this season unless the wheels totally come off and we are a joke. You have to let a coach bring his kids in and see what he can do. Add in if we can land washington and a couple of his friends. As I have said before, Coach Mac was 2-9 in his second year. Plenty of sack mac fans on this board and in the area. Not to mention Parcells and Walsh at the NFL level. Throw in Bill B.. Sometimes it takes time.

Only way he should be fired is if we win fewer games than we did last year. Transition with the offense, only his third season so he's not really working with his own recruits yet, etc. I always hate firing a coach before he's had four years, personally. At the college level, that's the timeframe every head coach should get, because by then there's no excuse. They've got their recruits, they've got their system, and if at that point they can't win, well, sayonara.

I agree, and to add to that, you can't have your bowl-winning QB go down for the season and expect to be successful. Without injuries, there's a great chance at another bowl game this year, and I would've expected one last year, too.

Get yer popcorn ready.
I knew that when I posted it. But to fire a coach in his 3rd year would make us a national joke. SS made mistakes last year but I thought his first year was good.

He gets a lot of slack because of the injuries on offense last year but many of the core issues, scoring, red zone efficiency, 3rd down, really bad turnovers, were there from the beginning.

The offense was in some measures sub-Grobian, which is hard to believe.

They scored 18 offensive TD's for the season.

That's ridiculous.

Another year of that would be cause for heads to roll.

If (or when if you believe the smoke) the AD is fired, a new guy will come in. At that point the clock starts for SS. He'll get zero benefit of the doubt from a new AD who will want to put his imprint on the department. If SS can get this ship back to the 6 win plateau he'll have a hard time canning him. Anything under 500 and i'd say it's very 50/50 at best for SS

Wait, I've missed it - is there really buzz that Doc Gross may be headed out the door? I assume it's largely due to the bloated athletics budget?

everyone is so scared of being wrong about canning a coach

but all those teams that held on to a coach too long are so forgettable

there are a million bad teams in college football, who can remember all the teams that should've fired a guy last year

i'm with go, he and lester have one shot to fix the offense.

I think how Shafer is doing on the recruiting trail should be factored in. If we have a loaded class headlined by Washington, and some friends , then we bring him back for a 4th year regardless. If we're struggling in recruiting, and have another 3, or 4 win season, then a change should be made. At this point we should be improving. We are going to have a veteran offense, led by a 3 year starter at qb, and a experienced core on the offensive line.

I have had 2015 pegged as our breakout year. After last year there has been some doubt setting in, but I believe we still have the talent to win 7 or 8.

Either way I don't think it's as cut and dry to say Shafer definitely will, or will not be back depending on win total.

Iv been one of his biggest critics as most of you I'm sure know. And iv always been under the impression that college coaches should get time to implement there system and their players. But some of the things this year were so inferioating. Iv had time to digest and cool down and am back to square 1. Unless this year is a disaster he needs another year, but I do have my doubts.

SS will have an opportunity right out of the blocks to put a signature win on the board vs LSU. A team like that coming north, out of conference, I have to think could be prime for the upset based on history. Of course we probably get waxed 40-3 but that would be one to get SS serious momentum heading into ACC play and for 2016 as well.

I think he creates his own buzz about it since he frequently mentions it when he posts.

We should have 3 wins in the bank next year.
Rhode Island, Central Michigan, Wake Forest
If he can't get more 3 more wins out of @South Florida, @NC State, @Virginia, @Louisville, Boston College, Pitt Shafer should be gone.
Unless he is absolutely killing it on the recruiting trail.

I don't care if Bill Walsh, Parcells, Belichick or coach Mac struggled early this is 2015 there was no money in the sport like there is today. Sorry SS last year put one of the worst offenses ever on the field. We need wins not progress in year 4.

Well, in fairness, it's only year 3.

Its a moot point. We will win 8 games this year and show last year was just a blip on the screen brought about by injuries and a horrible OC who is now gone.

Creating the post is like asking the question "Which of your kids would you save if you could only save one?" Pondering the answer is in itself injurious to one's psyche and unnecessarily so. If we get to that point, suffer the pondering then. No need or benefit to doing that now and nothing good can come of it.

76 out of 128(60%)Division 1 teams go bowling each year. If Syracuse which plays in a P5 conference and the program wasn't in total rebuild mode can't be in the top 60% two years in a row and don't have a respectable offense by year 3 SS has to be replaced unless the recruiting class is really good.

I think the type of hit a coaching change inflicts depends on the school. With SU right now, a head coach change kills recruiting...again. Look at the change from G-Rob to Marrone and from Marrone to Shafer. It's starting over. Being a lackluster program makes it hard enough to recruit but when you add uncertainty and new coaches starting from scratch, it really kills...and the talent isn't there to rebound right away because it takes good recruiting to improve the base talent.

On the other side, a team like Michigan would take less of a hit. Kids want to go there regardless of the coach. Talent already exists and a coach can actually make a big difference at first just coaching the existing talent differently.

That's not to say coaches should not be fired... but I don't think you can look solely at W-L to determine it.

If you make the right hire, and everything is handled correctly, the hit doesn't have to be that bad. Just look at how Pitt closed when Narduzzi took over. I think most would agree that Pitt is a peer program, and they closed the class with 3 highly regarded prospects. You just can't go the Wisconsin route, and BS the kids. They aren't as stupid as some of these coaches think they are.

Hopefully we don't have to worry about this next season, but it shouldn't be a reason not to make a move.

This is exactly what Shafer needs. Going into year 3 he is still looking for that signature win. Who is his best win right? Boston College? Minnesota? That's not going to cut it, he needs a Louisville, WVU type of win Marrone was able to hang his hat on. He should have a chance this year. In early projections FSU, Clemson, and LSU aren't supposed to be as strong as they have been the past few years. Even a 2nd tier win like Louisville, or UVA will be something. Mainly I want to see the staff out scheme, or out game plan someone that we aren't supposed to beat.

It's year 3

Marrone had 21 wins in his last 3 years
Shafer has 10 wins going into year 3 he needs to be at 16 by the end of the year.
Marrone left a team with solid depth on defense and a good OL. Obvious he didn't leave an NFL QB but this team wasn't in total rebuild mode.

Bowl season or SS better have a damn good recruiting class or we should the new AD makes a move.
