- Well, we finally played a really team and proved to be better than they were. The team showed the ability to hang with a nationally ranked team for 40 minutes and make the plays needed to win the game. Now let’s find the “killer instinct” to put away the teams we are supposed to beat easily and we’ll have smiles on our faces.
- Tyler Lydon is becoming a star, taking on those Connecticut big guys and pulling down 12 rebounds and scoring 16 points. What’s more, everything he does seems to come just when we need it to happen. It won’t be the last time he’s the guy being interviewed at the end of the game.
- But the greatest strength of the team is still the senior backcourt of Michael Gbinje and Trevor Cooney. Those guys have excellent size, all-around skills and all that experience that will be tough for other teams to match up against. How is this for a stat line: G-man had 17 points, 2 rebounds, 7 assists and 6 steals. Imagine a triple-double with points, assists and steals?
- Trevor also had 17 points. He ahd only one other positive stat: 2 assists and I don’t know what he was doing on that last possession. But he was 7 for 8 from the line in a foul plagued game. We went to the line 39 times to 21 for the Huskies, which I take to mean that we were the more effective team driving to the basket- again, that’s the senior guards. The Huskies can relate- they won those last two national titles from the backcourt.
- Tyler Roberson struggled from the line: 6 for 13. But he pulled down 9 rebounds, had 3 assists, 2 blocks and a steal. He’s the guy that made up for Cooney’s brain-fart by pulling down his wildly missed half-court shot to seal the deal.
- Mal Richardson kept up the bad half-good half trend on an individual basis. In the first half he was 1 for 4 from the field with 2 turnovers. In the second half he was 3 for 5 and they were all big shots. He wound up with 14 points and 6 rebounds in what appeared to be a poor game. Keep in mind this a freshman and we are already used to him playing at a high level.
- Speaking of playing at a high level, this game was basketball like it oughta be- top athletes going 90 feet up and down the court, setting up shots and making them, going for steals and above the rim for rebounds. Not 250 pounders wrestling for the ball in the paint. This was the basketball I feel in love with . I hope it’s a sign that the new rules and emphasis on controlling rough play is paying dividends. Yes, there were a lot of fouls called but didn’t prevent the game from being a pleasure to watch.
- My brother sent me an E-mail congratulating SU on its victory over Georgetown. Anytime we can beat the Huskies and the Hoyas on the same day is a day for giving thanks!
