Etan went from nowhere to a top 10 draft choice. Otis became a go-to-guy. With Arinze we would have made it to the finals and had a good chance to win the national championship.” He also praised Rak for staying for four years, which he says sets an example for young players to stay four years and get better. “He’s improved the most of any big man we’ve ever had.”
Rakeem is not a Wooden Award finalist but he’s one of the 14 finalists for the similar “Oscar Robertson Award”. “Somebody is listening. He has to be Top 15. He’s in the top 4-5 in every statistic in a tough league for big men. He’s an All-American. He’s got to be All-league with Okafor, Grant and maybe Hanlan, although his team’s in last place. Brogdon’s having a tremendous year. Quinn Cook is, too. Okafor is the #1 prospect. They just don’t make them like that anymore. ”
Tom in Mohawk wondered if JB played the “what if” game regarding Tyler Ennis and if his leaving might have been a blessing in disguise because it’s given Kaleb Joseph some early experience. “Kaleb has progressed. But Sherman Douglas and Michael Carter-Williams sat their first years and had great sophomore years. They didn’t have to look back at bad experiences I don’t know which way is better. I thought Kaleb could adjust a little better. He has to get stronger and work on his shooting. I didn’t think Tyler was going to be as good as he was. Ron Patterson was a great scorer and shooter in high school. Sometimes you don’t know based on high school. You don’t have to shoot threes. Some really good players don’t shoot 3’s and find other ways to help their teams. That’s what we need from Ron now.”
Regarding Duke, “Notre Dame beat them out there and then Duke won by 30. But Duke has had close games at home.” He was sure this was the first time we’d had a stretch of opponents iike this. We are about to play two top 5 teams in three days. Duke had a sort of scare at Virginia Tech where we’d nearly lost a 22 point lead. “We didn’t give it away. They took it. When you have 4-5 guys who can really shoot, you can upset people.” Jim said “Okafor is pretty good. He just powers it over people. Duke is really good on offense. They have so many different options.
Ken called in and said that Duke “has their hands full.” JB: “I think you’re right. These are great games, the sort you’d have in the Sweet 16 or the Final Four.”
“I think NC State is one of the most under-rated teams in the country. They are very, very talented. That game will be just as hard as Duke and Virginia.
A caller said the wins over Louisville and Notre Dame were “awesome”. JB: “I’m not going to lie about it. They were good wins to get….We don’t always play smart but our work ethic and playing hard can’t be questioned. We have short-comings and lapses but we were great at the end of those games. We closed them out extremely well and in a tough place against a top ten team.”
Rick wanted to know how we kept the momentum going into next season. JB: “Mike has shown huge improvement. BJ and Tyler are sophomores. Kaleb is getting better. That will help going into next year.” What has been his biggest surprise this year? “I usually don’t evaluate a team until the season is over. Rakeem made a huge improvement. Losing Chris was a big blow. The lack of consistency at point guard. We’ve gone from real good to really different, (from real good0. We’ve won 2 games from Top 20 teams and should have had a couple more. We had Villanova beat and there were a couple of others we could have won. Our play has gotten better. Our toughest games are still ahead of us. We just want to show people that this is a pretty good team. Anybody takes pride in what they do, even people who work at radio stations. Teachers take pride in what they do. Nobody knows about it. Not going to a tournament shouldn’t effect your pride. It’s awful to not care.”
Rick asked how many games we would have won without Rak. “Not 10. The Gerry line may have been an exaggeration. But this isn’t.”
