This SI Oklahoma State article is crazy

Whitlock is barking up the wrong tree. This series was done by 5 people and overseen by a few others. One person isn't going to do all 5 parts of the investigation.

If you're going to break this type of story that you know is going to generate a great deal of emotion; then you have to strongly consider whether one of your cohorts has a history and reputation of making things up and using unprofessional tactics and methods to create a story.

Choosing to partner up with someone like Thayer Evans on this type of story was stupid.

Any player that willingly attaches their name to recieving improper benefits is a moron. IRS on line one!

This gives OU the perfect chance to break for the B1G without taking this renegade program with them though.

IO that is one thing I've always wondered about, why isn't the IRS going after these benefits after they have already been proven?

I'm not going to throw stones at OSU because there are so many schools cheating it's not even funny. I look forward to seeing Miles skate out of this which I know he will.

Part Two Academics

IO, brings up a very interesting point one of the writers Thayer Evans is an OU alum, and he may be helping his alma mater be able to ditch its little brother Oklahoma State to join greener pastures B1G or SEC.

OU would be foolish not to leave and to be honest if they get Texas to go with them to the Big10, yikes that some serious huge kitty old school money.

If a kid is destitude and offered a scholie, meals, travel stipends, etc...he/she needs to be thankful he/she has a chance to get educated but also needs to budget accordingly. It is all about priorities.
The imbalanced thing about that kind of situation is that there seems to be a lot of destitute kids that show enough athletic or academic ability to get a scholarship, but financial wisdom doesn't often belong to the young or come bundled with the athletic or academic ability that got them in to school.:noidea:

I don't have a solution to that. Just observing.

Always have to dig deeper. Everyone knows this stuff transpires at a bunch of schools. So why this article about this specific school and why now? What If I told you there is no spoon?

It seems most of the financial stuff was done under Miles. Sounds like academic cheating has been on-going, and to think Southerland almost lost his eligibility over basically nothing. This whole concept of the NCAA is a joke

It's hard not to think that college athletes are cash-poor when you hear Ohio State players had to trade trinkets they were given for tattoos. High school kids have tattoos.

I read somewhere about either or both SEC and Big 12 schools having dummy churches set up so they can fund their players through that. This is big business folks along with a lot of pride for some of these fans or alumni, this in my opinion is one of the biggest reasons why Marrone left, you just can't out bid these guys for players or facilities.

Plus to say a lot of these guys are actually student athletes is comical to say the least.

Nah, factory workers make products. The players are the product.
I'm not suggesting they get paid by the colleges, I just think they should be able to make money off their likeness. I believe the courts will agree with me shortly with the OBannon case and the NCAA will have to revisit the way they sell the game.

I go to watch SU football. For the most part, I don't care who the players are. They are not the product. (Perhaps they are part of the machinery.) The product is the brand that SU developed, invested in and sustained.

You are in the minority.
When the team was 1-10 or whatever, no one went to the games.
If the players are good, more wins, more fans...They are absolutely the product.

The key words in your post are "more wins, more fans." That's really what it comes down to. No one comes to the games because Terrell Hunt is a great kid. Or because Jerome Smith is a great kid. Or because so-and-so overcame adversity. Or because Joe Blow is getting good grades. We come back every year because it's SYRACUSE football. And when Syracuse football is winning, even MORE people turn out. But it's not about the players. The fans will cheer for any miserable SOB if their team is winning.

Ok. Agree to disagree. Good players = wins.
..and to specify, by good, I mean good at football, not a good person

If SYRACUSE FOOTBALL went 0-12 for the next 3 years, the dome would be empty.
And that's not just syracuse, but pretty much any sport, any league, anywhere.

I call BS on that one. If you're a scholarship athlete the meal plan is included. How could you almost be starving?

The meal plan is not enough for these players to support themselves.

Allegedly SU used to serve beer in the dining halls when the drinking age was 18. Not sure if that is truth or urban myth. My guess is the latter. Maybe one of our more elderly posters on this board can confirm.
I worked in a dining hall (Brockway) during the fall of my freshman year.
There was no alcohol there, nor was there in my regular dining hall (Sadler).

My freshman year R.A., on the other hand, was a bartender on M. Street. Our floor (and a girls floor) received funds (dorm? SA?) for a drink mixing/tasting "educational session". A well attended event. :)

i don't think sports investigative journalism is as reliable as regular news investigative journalism

If Miami didnt get the death penalty for all the evidence that came out against them last year. Then no matter how bad this looks for OSU, i'd be floored if they received the death penalty.
the ncaa needs the death penalty. kick ass johnny. spit in barkley's face.

The odds are virtual 0 if not 0 that either league has such churches set up. There is far too much risk. What briefly came to light with the Albert Means probation for Alabama was that (A) more than a few black HS coaches in several states and cities might be involved in 'selling' recruits (Means' coach was so guilty) and (B) black churches seemed to have become the preferred method of laundering the money, at least for black players.

Cam Newton's daddy is, of course, a minister
