The train thing...

Was a great idea, until I watched the purdue video. :)

I love hearing ideas about creating more tradition (because, honestly, we really lack tradition considering our history). But I REALLY don't like any tradition appropriating.

I was joking about the horn being an Erie canal barge horn, but that would certainly be something only we'd have. Plus, would help with the whole New York's College Team thing. But short of building a moat around the dome, kinda hard to do. ;)
Pretty sure the stand and clap before the first basket was lifted from the Lobo Classic back in the 1970's. Bring back the Kennel Club.

I guess I just don't get it.

What the heck does a train have to do with Syracuse University or the Football Program?

I would rather bring back the TD Bell or TD Cannon and the Saltine Warrior with the express approval and participation of the Onondaga Nation.

That's what I would like to see.
THANK you!

You are correct.

Brought back from the Pit of the Lobos.

Yup

Edit: OPA beat me to it. :)

Forget the train, forget otto, forget the gladiator, there is only one true mascot: the Saltine Warrior. Bring him back. Could you imagine the reaction of the crowd at the clemson game if the warrior led the team out onto the field.

I have fond memories of the Saltine Warrior. I was a student at SU in the 50's (wow am I old) and grew up worshipping that mascot. Can't we all just face the fact that he's not coming back? Honor him as you would a deceased relative if you must but let him go.
Hell, half of our fans weren't even alive when he was laid to rest in 1978.

Can the Saltine Warrior conduct a train is my question.

Sent from my HTC6435LVW using Tapatalk 2

The Saltine Warrior can conduct a train one handed while simultaneously playing Down the Field on a harmonica whle standing on his head.

Dude is awesome.

Chief Osceola is not uniformly insulting among the Florida Seminole tribe. Controversial, yes. But the NCAA also granted FSU an exemption at one time from the firestorm that swept away the other American Indian-themed mascots and such, given the unique relationship and outreach (not all sunshine and roses, mind you) with the Seminoles.
I realize they were given a "pass" by the ncaa..that doesn't make it any less insulting.

Apparently it's ok to refer to "pale white mormons in the stands" but insulting when referencing "...indian with flaming spear". PC run a muck.
apparently you can't sense sarcasm.

Hey to burst everyones bubble, but wouldn't this just be copying Purdue? I mean I think the boilermaker train has been leading them out for a couple years now.

No. This is not copying purdue.

No...I have a very good sarcasm meter. I also have a very good hypocrisy meter which started blinking while reading your OP.

Btw, I thought the BYU reference was actually pretty funny...but as long as the Seminole Nation has no problem with the FSU mascot neither do I. For some reason, you decided it was OK to poke fun (sarcasm/insult) at "pale white Mormons" but find the FSU situation (endorsed by Seminoles) insulting. Strange.

What can i say..im white and i hate white people. Reverse racism. You got me.

your attempt at reading into my thoughts is the equivalent of Cohen trying to read what the players and coaches are thinking while they hold their blue gatorade in their hands. Understand sarcasm as well as comedy and then we shall talk.

Lame. I bet we can do better. Emphasize The Express.
exactly...i wasnt talking about a kids train from a christmas mall display..im talkin about a serious train that is capable of riding on turf but can hold multiple people ( team captains and otto )

No attempt at reading into to your thoughts...they're shallow enough for all to discern from your posts.

You felt compelled to editorialize within your OP so Java and I called you on it. Pretty simple stuff.

Purdue already does this. Skip to 1:30.

I went to the infamous Joe Fields debut game against Purdue in West Lafayette. They absolutely killed us, and everytime they scored, they blew that giant train whistle full blast, and then paraded a big drum they called 'the world's largest' around the endzone celebrating.

I was haunted by that blasting horn for years. I still occasionally wake up in a cold sweat, with the sound from the horn reverberating through my brain...

One thought: if we stick with the train whistle, we should pair it with the world's largest tuba. It is in Markneukirchen, Germany, and I think we can get it for a song. DCII can carry it.

I'm imagining hearing 50,000 plastic train whistles in the stands.

If true...then there will be many attendees blowing multiple whistles at the same time. Sad but true.

You will almost never be able to come up with an idea that isn't used by somebody, somewhere. Yes, Purdue uses it. But that doesn't mean it can't be uniquely Syracuse too. Embrace it, adapt it, make it your own. Let it evolve into a tradition.

I like the 44 Express. It would be nice to have something like that as a regular identifier for SU.

Things take time.

My thoughts exactly. Very few things are truly original. We should be able to make variations that identify it as the Elmira/Syracuse Express and use it as our own.
