Last year aside offense hasn’t been the issue under Babers. I expect they get to at least 5000 yds in 12 games and should average around 30pts.

if they are going to get to a 13th game the defense has to be better. It has generally been awful under Babers. You can blame the uptempo offense in part but a consistent theme is can’t stop the run, can’t get off the field on 3rd.

You can’t win giving up the yards they do game in and game out. That gets better, this team will go to a bowl.

Certainly the defense needs some improvement, but I saw a defense that was worn down both mentally and physically , in part do to 0 production from the Offense.

you can point to about 4-5 games last year the D did more then enough to win the games,, even games like liberty had the offense done anything we are up 2 scores. a better job on offense and you can see how we start 5-0 and maybe then bc/nc st which were also winnable happen? who knows.

Yeah I don’t think the defense was so much the problem. For all the young players that played on defense last year I would actually say it was a positive. They were good for the majority of games but just got worn down toward the end of games because our offense was constantly 3 and out or short drives so our defense was out their for significant amounts of time. I’ll even go on to say that if our defense played like it did last year and our offense is even AVERAGE we win around 7 games this year

Do you think the Offense is going to be as bad as it was last year or within the norm established the four years prior to that?

if you think last year then there is no point in doing anything but picking the next coach.

I think the offense will be better, and the defense may be slightly better, but will look significantly better because the offense will be helping them a whole lot more.

I'm less worried about the defense, and much more worried about the offense getting off to slow starts and having too many empty possessions that take hardly any time off the clock.

I do not think that but I was referring to last year. Your post does not have your assumption that the O will be better, but yea , they couldn’t possibly be much worse. I expect the Offense to be improved.

the d also didn't really use most of what it can because it was new to them. hopefully a yr later they can build on it

I think the Offense will be dramatically improved. Of course when you’re starting from bottom, there is no place to go but up. I expect the Defense to be largely what we saw last year, namely effective for long stretches. My hope is they don’t wear down over four quarters.

The real area of interest to me is special teams. We’ve had solid play in coverage and kicking/punting of late, but little in the way of anything dramatic. I’m hoping we can introduce some game-changing efforts in the return game. We really need offensive field position this year. Got to get this unit contributing to the success of the team this year.

We’ll know after the first game if the offense is better. If SU can’t blow Ohio off the line of scrimmage and rush for over 200 yards, it may be a long year.
I think we need a complete offensive performance. We need to run the ball, for sure, but we need to pass it too.

Usually in these early season non P-5 games if we can't run or pass it doesn't bode well for the rest of the season.

This makes sense in theory but the data says that on average the first half defense has not been much better than the second half defense (when they were supposed to be worn out).

The assumption is in the first two sentences

We were pretty "young" on "D" last year. On top of that a new system that probably had to be kept
very "vanilla". Time of possession had to be a bit one-sided as well.
One question mark is punting. Hofrichter and Cooney have us spoiled...

Offense hasn’t been an issue? Since when?

edit: I just finished reading the rest of your post. 5000k yards and 30 points. What? I’ll have some of whatever he’s smoking, please and thank you!

coaches even said it was after the liberty game before they settled down a bit. that game was lost on just a couple scheme issues that they stop using because of it. then they got worn out and lost a few more players later in the year.

To me the key is if our offense can sustain drives. Our defense can show really well early but if our offense continues with 3 and outs even the most stout defense will go down. Quick scores great. 6 to 12 play drives that result in scores or punts also good. 3 and outs are defense killers. Seems obvious but the offense has to help our defense besides points...move the chains so our defense can get their wind between possessions. The team has not done that exceptionally well in recent years. I think our offense can do it better this year. I think our run game will help much more this year.

AND - we need to do something with the ball when the D gives us great field position after a turnover.
This too. 2019 and 2020 vs Clemson we couldn’t take advantage of anything the D gave us until it was too late

We've been very fortunate with turnovers these past few years. This scheme is more aggressive than Ward's but I worry what happens if the turnovers dry up

Our offense was capable when Dungey was the QB. It has mostly stunk otherwise.

Frankly, I have more confidence in our defense at this point.
