Thomas suspended for 1 year

Yeah, NFL teams will be lining up to sign a 190-pound safety who when his team needed a leader to step up, decided to get baked.

He blew it. His shot and the NFL and his shot to get a degree. Fark him. I have no sympathy for anyone who doesn't take advantage of a free education.

NFL sidelines have been and still are covered with guys who screwed up in college with similar or worse issues. From Lawrence Phillips to Cecil Collins to Mario Manningham the list is endless. If you don't think he will get a shot at an NFL camp you are lost in space my friend, totally lost. And if that doesn't pan out there is the CFL and Arena league.

Manningham the most recent failed a drug test, lied to every team in face to face interviews, then scored a 6 on the wonderlic, wrote a letter to all 32 teams saying he lied to them to their face in interviews about his drug use and was sorry...and he still got drafted in Round 3!!! Talent Trumps All! These teams will justify this as its a kid being a kid making a kid's mistake if they think he can help their team. If it is just marijuana, it won't hurt Thomas as much as you think. Now Thomas isn't Manningham talent wise as in a top half of the draft player. But would someone roll the dice on Thomas in Roudn 6 or 7...maybe. Would a team sign him as an un-drafted free agent...the line will be from here to Timbuktu.

I know it makes you and others feel good to bash Thomas now and say nasty things about him and call him stupid. Hey he was stupid. He blew a great opportunity. But don't let it cloud logic. Thomas is a good (not great, but good) player and while this hurts his future it doesn't KILL it as you are saying it will and I am guessing hoping it will.

On what planet is Phil Thomas a professional prospect? He's a decent COLLEGE player, but that's as far as it goes. Kid is fearless and tough but ends up getting hurt constently. And for as many high quality plays he makes, he makes some bad one, and in key spots.

jesus christ I didn't say he would make it but he will get a shot. Be in a training camp That's all.

My god, lighten up people! I know everyone is upset and hates the kid right now but settle down and be realistic. If you don't think he will get a shot in an NFL training camp you are fooling yourself

So when it is released to the media will the suspension be "upper-body related" ... I kid ... I kid

I don't hate the kid. He made a bad choice and that was his choice to make. He let down his teammates, staff and fans and now he has created a chance for another kid who has been doing the right things to get a chance to start.

Addition by substraction... He played selfish... never wrapped always went for big hit... Took terrible angles... Got burned deep all the time... made some big plays but it was all or nothing... Better off with Wilkes or Fisher, IMHO...

I am in the same boat here.

Phillip will be the first to admit he made a mistake. He let down more than his teammates, staff and fans though. He let down his family and himself. I do not think that this is something (if it is indeed the drug offense as reported) that he did frequently. I am only speculating here, but Phillip just returned from home attending a funeral at the last bye. During that stay with the tragedy at hand, I would say that it was possible that drugs were around him at one point or another and one thing lead to another with everything that was going on. Again, I am just speculating that this is what might of happened. I know it doesn't make it right. And now he knows it as his dreams are suddenly in jeopardy, and I am sure if he could take back what ever moment it was back, he would in a heart beat.

This kid will bounce back.

And Eskridge next year.

So is he the "player" that others on the team were upset with for all of the partying or are there a few more? Maybe this will squash some of the issues?

You're joking, right? Kid's been our best safety in a while, leads the team in tackles, the BE in picks, and now that he gets suspended it's addition by subtraction.

This one hurts us a lot. I like Wilkes but the drop off is bigger than people think. I was a huge Flip fan, he had a brain fart once in a while but he would have been a force next year. Tough loss.

Agree with Bnoro. The kid played with a broken jaw and a handful of other injuries through the years. For better or worse he was a main part of the swag and aggresessiveness our defense has shown over the past few yeares. The kid gave up his body for the team and I bet his teamates respect that. Hell I do. He made a mistake(s) and will suffer the consequences for the rest of his life. I hope the best for him and hope he goes down the right career/life path.

It definitely hurts as we have no one to replace him. But he was just like our D overall. One play he would look great and the next play he would look bad. He was all over the place. His angles the last two years have turned decent gains into big plays. His break downs in coverage have allowed big plays. He certainly made up for it with big plays of his own. But he was a up and down player. He had a ton of talent but he wasn't even close to his potential. While we are worse off this year, we might be better next year without him.

Are you kidding? He was one of our best defensive players and Wilkes misses a ton of tackles.

A year for a little weed seems a bit exessive to me. Now if he was a full time pot head or it was something worse like coke maybe...

If he only smoked on Tuesday, somebody must've told the staff because it is ironic that he would've had a drug test that quick. Unless, of course, Tuesday wasn't the first time he had smoked or whatever.

Being in training camp = prospect.

He's not big enough to be an NFL safety and he's not fast enough to be a corner.

No it doesn't, you know how many teams invite endless un-drafted free agents to mini-camps and training camp. My god. These NFL teams turn over every rock and give everyone a shot.

I know you are bitter and angry right now at Thomas but you are letting it cloud any and all bit of logic. Take a deep breath and step away from the keyboard. You are coming off totally foolish.
