Jesse had the looks of one for the first half of the season, but I have no idea what has happened to him. He no longer elevates like he did on the glass and certainly not on his post moves. His footing was always a bit off, but now it is horrid.

And Judah… If you were not told that he is supposed to be an NBA prospect, how could you ever pick him out? He is ok in transition. Not sure what else he is good at. Maybe we have to hope he stays and we bring in a pg he can play along?

We are never going to reach the top of the league again, or the top 25 without a pro type player. Maybe not even an NBA guy, but a Fair, ROC, Silent G type etc. We have nothing close. 12-7 seems about right…

Best freshman class ever though, right? based on quantity but not quite quality.

Regarding Jesse, at times he looked awkward when away from the basket. I think he lacks lower body strength in his base to hold his position in the paint and finish through contact.

Judah is still not a floor general and knowing how to play under control and make his teammates better. We cant move him off PG because he cant shoot to be a SG.

I feel like for years now we have had AAAA type players, nice players but just not good enough for the majors.

I agree on Judah - nice player, will get better but right now he really isn't good at anything against real competition. I was thinking last night what would our record be this year with Tyler Ennis as a frosh running the point.

Judah could be but he’s got to get a better mid and long range shot. He also needs a better handle. He is borderline out of control driving. That’s why he’s always on the ground and the refs aren’t giving him calls. All stuff that can be worked on.

Honestly, 1 loss. Illinois wasn’t even good. Team and coach quit. UVA always a hard game. I believe that was our first loss Ennis’ year…

But he needs sooooo much work. He dribbles so high (and loose) and seems to go more laterally and backwards than to the basket. He came in as a mid-range specialist. Where has that part of his game gone?

Of course there aren’t any NBA players on this roster. If there were , they’d be ineligible anyway. You can’t play college ball once you’re a pro

Judah can make the league. And we should hope he does, it helps the program the more guys in the league we have.

He can beat guys 1 on 1. He needs to figure out help D and subsequent decisions in those situations and he needs to be a bit stronger because he can get to the rim, but he has to get better at finishing. His shooting will come around when he gets to the NBA, not at Syracuse (and that's not a knock - it's the way it is). He needs to focus on lifting the team and not getting into these imagined 1x1 match ups.

Benny has the pre req athleticism, but he would really have to put it all together at some point before his career is done to get drafted. But he's clearly someone they'll keep an eye on.

Maliq in a long shot if he fills out and keeps growing his production could get a look.

Bell and JT are shooters, so if either of them balled out to be like 42% from three on volume, maybe?

All our guys can play pro somewhere if they want, just keep that in mind. The NBA isn't the only league.

BTW, I'm not disagreeing with the premise if your premise is "we need better talent". I'm with you. But I also don't want to dismiss the inherent talent/potential talent we have.

I don't get it, Judah Mintz has been what... Freshman of the week in the ACC 3 or 4 times?! What do people expect from this kid, it's like they expect a seasoned NBA vet on his 2nd contract or something. Sheesh.

I agree with your assessment.
The NBA also has role players and a bench. Not everyone needs to be a 25ppg scorer.
It’s way more spread out and not much defense is played. A guy like Mintz would be a lot better in the NBA than in college. Brown could definitely carve out a role as a rebounder/defender. Edwards a bench rim protector.

It’s my opinion that Judah shows enough long term potential that some NBA team will draft him and then stash him in the G league for a couple years.

Myth
Agreed - the D in the league is good and I am not in the opinion yet that Judah could beat the other guards in the league off the dribble. Also at this point he is useless playing off the ball because he can't shoot. He will earn money playing basketball but he is a long way from contributing to an NBA team.

Myth
Proof is in the numbers

Points per game is going way up. Free throws are going way down. Personal fouls are going down. Blocks and steals are going down. All the former NBA players will tell you that you can’t play defense in todays league.
You can’t play physical at all. If a team is scoring 150 pts in a regulation game you will not tell me that defense was played.

Believe it not, Bell has the best chance. An athletic 2 once he fills out.

I think there is more to it than that. In the 60's teams averaged almost 120 a game and the former players you refer to were probably guys who played in the Lakers showtime era where teams averaged close to 110 a game which is what last year's average was (I think). What is this year's average 112, 113? Skill level on the offense side, number of shots getting thrown up, etc...personally I go by eye test and in my view the D at the NBA level far surpasses what you see in most college games.

Syracuse fans are terrible at projecting who is and isn't an NBA player.
Quoted for emphasis.

With the exception of a consistent jump shot, Judah has the tools to play professionally. He's quick, his handle is tight (could be better), he's athletic and finishes well at the rim.

Is the defense better in the NBA than in college? Probably because you have elite athletes at every position.
Just for context I grew up on 90’s NBA. Peak defense. Peak physicality. My favorite team is the Jazz because I loved their toughness and defense.
So when I say I see no defense in the NBA well that’s where I’m coming from. I hate to see guys score 50 on the regular or 150pt games.
