These Wagner type games are horrible, NCAA should do away with them

Give the FCS team a portion of the gate for the scrimmage game. Won't mean much playing some schools (cough SU, BC, Rutgers), but all the big schools get 50-100,000 for spring scrimmage. They'd draw money for a preseason game the weekend before Labor Day. I bet it wouldn't be too hard to get them on TV either.
Giving portion of the gate makes sense.

The FCS team won't want to lose all their best players to injury either. The game doesn't mean anything for them either. It's just a chance to prep for their own season.
I believe an FCS team will take any oppurtunity to beat an FBS school. Even in an exhibition game. The press alone from a win will build up momentum for their season opener.

5 years after Lemoyne beat the Cuse basketball team in an exhibition, they were still celebrating. So an FCS school would certainly love to have similar bragging rights.

I agree with all your points, and I want to add one. This game isn't necessarily a gift, in that we still have to play the game. And if we play the game, we risk injury.
While we get one win closer to bowl eligibility and increase knowledge about our team and get valuable developmental experience, it isn't without the specter of loss due to injury.
To further my point, I don't think we can gain too much optimism if we win "like we should," but we have room to feel more concerned if we don't win by 40+ points. That would not likely be of any benefit to the team or its fanbase.
I will hope for the presumed win, with some flashy play from those we expect and some of those we haven't seen much from to date, and emerge relatively unscathed heading into next week's matchup.

Like what happened with Ted Gregory against Colgate -- ugh...

Play versus the 105 schools or whatever it is that play 1A football. I always enjoy going to Syracuse football games, tailgating and having a few beers but I have grown tired of the annual game like this but you can't win here. What good comes from a game like this? Just so boring and makes no sense to me.

Tough to get fired up for the homeowner playing CW post
it would be fine if we didn't have to hear about how terrible we all are compared to all the cousin eddies with nothing better to do than watch their state college murder some hapless patsy

Agree 100%. I quite attending the 1AA scrimmages 9-10 years ago. Just cant do it

As much as I also would like these games gone yesterday, I have come to realize they're never going to go away. The D-1AA teams are too dependent on the paycheck to fund their athletic department and the D-1A teams are too dependent on the potential win to get them bowl eligible. I held out a slim hope at one time that they would change the rule to say you can only count X number of D-1AA wins in Y number of seasons (where X<Y), but that's gone now.

I apologize for bringing math into the thread.

LOVE this!

#5 Michigan goes down to the FCS
It's just the final play. ;-)

I also loved when the 1980 US Hockey team beat Russia. What can I say? I love the upset game.

No.

12 games is too much it really should be 11 if you ask me (not going to happen with scheduling and how big the conferences have become.) So you need a game like Wagner when you play a tough schedule with too many difficult games. There are no easy ACC games for us.

We need a game like Wagner with nearly everything other than Dungey looking suspect.

I have no problem with these games. I like SU playing Colgate or Cornell once in a while. I go to see SU play, not the opponent.

If everybody else is doing it, we’ve got to do it.

If it no longer counted towards bowl eligibility I wouldn’t have a problem with it at all.

I’m doing outdoors stuff tomorrow. I agree the games are boring and a waste of time.

what they should really do is add a14th regular season week permanently therefore giving each team 2 bye weeks

its still 1 of 6 dome football games

You wouldn’t be allowed to count a game against Cornell for bowl eligibility because they don’t give football scholarships.

I wouldn't have a problem with FCS playing only FCS and bolsterimg the FBS schedule. There are enough teams around, especially in our geography to fill that game witha G5 team. Temple, MAC, , ECU, UMASS, on and on. Would be interesting in the SEC especially when they schedule these team's the second to last game when all P5 teams need a blow.

Do you really think there would be much of a difference in Carrier Dome attendance if SU played an FBS team like Northern Illinois as opposed to an FCS team like Southern Illinois? I think we'd see similar crowds for those games.

Wagner is an attendance killer. The reaction i got this week at work demonstrated that the average fan, not us degenerates. Don't understand that all P5 teams play a patsy. I get it, again, UAlbany, UB, UMASS, TEMPLE , even Nova could trick the average cuse hoops fan to attend based on name value, lol.

We dont need exhibitions in cfb. We scrimmage and come out ready to play unlike the NFL, which after not playing any players in 4 pre season games; looked lost last night (the offenses)

Maybe they can turn them into a preseason game. Teams will draw something, FCS team can get some kind of payout, and the game doesn't count, just a chance to work things out.
I always thought that they’d be neat spring games that count towards the next season.

Then, schools could get a 13th game without really impacting player safety. It would also make the spring games more meaningful.

Necessary evils when you don't have preseason football. i think they should just schedule them all in week 1. Have a few marquee games but have everyone else play the lower ranked teams then. It's weird to have a scrimmage in week 2 but it is what it is. 6 wins is needed and for us, we need them however the opponent looks.

Ohio State fans are struggling with the same issue this week.

I too like rooting for Davey, as you say. But those noteworthy upsets happen once every 5-6 years (I dont count Villanova beating Temple as noteworthy ... I won't remember it in 2 weeks). It's not worth putting up with hundreds of predetermined "matchups" in between Appy State and Michigans. It's all a crock of crap.
Screw the rebellion, and Davey along with it! Long live the Empire!

That injury stuff is BS. There is always the risj of injury.
Why does it matter when your guy gets hurt?
