- That game was like taking a shower after a swim in the ocean. The only thing really impressive was the margin of victory- we beat Chaminade by a larger margin than anyone else did and by a larger margin than we beat Daemon, St. Rose and New Hampshire. Would Colgate have beaten them by that much? (Downside within the Upside: I remember being impressed with how easily the football team beat Colgate and Western Michigan and thought it meant something about how powerful we would be this year.)

- Everybody who could play, played and virtually all of them had excellent games. Chris Bell came back from a 2 for 18 game with a 7 for 13 game, including 4 treys. Maybe as impressive is that he scored three baskets in 5 attempts inside the arc.

- Justin Taylor final scored in Hawaii. In fact, he had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. He’s a perfectly good power forward – against this type of team.

- Naheem McCloud is aways going to have been numbers than you thought he had because the box score doesn’t contain his negatives. He doesn’t miss shots, doesn’t turn the ball over and he doesn’t commit a lot of fouls. Against players half his size, he had 3 points and rebounds.

- JJ Starling was 6 for 9 from the field and missed his only three. This was a game for guys who could get by their man and JJ can sure do that. He also had 5 rebounds and 5 assists. He’s actually one of our best rebounders.

- Kyle Cuffe had a strong comeback with 13 points and 4 rebounds for +15 net points after four straight negative NP games.

- Our guards found Maliq Brown for 12 points in 15 minutes. He also had a nice follow-up. That’s his game.

- But the superstar of the game was Quadir Copeland, who was all over the court, 10 points on 5 of 6 shooting 9 rebounds, 8 assists a block and a steal for an astronomical NP of 27 in 20 minutes. The Silverswords will see him in their dreams.

- Benny Williams played. That, in itself, was an achievement. He had 6 points 2 rebounds and 2 blocks in 12 minutes.

- People think Judah Mintz is an arrogant player but he could have used this game to pad his stats but he was content to feature his teammates, taking only 3 shots in 27 minutes.

- We hit a dozen treys, shooting 40%. We were 32 for 48 inside the arc: 67%! We had 23 assists. Our ball movement and unselfishness were just exactly what we need.

- We also out-rebounded our opponent 55-30. Enjoy that because that’s not happening again.

- Hey! We’re still undefeated in Maui!

4-2 with 25+ to go…

LET’S GO ORANGE!

Net Points

This year I’m going to make things a bit easier on myself and just list the net points in each game after the Upside. Once a month I’ll do a deeper dive into the numbers rather than doing a “Net Points, etc.” post after every game. ‘Net’ points is the positives (points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks) minus the negatives, (missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and fouls committed).

Quadir Copeland 27NP in 20 minutes – a remarkable total for half a game.
Naheem McLeod 20NP in 21 minutes
JJ Starling 17NP in 31 minutes
Kyle Cuffe 15NP in 19 minutes
Justin Taylor 15NP in 28 minutes
Chris Bell 14NP in 19 minutes
Maliq Brown 14NP in 15 minutes.
Judah Mintz 8NP in 27 minutes
Benny Williams 6NP in 12 minutes
Peter Carey 0NP in 4 minutes

Recruited players who did not play: Mounir Hima, William Patterson, Chance Westry

Judah feeding his teammates might be the most important part of our having success. He could do it with an inferior team. But what about when the game is on the line, will he go Nuclear Judah (with all the good and bad that name implies)?

That question determines our season.

If they trust each other and play unselfishly, we could be very good. It's all about the quality of shots we create for each other. They need easy shots to be a good team.

On defense, they have to cover for each other. That part is still a work in progress. This might sound too Bill Walton-ish, but they need to trust each other, share responsibility on defense and the boards, and share the ball on offense.

Yeah, but I think you were actually right. Our football team was much better early in the season. After injuries and getting pounded by unc, clemson, and fsu, we regressed on all levels.

If Justin can get open more and make some 3's, he would be the complete player. Lack of scoring is hurting.

I don't understand why some on this board are so down on Naheem. I think he does some good things out there, particularly his shot blocking.

Cuffe may turn out to be a key player for us. I like what he does.

Yep, more of the same from Maliq. Wish he had an outside shot, because everything else he does is so solid. He's one guy you just know is going to come out and play his game.

I really like Cope but he's a wild card. Last night he was great! The night before last a liability. The only thing I didn't like from him last night was when he was starting to feel it, he went for an unnecessarily showy pass that led to a turnover. I guess that's just Cope. Still love the kid. I also love that he's down low challenging the big guys to rebounds and getting many of them!
- Benny Williams played. That, in itself, was an achievement. He had 6 points 2 rebounds and 2 blocks in 12 minutes.
Hmmm... not sure I understand what's up with Benny. Of course we can survive without him, but I hope we don't have to because he really is a talent and important piece to a successful year (in my opinion).
- People think Judah Mintz is an arrogant player but he could have used this game to pad his stats but he was content to feature his teammates, taking only 3 shots in 27 minutes.
I think he's clearly a selfish player - that's hard to argue against. As for padding his stats... I don't know about that. He wasn't exactly lighting things up. I love Judah's game but just wish he would involve others more. Maybe that will come (like it did last year).

I love the point-by-point approach. It tells me you actually read the whole thing.

Great recognition to Nicknack for a thorough reply. Just don't count yourself short on how many others "actually read the whole thing". I would be surprised if even a few folks skipped by your post game comments. Keep up your excellent post game analysis. Many of us look forward to your posts and enjoy your insight.

we dont need to make a ton of 3s but we have to make some jump shots to score. When they go in the game gets easier and it also hides our lack of attacking the glass flaw.
