All SU paraphernalia was taken down in Casullo's office at STA during FHCDM reign here he just ignored that program. Under HCSS that office has been restored to it's former self.
If true, I imagine that had a bit do do with his father being hired and then fired by Marrone.

I don't remember Waynes name at all during the recruiting process and I thought we wanted Gordon and their was shared interest until some other schools came calling?

Marrone is a god - do not displease him with negatively tinged message board chatter.

Yeah, a college football coach has never missed out on a couple under the radar kids or above the radar kids for that matter. Geeze. How many coaches missed out on the linebacker from UB that went 4th or 5th in the draft. Dumb post

It happens all day everyday. Call me crazy, if someone fired my old man, I would send kids his way either. The Casullo's love Syracuse without a doubt but Bob should have never come back.

What do 2 guys from Kenosha have to do with Marrone?
and what does Casullo have to do with them?

We were after Gordon early on then his stock rose, he got other offers, and we seemd to be out of it. Not sure on the rest.

This thread could get fun. I'm going to grab a 2nd cup of coffee and some popcorn.

Before Melvin Gordon and Trae Waynes were starters at Bradford High School in Kenosha Wisconsin, Gary Acchione a former SU player identified them as special players.

Bradford is the 2nd largest school in Wisconsin and at any given time has 6 future D1 players on their squad.

Gary talked Syracuse up so much that the best friends wanted him to escort them to SU so they could check it out for themselves. Gary notified the staff that these kids were special. In fact he went so far as stating that Melvin was #44 worthy. Mel came from a two parent family that emphasized academics and staying away from trouble. Melvin was an honors student. Trae had track speed.

The trip was before the start of their junior seasons.

When they arrived at Syracuse Marrone wouldn't give them the time of day. At the time the philosophy was that SU wanted football alums to let them know of special players they had influence on. Both of these kids were recruited hard by Brent Belima but both wanted to get away from Wisconsin.

Melvin fell in love with the Ernie Davis Heisman and all of the other ED related things he saw. They had to drag him away.

When they got back home Gordon asked his head coach if they could watch the Express as a team building thing.

As the season started and the two players got game time as juniors they started to blow up. Still repeated calls to SU went ignored. I made contact with staff and was told we are all set at running back we have Tyree Smallwood.

By the end of the season Gordon had 13 major offers. Finally SU offered.....too late. Melvins coach felt SU had disrespected the players and their program. He told parents of the better players how we disrespected Gordon and Waynes who came to SU on their own dime.

Eventually, Melvin committed to Iowa. He went to the OSU-Iowa game where OSU won with a last second field goal. A fist fight broke out between players and coaches in the Iowa locker room. Shortly thereafter he de-committed. While his recruitment opened up we offered again. This time he decided to stick closer to home and chose Wisconsin.

Meanwhile, concerning Trae Waynes, after giving up on our staff Gary turned to an SU alum and former teammate Dave Warner who was at Michigan State. Might as well keep the kid in the family. Gary told Dave that he tried his best to get our alma mater to offer Trae with no luck.

Warner jumped on it because he respected Gary's opinion. The next week Waynes was invited to an MSU camp where he blew it up. An offer was made on the spot.

The moral to the story is if you ask football alums to keep an eye out for talent before everyone else knows about them treat them with respect. In this case you lost out on a potential #44 who is a Heisman candidate and 1st round projection for 2015 and you lost out on a top notch DB who is also a projected 1st round pick as a junior.

Makes sense Gary would turn to Michigan St next that's where his oldest son walked on.

I loved Marrone, but I have heard far too many of these recruiting stories where he seemingly went out of his way to turn kids, coaches, and alumni off. Makes me thankful for Shafer right now.

I never did understand why Marrone had the rep of not making football alumns feel welcome. Mystifying.

I think it's the NFL/Parcells/Bellichek/CEO method. It's often cold - and not right for the college game (ie. recruiting).

IB...do you even know why Casullo left? I know there is one version that's been posted on here, but I've heard a completely different version from Bob's side.

Absolutely a true story by Orange eyes I met Gary at the Clemson game as I had sideline passes. He had less than kind words to say about Marrone. He said that when he brought the two players to campus that Marrone wouldn't even come out of his office to meet them.

Very disappointing to hear. All I can do is shake my head. That's not how you people should be treated. I really think that HCDM hit his ceiling here at Syracuse, he was never going to be better than an 8-4 kind of coach.

Yes he never really liked recruiting but he hated the politics of college football even worse especially things like fundraising for facilities improvements. In the pros it's all about football without these distractions and he is most happy being back there.

He also found his share of under radar kids and/or developed them into pro players - like J Pugh, S Thomas & J Bromley. I still give him ultimate credit for bringing SU football back from the dead - but I have moved on as the page has turned 2 (maybe 3) ways - S Shafer is now HC, we are in ACC and IPF will be built (no idea anymore).

Bob was fired
It's common knowledge that he was fired. I was asking if you knew why.

It's assumed by many that the Casullo's firing resulted from the way he treated players which isn't the entire story.

I've also gotten a different story, player treatment may have factored into the decision when it happened that day, but it was not the straw that broke the camels back.
