Play versus the 105 schools or whatever it is that play 1A football. I always enjoy going to Syracuse football games, tailgating and having a few beers but I have grown tired of the annual game like this but you can't win here. What good comes from a game like this? Just so boring and makes no sense to me.

Tough to get fired up for the homeowner playing CW post

Maybe they can turn them into a preseason game. Teams will draw something, FCS team can get some kind of payout, and the game doesn't count, just a chance to work things out.

50/50 on your post. It works like an exhibition game to evaluate talent. I don't want to see Wagner players being helped off the field due being worn down. Of course almost every P5 team does it so you cant blame SU.

I'd like it to be a preseason game that doesn't count toward anything the way the basketball teams can play against D2 schools in the preseason.

Give the starters a quick warm up against someone other than teammates before meaningful games start and let the young guys get a look in live competition without it counting toward redshirt time.

I would've been fine with last week being that for everyone and this week being the start of the real season. Of course, there's no way they would ever want to compete with the NFL for opening weekend.

as long as there is the 6 win rule for bowl eligibility and an FCS win counts as one of those 6 wins, don't waste your breath, these games are always going to happen. and for a program like ours which is struggling to make a bowl any year, keep the damn games.

isnt that the same thing Alabama would think about playing us.

But they'd meet their 1 Power 5 OOC requirement.

Alabama does that anyway though in their annual season opening neutral site hope crushing bludgeoning of a Power 5 team.

I'm trying to look at it like a Huge attended spring game/ practice before FSU. Much needed time to prepare but with live action.

Aren't you supposed to schedule teams like Wagner in Week 10 or 11, just before your big rivalry game, in order to give your first stringers a rest? Isn't that the SEC way?
It's the Clemson way too. Maybe if we ever get a big rivalry game, we can do that too.

I like these games as it gives (in theory) the 2nd team and beyond guys some work hitting other players from other teams.

These games are huge for the smaller programs. The $$$ they get for playing them is more than they'll get in their entire seasons in most cases.

There's a reason the NCAA limits the amount counted towards your record to 1, that's where it will stay IMO.

Bingo. It helps support fcs programs. Unless you are upset, helps with bowl eligibility. Having them early helps break in new guys/back ups... It helps both programs. FBS fans, of the home team, not so much... However, Howard's upset of UNLV last year, was awesome! I look forward to those, every year.

exactly, I get tired of this "let them eat cake" bullsh** attitude you hear from some talking heads out there, who want the P5 to stop playing these games. unless they are willing to write the fat checks that you correctly allude to, then they need to shut up.

you mean like App St vs PSU last week?

App State is FBS now. In the Sun Belt.

Temple lost to Villanova and East Carolina lost to someone I've never heard of. But those aren't exactly eye opening programs. ECU has completely fallen apart after the Ruffin McNeil firing.

I don't hate the FCS games, but I do hate that the SEC plays a bunch of them on the 3rd week of November.

It's fine the way it is now. Playing a weak FCS school can act as a bye or preseason game that counts.

No reason to risk player's health on a game that doesn't count. Syracuse players will not take the game serious, but you know damn well the FCS team will. That's just a disaster waiting to happen. Also, why pay an FCS school for nothing in return?

What should be banned is playing two FCS schools.

Agreed. It's akin to:

In tonight's MLB action, the Yankees host the Buffalo Bisons, while the Rochester Red Wings visit Citizens Bank Park to play the Phillies. In other action tonight, the Red Sox host the Mets ...

Okay, there is a fun Mets jab in there, but the idea of playing a team that is not even allowed to compete in your league, and counting the result, is utterly ridiculous at best, and farcicle at worst. It's a safety issue and a insulting for a fanbase/football fans. I don't care if you're a SU fan or Tennessee fan or Wake Forest fan. Bama either. These games are 100% h0r$e$h!T.

I don't blame SU for playing Wagner. I blame Division I athletics directors and/or presidents for allowing this practice to exist in these modern times. If the practice was disallowed next year, a school's bowl prospects would be minimally affected. Everyone would be dealing with the same issue. Schedule Kansas instead of Wagner. Or UNC Charlotte or a second MAC team. Let's face it, if your scheming/engineering/scheduling to get your school a bid to the New Mexico Bowl, you're setting your school's bar a little too low. You are embracing mediocrity and/or trying to justify keeping your crappy coach around.

And as for the potential demise of FCS football ... I don't think it is based on a worthy business model anyhow. I am tired of these games. Only a precious few care and most of those are parents of third stringers on the big boy team.

Go Orange, Beat Wagner! Yea ... cannot wait ... for next week.

You're drawing off one of the biggest FCS upsets of all time. 2007, (then FCS) Appalachian State, went into the big house, and dropped #5 Michigan State 34-32.

These are some of the biggest moments in sports, watching Davey slay Goliath. As long as it doesn't happen to us, I absolutely love it.

Think about this ... middling D-1 schools use games vs. FCS team to either rest/do nothing (Bama for instance) or earn cruddy bowl bids against similar middling programs.

How about, instead of angling for the Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl (that's real BTW), why not play a regular-season home-and-home with a fellow middling/average program?

In SU's instance, let's get a home-and-home going with Indiana, Texas Tech, Kentucky, Navy, Purdue, etc. instead of hoping to find them at Yankee Stadium the last week of December? It's maddening how stupid this all is.

Top tier FCS teams can easily drop the bottom half of the FBS. If you don't like a gimme game, then schedule a team like JMU, and hold on for dear life. Villanova is a top 25 FCS team, so they dropped Temple. Not surprising.

There are FCS teams with .500 records, or better playing FBS teams(with more than 10 such contests). The top tier is legit. I'll never have a problem with those teams playing up a level, for 1 game. While the lower level FCS are often pushovers, every once in a while, you get that Howard game, last year. The biggest point spread upset in the history of College football.

As long as it's not against your team, who doesn't like rooting for Davey?
