The Welch Thing...

So, he was able to give it his "all, 100 percent" up until after the incompletion in the EZ, and had to come out because he was "bruised up"?

According to the radio, DeVito stiffened up and couldn't run. Which might be a problem if you want to call an RPO in the red zone.

The question I have is, if DeVito graduates from whichever FCS he plays for next year, is he still eligible to come back to P5 program for his 4the year?

You mean the runs up the middle that we were averaging 30 ypc on? Those runs? We just gained over 1000 yards in our last 2 games...I think we can simmer the “fire the whole offense” for a minute.
With Moe Neal. Moe Neal’s a different player. The forced red zone runs up the middle from 5+ yards out have rarely worked with Howard or Elmore.

Geez, it’s possible to (a) accept that he was banged up, *and* (b) critique Dino for making the switch at that moment, with that play call.

Some times people seem intent on turning every discussion into some weird, binary debate. Let’s walk and chew gum at the same time.

I accept he was banged up. But I still think a banged up TD gives us a better chance at scoring/winning than a 100% Welch.

The playcalling decisions just compounded this one.

I tend to agree. Pulling him in that spot was bizarre, even if he was ailing. Why did he even start the series and play 3 downs if he was that hurt? If the staff can’t properly judge his ability to play in the, what, 1 1/2 quarters after he was initially hurt, then questions really do need to be asked.

I think they hoped that Welch could run it in for a TD and make it a one score game. He would have had the TD if Jackson hadn't caused the penalty.

Welch came in long before that though. He threw that hideous duck on 4th down.

I get that part. I really don't have an issue with him being in at the 3 in a Jumbo package.

What I don't get is once the ball started getting backed up why he was still in there. The guy is just as likely to one hop a pass 3 feet in front of a receiver as he is to complete 1.

If Tommy couldn't play who else do they put in? I know you understand the lack of depth at QB. It's a huge problem.

Tommy at some marginal level is better than Welch in that situation.

This is why major league managers have taken to using their #1-#3 starters in relief during playoff games. Often times those starters, even working on short rest, are more effective than middle relievers. One doesn’t need to be 100% to be better than an alternative.

While some of this criticism is fair, most are missing the forest for the trees. I don't care what decision Dino made with DeVito and Welsh, that's not why we lost. We gave up over 600 yards on defense AGAIN. We gave up 50+ plus points AGAIN. While the offense is mediocre, the defense is EPICALLY BAD AGAIN. That is why we are loosing and loosing badly. Our defense has rewritten the record book in a bad way the last several years. While all aspects of the Football Program need to be addressed in the off season, defense needs to be front and center.

Pretty sure that is JB's philosophy also. A tired starter at 80% is still better than the reserve

I think it’s pretty fair that we’ll more than likely be shopping for a DC in the offseason (or already). That’s probably why you see the lack of discussion here.

I have absolutely nothing other than personal experience to support this but I think that TD was pulled based on two things in DBs head at the moment.

The first was that he wasn’t 100% physically. But maybe more important was that DB just didn’t trust TD’s decision making.

This might be a momentary thing or it might be that DB has made up his mind that under pressure TD can’t be trusted to do the right thing.
