The Penn St Dumpster Fire Thread

Is Penn St going to hire a new head coach tomorrow? What’s the timeline here? Generally curious. Kind of feel like they would wait until the season gets closer to the end. But I guess you never know in today’s world.

It’s not that I don’t think Fran won’t take a bigger job, I just can’t see him being PSU’s top 5 but again I guess you just never know
He is most likely going to be 3-5 in a couple weeks , Wonder how well that would go over in demented valley.

I’m surprised Brian Kelly’s name hasn’t come up, he’s really not very well liked at LSU and if he doesn’t make the playoff I could see him trying to get out. He’s such a horrible fit at LSU.

This is what's crazy to me about the firing. Going to be hard to replace Franklins success. 6 ten win seasons. 4 eleven win seasons and last years 13-3 playoff run. 104-45

Sometimes it time to part ways but good luck finding a guy who's going to win more. Since 2022
11-2 rose
10-3 peach
13-3 playoff
3-3

How patient will they be? Couldn't happen to a better program.

VaTech should hire Franklin.

Have you seen his results against top 10 teams? His record against Ohio St and Michigan?

He went out and spent money on players with NIL that didnt fully pan out. For example, Trebor Pena who has a whopping 202 yards and was paid close to 2 million.

Just to give an example, if he was on our team he would be below Nixon for receiving yards with that number.

This was a slow burn to a firing, but when they went out and lost to a 0-4 UCLA team who fired its coach and then a bottomfeeder b10 team in Northwestern, in a season where Penn St has one of the easiest schedules in college football and was expected to run the table and win a Natty...youre going to be fired.

I don't understand why coaches subject themselves to that type of pressure cooker program. You look at the Syracuse's and Iowa States of the world and these programs will pay you 30-40 million over 6-8 years just to be respectable and stay out of trouble. You can also see your kids grow up in the same school district.

I get the carrot of winning the big one, as a coach you want the opportunity, but as a profession you're going to still make a lot of money with half the stress and bs. Fran, and Campbell, Lea, Cignetti etc have it made.

I don't disagree that it might have been time to part ways, but coming off a playoff and the last 4 years? Who cares what the record is against the top 10. What matters is getting in the playoff which he did. So cool, it'll be funny if a guy like Rule can beat Ohio State and then lose to Michigan State. They'll love his 8-4 seasons as long as he's good against the top 10. Franklin rarely if ever had a w the ff loss.

Yeah I mean Syracuse did go big in the spring portal which appeared very necessary, but national perception was that we would be in rebuild and development mode this season. The additions felt like we had freed up money from some of the portal entries and adding experience to positions where the new guys weren’t going to be ready quick enough. It should’ve been a minor red flag that Penn State that was deemed national title favorites prior to the Spring Portal still felt the need to make major additions themselves. Maybe they did because they had the money to do so, but perhaps some analysts should’ve sounded some alarm bells then.

Because you can leave for more money and still go back when they fire you.

Dan Mullen case in point, got paid to leave Florida made a fortune took some time off, went to UNLV and could probably leave for elsewhere whenever he wants. Look at Norvell? guy will be the coach at UL-Lafayette in a couple years making 1 mil a year with 100 mil in his pocket. Game over

I get that, but it's where I differ. When I'm already making millions to make a few more million a year, with the trade off being that I uproot my family and enter an inferno of stress it's just not worth it to me. We've made those same decisions in our lives with common folk salaries. Wasn't worth switching schools on my kids.

Getting to the playoff is what matters to us.

Winning a national championship and being consistently in the Top 5 is what matters to them and winning b10 championships.

If you are consistently losing to Michigan and Ohio St every season you are not winning B10 championships and probably not nattys either.

Yeah I listened to there ADs press conference. Like another poster said, feel pretty good that Wildhack is the AD. I’m sure Penn State could offer the world to whoever they offer the job, but not sure that Kraft is a boss I would want to work for if I have comparable options.
To me, Penn State's AD gives "flunky high school gym teacher" vibes. Not impressed.

Hahahahaha. They would need to offer him like a billion dollars to consider making that move.

Penn State: "We need a billion dollars."

B1G office: Another billion? Well, if you put names on the jerseys, with a McDonald's yellow arch "M" in place of every regular M... we can probably get you about $500M over 12 years. Also, Johnson & Johnson will give you $300M if you always have at least two Johnsons on the roster, $300M more if one of them is a quarterback. Also, Aztec, Inc. will give you $200M if your home pregame ceremony includes ripping the heart out of one living lucky...err... unlucky fan. Would that help?

Penn State: Thank you! That is why we joined you guys! Thanks again for Rutgers!

Which is one reason no one should worry about Fran here. He's not won anything. Pedo is not going to take a flyer on an unproven coach.

He's the type of coach you can sell as well. Young offensive mind who already took ASU to the playoff. He's going to run the offense, keep Knowles put a couple east coast recruiters together ( I know a DC who really should just be a D line coach/ recruiter that went to PSU) and they should be off and running

Personally, I don't think Fran has done enough yet to warrant a serious look at a job like PSU. Fran has to show something here coming in and weather the storm as well. Losses are one thing, embarrassing blowouts are another. Everybody knows he can recruit but can he actually coach and get rid of poor coordinators when need be? We shall see

How would they sell their fanbase that they are taking Fran over Diaz when Diaz just went on the road and beat Fran 38-3?

Also Penn State fans will care about How they win and not just that they win. They won't stand for these slow starts we have the majority of the time. They will complain more about being down 3 scores to Miami, then being happy about just beating Miami.

Also they are used to a strong running game and strong D, which hasn't been the case here at SU. That is part of their identity.

Right or wrong, IMO they will see Fran as Franklin 2.0

I agree with you here for sure from a personal level. but the whole career path as a big time football coach is just so different. 9 out of 10 of them want to cash in while the iron is hot because eventually they all get fired.

I think the #1 and #2 guys in this scenario right now are Clark Lea and Kenny Dillingham who both are coaching at their alma mater. One I think never leaves in Lea and the other I think will be a Big 10 or SEC coach next year. You can tell they are both very different people. Lea moved around a few times and seems to have a better perspective. Dillingham always seems to be asking for more $ etc etc. But hey you never know.

On the other side though, very few candidates they would hire, you will have 100% unity within the fan base. Also, you don’t really need to ‘sell’ it to their fans. There fans will still sell out Beaver Stadium on the regular and travel to games. Whoever they choose will have to start winning big games by season 2. My guess is at that point if that isn’t happening you will be seeing a new AD and new head coach.

Although the PSU fan base is a huge cult, I don't think any new hire is going to get close to 100% unity. Regardless of who is selected as new coach, they're going to demand they win some more games this year, e.g., Rutgers in week 14 at least.

Only 523 pages to catchup to the Rutgers dumpster fire thread. To catch up, Penn State will have to continue to be a dumpster fire. But that still may not be enough if Rutgers continues to be a dumpster fire because that thread will continue to add pages.

When you are a perennial top 10 school, you expect to win a majority of games against other top 10 schools. Anything less is underachieving.

Rutgers turns to PSU and says "Hold my beer.". No on dumpster fires like Rutgers.
