Curious why people think he's a good choice? Don't know much about him at all but I see his coaching record and Iowa consistently is a team that flames out.

I think you have to look at Iowa State's history before he got there. He's really the first coach to have winning seasons pretty consistently. Not an easy job to compete with Iowa with in-state recruits and the rest of the Big 12 and Big 10 teams for area recruits.

I think he could do quite well with Penn State's resources.

Not surprised, Campbell had to realize he had Penn State over the barrel and leveraged that for a little extra money ($10MM/yr isn’t outlandish but $8MM/yr would have been more what I would have expected) and 1-2 extra years.

If you want to win ugly, score 19 points a game and finish 8-4, Matt Campbell is your guy. He can coach and he's a blue collar guy which will probably play well with their base but I thought the point of taking the $70M hit firing Franklin was to win a national championship by bringing in your Urban Meyer equivalent mercenary HC. I'm not sure this guy is better than Franklin. Franklin seems to be building some real momentum at VT.
